equality
Feels like I have changed this one a hundred times. Some day I'll get there. 😅 After a while the themes seem nagging. Any suggestion is wellcome.
FreeEarCandy
I think if this were mine I would slow the pace down a bit. Make the instruments talk more emotionally and not follow the grid. Sort of like you did at the end. Rather than a march go for a somber mood. The piano hook is good. Vocals would certainly help guide the pace and perhaps offer an opportunity to give pause at the end of a verse and let it breath. The horns can then take the lead between vocals and take the tune to a higher level of emotion and then softly land the tune at the end of the runway. Sonically the tune sounds good. Everything is clear and spaced. Rome wasn't built in a day!
bjornpdx
Catchy melodic bits and the different instruments play well off each other. Really good drum track. The tempo seems a tad too fast IMO. -Bjorn
KSband
Nice piano playing. I would turn up the bass, it sounds thin.
equality
BPM 90 --> 87. Bass up 4 dB. Sorry for a rushed and lousy reply. I'll be back for a better one.
KSband
Still doesn't really sound like a bass to me, the mix content all sounds midrangey to me. That locked interaction between bass and kick drum is where you get the punch. Is that a synth bass part? I would suggest importing a reference track and comparing back and forth.

Thanks again!

Thanks Bjorn for listening and comments.

I had never tried using a reference track but the idea is tempting. I think the problem with the bass is that it's intertwined with the left hand of the piano. I don't want to cut out the lower part of the piano since it feels natural to keep them as it is and I think add some drive at the beginnings of some bars. The bass is Trilian Fender (vst) best heard in the intro. I'll see what I can do. Perhaps yet leave the piano bass part totally to Trilian..? hsmusic
I enjoyed the overall vibe of the track; melodies / chords are very nice. As suggested I would try using reference tracks to get your ears 'acclimated'. This might help get your mix as you've said sounding less 'digital' & balanced..start with the bass & drums. I'm listening on my laptop with a pair of avg. cans (Sony MDR-7506) To my ears the sax sounds stereo & too wide (I hear some notes getting panned far right).. the drums narrow in comparison ( not necessarily a bad thing) . The piano & ac gtr. both stereo which is fine but gives my ears that kind of out of phase/ blurry sound ( I have hearing issues though!) You might try using a balancing plugin (eg. pan one a touch Left, the other right) or a combination to get more definition between the 2. As far as 'changing it 100 times' sometimes you just need to get away from a project for a while. When you get back things might just fall into place easily.

I do appreciate your thoughts on the different parts on the mix, the different instruments and how to do deal with those issues. I think you are right, I need to drop this one for a while to get some healthy distance and come back with fresh(er) ears.
Bajan Blue
Hi Late in on this and think I am listening to a "slower" version Liked the Piano Hooks and overall enjoyed the track. I really think KS is right about the Bass - it does sound wrong. I can really hear that at around 2.40. I assume this is midi bass (Trillian fender) then if this were me, I would be looking for a better sounding Bass Library. Do you have any others?? Apart from that, enjoyed this Nigel
