I've seen them before along with several other variations of the story, including one where PS had a big time sulk about extending it, which from the "it's my baby" perspective I can understand, we all have our visions of how it's supposed to go, but also sometimes that can get in the way of a bigger picture and I guess time proves that he was wrong on that occasion. It would still have been good his way, but not as good. Every time I watch PS speaking I always wish he was more likeable. I can shrug off Eddie Van Halen's legendary jerkdom because his music doesn't require letting it in close to my heart. It's just kick-***** rock 'n' roll, and as such, who cares if the people making it made life miserable for those around them. Part of Simon's genius is that his music invites you to get close, to empathize with the singer(s). With music like that, if I know that the people creating it are jerks, it interferes. I think it'd still be great without the 3rd verse. My bigger problem, and I hate saying this cause it's my favorite song, is I feel the 3rd verse lyrics could be better. "Sail on silver girl"... that never really floated my boat 😉. Not to mention, he turned from a bridge into a sailboat. It never quite worked for me. "Im sailing right behind, like a bridge.." He shoulda just stuck with bridge similes. But Paul admitted he liked to write slowly and they were obviouly already in studio, short on time. So I cut him some slack. But I really wish the 3rd verse was the strongest verse to really knock it out the park(like the climaxing music is begging for). Yeah, for me, those lyrics could be better. Still not a big fan of the silver girl line but Im glad to know it had personal meaning to Paul. That gives it some depth. And interesting that Art sang the third verse first.
