about a TH3

石川賢次

Question

Please tell me. I used to use sonar X3producer, and now I use cakewalk bandlab and cubase pro14. I used TH2, which was made by Overloud and came with a guitar amp simulator. It was very easy to use, and has evolved further into TH3 in bandlab, and although it is a limited-function version, it is sufficient. I would like to use THU with Cubase now, but when I purchase it from Overloud, I am thinking of buying TH-U Essentials instead of the full version for now, but I would like to know how it compares to the edition versions TH2 and 3 of sonar and cakewalk bandlab and the THU Essentials released by Overloud. In other words, it would be fine if it was the same as the limited edition version of sonar and cakewalk bandlab, but I might hesitate if it had fewer functions. Simply put, I would like to know the difference between TH2 and 3 that come with sonar and cakewalk bandlab and the THU Essentials version that you can buy purely from Overloud. Thank you in advance.

I have Cubase 14 and yes TH3 shows on the plug in list but when I opened  GUI it wants to be registered. When I entered the serial number it tells me that is only for Cakewalk and cannot be used.

Thanks for pointing this out. I would have found out eventually. But I see they still have stuff on sale so now is a good time to fix this. I have TH3 on almost all my Guitar tracks. I need it.  I now use 3 other Daw's.

It seems Essensuals version is free with any Rig Library. Looks like those are mostly $29 Eur or for me about $43 Can.

I guess I'll find out what is included but myself I've only ever used the Fender Bassman the Cabinet with one 12" speaker and then the Compressor, Chorus and phasor. Looks like the Fender Bassman is only $19 Eur.

OK done- cost $29 Can for the American Classics Library which has a list of about everything I could ever dream of having in my studio plus about 40 more! Now to see what effects are included with Essentials.

I would recommend reaching out to Overloud directly and explain your situation and your questions (basically the same thing you posted in the OP). Reason is that they could immediately answer your questions, give you comparison charts, and suggest options for you. Overloud was one of the companies that bent over backwards to support Platinum users when Gibson made us all orphans... they went so far as to unlock their bundled FX. They have exceptional customer support.

I bought a TH-U upgrade a few years back that was "too good to be true" and of course it wasn't. I messaged them and said I thought I was buying a TH-U upgrade from TH3, and they responded with, "Here, use this number." Reach out to them first.

The limited version TH3 is sufficient for me too. I own a couple nice tube amps but I rarely use them anymore. The TH3 sounds great.

However, a little trick I use a lot is spliting the guitar signal with a Y pedal. One side goes to the interface for the TH3 and the other side goes to a small guitar amp with distortion set high. I place the amp close to the guitar and it acts as a string exciter for sustain &/or feedback. It makes it sound & feel just like a real mic'd amp. You could mic up the amp too if u wanted but I never do. It's simply there as string exciter. The only thing recording is the TH3.

I'm sure many of u already know this trick but I thought Id mention it for anyone who didn't. It def helps make up for the one weak spot of recording in the box, which is lack of natural amp response.

For clean parts and rhythms I usually dont bother with it but for most solos I use this little amp setup. Cheers!

FYI  all the information about what you get with Essential is clearly shown on the website,

It is very similar to the Cakewalk version. But less offered. It’s missing the compressor pedal which is an important piece for me as I use it on acoustic guitar tracks.

Right now is 50% off all libraries. And then you get Essentials which you can use in any Daw. So under $30 you’re covered. Im going to see about buying the compressor.

Thank you everyone.

I will take your valuable comments into consideration.

Yes, I think you would get more details by asking Overloud customer center, and from the comments you've made, it does seem that it has fewer functions than the edition included in cakewalk.

It's true that Overloud is currently on a sale for less than half price, so I might as well just go for the premium full version of THU.

However, the file size will be heavier, and if Essential is more carefully selected and lighter in size, it does have its merits,

so it's a tough decision.

I would appreciate it if you could provide any other valuable opinions.

Are you saying lighter in size as for the download or as in the plug in using your CPU.

To me the Essential Edition is only missing the Compressor. I actually think it has a few things Cakewalk version doesn’t have.
You would pick the Library that has the Amps and effects you actually need and use. I have always used Fender amps so my choice was easy.
The full version has way more amps and effects than I would use. So it’s up to you as to what kind of sound you are after and read the info about the different libraries. Or buy a couple of them.
I haven’t had a chance but I need to find the one that includes the compressor pedal. If it still exists.
