Partially correct. It is not an ID check as in they want your name and address. It is a verification check that the person who created an account is the one trying to sign in from a different device, or change the password, etc. etc..

You have the option to send a verification code to any email account you choose, say for example the one you used to sign up with initially, or a different one, or have it texted to your cell. My bank has a 3rd option to call your cell using an automated system.

I can see people not wanting it texted. I can understand people not wanting to be forced to use 2fa. But it's not putting your privacy at risk at all. Make a specific email account for 2fa and use that. I did. Been using 3 accounts for years solely for verification and software registration.

That said, I've never been forced to verify an account except for Google and Facebook. I'm surprised Soundcloud does, but it doesn't bother me in the least. Personally I think it's a great idea, but to each his own.

So its checking who you are (moot point) therefore a digital ID check. 😇😇

semantics.

Sure, I get what you are saying.

In my mind there is a difference between someone verifying the info you already gave them and someone new trying to get your info. But yeah you're right, they're both forms of an ID check.

They can't get anymore info than you've already given them using 2fa, other than the same user using their software or services on more than one device. Then yep, they will have that new devices info. I can't see a downside to it though.

Hi guys ,

I have been reading each and every post here . I feel most of your view points and comments are valid and have merit .🙂

Rather than jump in and try to comment on everything said I am choosing to describe an experience I had yesterday afternoon just trying to sign in to my e mail .

I have 2 e mail acct s with the same provider and I was shocked that my first sign in went smooth with out a hitch ...I said to myself maybe the tech support call had an effect and  they lightened the sign in  restrictions for me when I sign in .

I go to sign in on my other e mail with the same provider and I get hit with a group of multiple choices for my identity verification.  OK yeah great here we go again .....

I had my cell phone right there so I choose to have then send me a text w a code ...I have the page up where I am so-posed to enter the code up as I check my cell for the text they are sending me ....

NO LUCK No TEXT and I time out .....I repeat the process 2 more effing times and no text with a code 🤬

I have just wasted a grand total of about 4 mins getting  jerked  around playing along with their little game and if I could Pull a Lawnmower Man and jump through the wires and go after them I would

So I hit the show more options and choose a to receive a cell phone call  . Next some artificial sounding robot voice calls me and informs me of  my one and only sign in code for this session. I finally get into my e mail and then I put the brakes on to stop every thing so I can  take stock of what just happened  .....

I say to myself WTF is this ?????? After 3 failed attempts ? I have to become a citizen of your Dystopian New World Order just to sign in to my e mail of 20 years just prove to you that I am not a robot  and then you put a Robot on the line to call me on my cell phone ......

Shouldn't I be able to check your Robot's credentials ?

I check my phone to make sure all my settings were properly tuned on just to see if on my end my settings contributed to not receiving the texts ...All was fine on that end ....BTW 2 hours later the 3 texts showed up ....

All this hassle got me going and apparently I must have worked up an appetite because I wanted to go out and get some food at the supermarket ...I rifle around in my wallet searching for my store card so I can save a whopping 20 cents per item on my groceries .....

I'm just doing my part as a "well trained docile citizen "  I feel it is very important for me to always share my preferences and purchasing choices with all  who come to conquer and subjugate me 😜

I started my own LLC and took over maintenance and property management at an apartment complex. It consumes my life, that's why I'm not around here much anymore.

Anyway, the pm I replaced refused to give access to the official email address or give the official phone number back which is actually a cell phone. After 2 months she finally became more cooperative with some firm persuasion and I got the cell back and the password to the email account.

But trying to get the email account back was a nightmare. I had an IT guy helping me change the password and even after we changed where the 2fa codes went to, they still kept going to the original cell number, which fortunately I was able to get and reactivate after a few months.

I've tried multiple times to change where the 2fa codes go to since I've gotten full access back to the email account, but nothing works. It won't change. It let me change the 2fa alternate email address it goes to, and I can select it, but it still goes to the cell no matter what and never goes to the alternate email. If I wouldn't have gotten the cell phone back I would never have been able to get access to the email account.

A guy I know has facial recognition set up to unlock his cell. He was driving one night a few weeks ago and got a call and tried to unlock his phone. He dropped it, reached down to get it, drifted off the road, hit a pole and snapped it clean off.

This is a point I was going to make previously, about 2fa being a slippery slope, and what would you say if some website said they wanted you to identify yourself by facial recognition?

what it all is, is a slippery slope where you'll be constantly harrassed to identify yourself and prove who you are, obviously we are now just talking about people logging in from unrecognised devices, but eventually passwords will turn to facial recognition, everything will need "passwords" you can't enter buildings in China in most places without having your face scanned and being identified, these would be any building, not any special building.  The whole thing is a long slow slippery slope.

The mobile phone in the not too distant future will be used as an ID in itself, like in some places it's mandatory to carry an ID card, your mobile phone will have everything about you on it, your banking records, your health records, driving license, ID card, ect, it will more than likely be mandatory to carry a mobile phone, which is very easy as most people carry one already.  Worth keeping in mind, imo.

don't be too eager to go along with everything these websites ask you to do.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ha, signed in to Cakewalk Discuss this morning and just got my first 2FA for this site.  Very Interesting.  Haven't changed any setting so not sure if this is an option I can change, but I'll check on that later.  Right now I'm going to try and poach a couple of eggs (pun intended.)

After swearing to all that's Holy I would never subscribe to anything, ever, I had to subscribe to MS 365 recently. It came with 1T cloud storage. The mininal cost was worth that alone. And it's a write-off. So that's how I justified it.

I had to use MS's 2fa app.. I did have a lot of trouble getting it set up and accepting my logins, but it had nothing to do with the 2fa. It had to do with the fact that when I signed up for it through MS, for some reason they couldn't find my Windows account/email and I had to create a new one. So I now have 2 official MS accounts on the same PC which is making life very difficult.

But the 2fa part was quick and easy.

I kind of laughed when I read your post ..So I go to sign in log  here at the forum to reply to your post and they got me too 🤪 I signed into to the wrong e mail by accident so  once I realized that I had to scramble to beat the verification count down .

I am so not in the mood to play this game  .....

NOPE NO KEN DO

So I log out from this forum ,

Now when I decide to sign back in here at the forum  15 mins later they  want me to go and grab another set of 2FA codes ...

OK,  So I go to log into my e mail on file here to retrieve my code and the e mail provider  wants  me to go through the little 2FA dance they have been running on me where I have to receive a text on my phone .

What T F....

Now I have to have my phone and my e mail combined available at all times when I want to chill out and participate in a little online social media .....

Yeah Right !

I can tell you how this is gonna end because there is nothing social about social media anymore and for the record I am not one of Pavlov's Rat s he performed his ground breaking laboratory conditioning experiments on

Zoinks ... whatever ya do ... don't check your MS security area. This is just the first page. It goes on and on ... Here's the thing, I don't have 2FA set up for this account because I don't really care about it. I wonder if my cell would be exploding with confirmation texts if I did?
