Not happy so far...

OK. So against my better judgement I decided to download the new Sonar.

First impression was OK. Looks similar. My MIDI keyboard had  not appeared and some plugins were missing. But what really annoyed me was the fact that when I closed it down and tried to open an existing Cakewalk file it opened in Sonar.

I want the programs to open independently of each other. I don`t want Sonar barging in and grabbing all my existing Cakewalk files.

If I decide to record with Sonar I will do so and save the file. If I want to work in Cakewalk I don`t want Sonar opening.

I also couldn`t find the mixing console when I had a very quick look. It use to be under `view`

Please point me in the direction for solutions to these niggles.  Many thanks.

You can only have one app associated with each file extension. In fact, if you during the Sonar installation select Advanced, instead of Basic, you do get a question which file extensions you’d like to associate with Sonar. It looks like the dialog below. Just unselect those you don't want to associate with Sonar.

However, as you most likely already have changed all of them to Sonar, by using the Basic installation, you can change the app associations back to CbB in either Windows > Settings > Standard apps, or do it in File Explorer by right-clicking a cwp file, select Open With and then locate Cakewalk by BandLab. Be sure to tick "Always use this application".  That might in fact be the easiest solution.

I always start by opening the application, and select which project file I'd like to work with from there. That gives total flexibility.

Why not simply open up Cakewalk first and loading your desired project from there?

Thanks. No, I haven`t read that Cakewalk will be discontinued. I hope not. I thought it is just updates will cease.

I opened the .cwp file straight from a folder and it opened in Sonar. I see above how to stop that. What file format does Sonar use to distinguish between the two programs?

It doesn't.

Either version will open .cwp files.

Otherwise backwards compatibility would not be possible

The solution is, as mentioned, is to NOT open a project directly from a folder in Windows and launch whichever version of Cake/Sonar first and open it from there.

As stated, only one app can be assigned to open a specific file type.  When right-clicking, you can also select Choose another app and check the box Always use this app which will permanently reassign it.

Cakewalk/Sonar normally maintains the same file type between versions.  Other DAWs like Mixcraft change the extension with each new version (.mx8, .mx9, .mx10, etc.) so the version it was last saved in opens the file when double-clicking it.

Clarification: only one app can be assigned to open files with a given extension when the filename or icon is double-clicked in Explorer.

NuSonar and CbB can both open .CWP files once you start the program and open projects via the Start Screen or File/Open.

.mc9 etc is this

You mean this :

By "assigned" I meant within Windows settings.  The assignment correlates directly with double-clicking. :)

Hi, Bristol.  So backwards compatibility is possible?  To what extent?  I would expect a placeholder for Sonar-only plugins when opening in old Cakewalk a project saved in new Sonar.

I mean, obviously certain plugins might not work, and features available in a newer version would not be accessible in an older one, but the 2 .cwp' -s by their very nature - would be compatible with each other.

SONAR/CbB/Sonar have always been both forward and backwards compatible.

If you try to open a newer project in an older version of Sonar/CbB, it'll just ignore the new stuff.

Some newer features aren't compatible in older versions, such as the new Audio Snap transient detection algorithms introduced in CbB (if you try to open in SONAR Platinum).  In cases like this, the transients will be thrown away and you'll need to re-detect them using the older algorithm.  You'll get a warning dialog when opening the project if this is the case.
