UAD 1176 freebie

I've stopped installing anything UAD since you have no control over their app.  Sure you could delete it and still install their stuff.  Their connect app has no options and starts up with Windows.  BTW it is a complaint among users.   I prefer not to deal with them. There's no shortage of 1176 emulations.

I do agree with boycotting companies that don't listen to customers, so I agree there and that's the best way to get them to change. This type of software doesn't need to be running all the time.

I have the UA Signature bundle, so I do have them installed in this case though.

Instead of uninstalling Connect, I just rename the exe to "disConnect". That way nothing autostarts as the system doesn't find the file it's looking for and I can still easily run it if I want to.

It's now become something to consider when deciding whether to buy (or keep in the case of freebies) software: how much crap does the installer shovel vs. the thing I actually want to use?

I don't mind installing installation managers, but I won't allow services that aren't needed by the plug-in.

The whole point of free stuff seems to buy into an eco system.  Many of them often require iLok.   I bought my first iLok when Line 6 offered Amp Farm free.

I don't install the free Waves anymore.

Even with Freebies, one has to decide if you really need it.

In my case, my final decision to pass on the UAD 1176 freebie hinged on the fact that I have IK Multimedia’s Black 76 (part of Tracks 5) and Arturia’s Comp FET-76 (Both emulations of the The 1176 compressor).

I like the IKM one, but for a lot of people that don't own the whole suite (I own most of it), the fact it requires you to download an insanely large install just to run what you do have might be enough to make someone take the UAD freebie and deal with ilok.

Oh that T RackS installer. If you don't have T Racks MAX you are blessed with demo (unregistered) versions of every plug-in you don't already own.

If you delete them, the next time you get a T RackS license you'll have to run the installer all over again, at which time they'll all be back. So instead of deleting the demo versions, I created a T RackS bullpen folder and move them to it. If I get a license for one of them, I copy it back to the VST3 folder and register it.

All good ideas/process but still requires that beast of an installer (and the repeat of that installer every time they update).

I've got most of them but just seems like a massive disc space waste as I honestly only use a few of them.

They fulfill my desire to have emulations of classic hardware on hand. Their UI's are so pretty.

Also, not mentioned often but important to me is that most of them can switch into M/S mode.

It was actually their Fairchild 670 emulation that first lit my mid-side lightbulb. One of the presets is for master widening, and it sounds amazing, so I puzzled out how mid-side compression could enhance width. Since then, I've become very fond of mid-side processing in general.

Installed it.  Played with it a bit.  Forgot about it till now.  Just put it in a project and Windows flagged it limiting some of it's functions.  Don't know if I did something wrong but It now loads with a blurry GUI.

Saw that.  Uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin.  Works now.  Probably a registry glitch caused by me.

BTW, the blurry GUI is a separate image that displays during startup for a brief moment. If something goes wrong during startup, it stays.

If you check in the iLok Manager - looks like most of their plugins (unless there's been a recent update that changes this) will only authorize to  iLok USB (2,3), or iLok Cloud.
image.png.a58f879e6e8cdac18b088ca716258b4e.png
Note that, as shown, authorizing with iLok1 or directly on your computer is disabled.

Trying to get and use the 1176  caused all my other UAD to have the Blurry Image Authorization issue, too.  In 4 or 5 years of using iLok, UAD's new authorization scheme is the only one I have had these kinds of issues with. One-by-one I did all of the steps in the video Promidi linked, pausing and double-checking after each step until I couldn't go any further.

The next step is to try to find the uninstall/reinstall video mentioned, but honestly my other iLoked products work and I am leaning towards just getting rid of them all and chalking it up to a learning experience.  It is unlikely that I will ever get the time spent back, so why waste even more time.

If anyone has other UAD plugins that still work, you might want to consider not downloading/updating them and/or getting the 1176.

UPDATE: Since the first steps in the uninstall/reinstall video were not useful, I decided to use Revo Uninstaller (which I should have used first!).  Next, I looked for any additional UAD Folders and renamed them (just in case I wanted to report what I had there to UA Support). Then I redownloaded and reran the latest UAD Connect software (for the third time).

