I whistled while I worked.
Had to do some carpentry this week. These rotten, old steps and the stoop had reached the danger level and had to be replaced. To save money, it's a hybrid of old and new. The actual platform is still strong although it is weathered and ugly.
I replaced the floor of the stoop last week and cut the steps as well but ran out of time to finish it that day. Brother Carl and his wife Brenda told me that i can get the stringers pre-made at Lowe's or Home Depot, unfortunately, they're not tall enough. They're only 27" and I needed 30", so I used the old ones as templates for the new ones.
Cutting the first stringer went fine, but while making the second one, I accidentally let all of the smoke out of my friend Willard's circular saw. That thing had to be 30 or 40 years old. Off to Walmart* I went to get another saw. Thirty-five bucks. Not bad.
It cut like a dream and in my excitement, I lost track of what I was supposed to be cutting and went too far, rendering that piece of wood useless. Back to Home Depot for another 2x10x8.
I was more careful the second time and all that was left was putting it all together.
Certainly not up to carpenter Ronnie Bible standards, but it's strong. I expect it to outlive me, despite there not being a straight line or anything plumb and level on the whole thing. The feet of the stairs are kinda pigeon-toed, too.