After downloading the plug-ins (probably the four or fifth time today), I decided to give up by removing them using Cakewalk's VSTScan. But first I wanted to see what would happen if I tried to load the UAD test project.

To my surprise, I no longer got the Open UAD Connect pop-up. Then when I went to the FX Bin to open the plugs, they each opened to the blurry image and in about 1-2 seconds the image stabilized and one-by-one each plugin worked. (I didn't have to rescan using VSTScan.)

Lesson Learned: If at first you don't succeed, give up, get rid of the software using a tool like Revo Uninstaller, try starting over, and then maybe whatever got screwed up will have fixed itself.

If you already own it, UAD gives you a 10% coupon in your cart.

What a weird way to treat your customers. The ones who got them for free can activate the plugins on their machines and use them offline, while the customers who paid for them, can only activate them using cloud activation and have to be always online. It happened to me with the past free offer for Pure Plate Reverb, and I’m never going to buy any other UAD plugin until I have the ones I’ve bought available for machine activation like all these freebies. I’ll always choose the machine activation instead of the 10% coupon.

Installed and deleted UA Connect.   Yesterday it reared it's ugly head during a plugin scan.  Arturia does the same thing but I like them.  I could justify UA Connect if I had an audio interface.

Imagine if NI did the same thing............

Sad that our paid software has the behavior of viruses.

Yeah, a plug-in rescan triggered it to download and reinstall UAD Connect after I had uninstalled it. And it proceeded without asking or waiting for my approval.

So, let's see....this plug-in makes it possible for them to install unwanted software, software that has the purpose of monitoring the user's system.

How is that not malware?

It's a good plug-in, but just how much crap is someone willing to put up with in order to use an 1176 clone?

If it stays blurry it's because the plugin can't find its resources.

Possibly something screwed up during the installation process or it can happen if you take the VST3 plugin (1) out of its folder (2) because it needs the contents of the Resources folder (3) to render the GUI.

Most developers don't use html GUIs on their plugins.  Nothing wrong with that approach (probably makes it easy to have cross platform versions) just not the most common.

This structure - Folder.vst3, contents, resources, etc.  is actually the lastest VST3 spec; which is why you see more & more devs adopting it, though many don't use the Resources folder for anything that matters.  Now days I just move the whole folder.vst3 to organize/cleanup things instead of bothering to extract the actual plugin.vst3 file.

You usually can move the whole Folder.vst3 (with its contents) to another location (i.e. subfolder) within the C:\Program Files\Common\VST3 to organize thing if you wish. I don't bother with the UAD plugins because the installer just reinstalls them back to the root of that folder everytime it runs.

Install/Update WebView2

I've had a DAW reject that  WebView2.dll

UAD adds a lot of stuff to use their plugins.  Great stuff but I think my life would go on if my systems is free of UAD. So I'm not a fanboy

per Google:
WebView2 is pre-installed on Windows 11 and is also included on most Windows 10 devices, meaning it is essentially included with both operating systems; however, for Windows 10, it may need to be manually installed on some older versions depending on the update level.

Key points about WebView2:

  • Pre-installed on Windows 11: This means it comes automatically with every new Windows 11 installation.
  • Widely available on Windows 10: Most Windows 10 devices should have WebView2 installed, but older versions might require a manual update.
  • Evergreen Runtime: WebView2 uses an "Evergreen Runtime" which automatically updates in the background on both Windows 10 and 11.

So if you have Windows 11 and don't have WebView2 installed (assuming that you didn't manually delete it) you might have other issues as well.
If it was me and I ran into that issue on any of my Windows machines I'd do a little system maintenance i.e.
Open an elevated command window and run
SFC /SCANNOW
then
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

These are basic IT tech tools, if you don't know what these do - Google them*.
(not being rude or snarky just don't have the time at the moment to explain them when it's so easy to look it up)
