Cobalt VST is another good synth for beginners and Kawai K3 vst is another beginner plug in.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but:

Here are some great-sounding synths that nobody has mentioned yet:

TAL - NoiseMaker: https://tal-software.com/products/tal-noisemaker (Powerful, easy to use synth.)

TAL - Elek7ro: https://tal-software.com/products/tal-elek7ro (Similar to NoiseMaker, but slightly less powerful and slightly easier to use.)

Brain Control - Tunefish 3: https://www.tunefish-synth.com/download (I prefer Tunefish 3 to Tunefish 4, as it has an additional oscillator compared to version 4.)

All of these work well with CwB, except that Tunefish 3 sometimes glitches when you change parameters while audio is playing.  This can be easily fixed by simply not modifying parameters while audio is playing.

I have tried TAL - NoiseMaker and TAL - Elek7ro. Good sounds.

Maybe it's just me but i found TAL - Elek7ro to be a bit unstable. If i remember correctly i got hung notes sometimes.

I still use/have installed TAL - NoiseMaker.

I just popped in to one of my favorite makers of virtual instruments, Applied Acoustics, to update my email preferences. Rumor has it that around this time of year they send out a free voucher for your choice of soundsets if you are signed up.

They have a free VSTi called Swatches that offers a sampling of each of their many sound packs. Swatches is periodically updated to add more sounds as more sound packs are created, so I check in from time to time. There was a new version, now they are up to over 420 sounds in the thing!

And they are really good sounds, obviously they choose some of the best ones to show off each soundset.

A|A|S stuff, especially products that use only the player, like Swatches, is usually pretty resource-friendly.

Yup - there are literally hundreds of free Kontakt libraries and effects and synths available.  I think I ended up with close to 4 hundred such items.  I only deal with those that are 64-bit, except for a small number of 32-bit synths that work in 64-bit VST programs, such as CbB and Cantabile, and other DAW suites I have.

Someday, I will dig up all the links I saved off, for the freebies I have downloaded, and will post them in some kind of way here - I want to give thought on how to best do that, and I have a pretty full couple of weeks ahead of me.  But, I will circle back to do that, and also want to thank all the folks who have posted about freebies and good deals, quite kind to invest time like that, to help the rest of us.  GREATLY appreciated. :)

And if you don't have Kontakt, an alternative to free Kontakt libraries is to  use the free sfz format Virtual Playing Orchestra library for the Plogue sforzando player (the player is from the creators of the Aria player used by Garritan):

http://virtualplaying.com/virtual-playing-orchestra/

"This is a full, free orchestral sample library featuring section and solo instruments for woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion."

"Virtual Playing Orchestra is a free orchestral sample library, in sfz format, that attempts to emulate multiple articulations of the solo and section instruments from a full orchestra using the best free samples from Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, No Budget Orchestra, VSCO2 Community Edition, University of Iowa, Philharmonia Orchestra and extra free samples from Mattias Westlund, author of Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra."

https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html

The main drawback to sforzando is that it's not multi-timbral, so you may need to insert  multiple instances of the plugin to achieve what you need.

The new Orchestral Tools  Sine player is behaving well as a Vst in Cakewalk for me.  The free Layers library contains full ensembles of orch, brass, strings and woodwinds.

I am impressed by the quality and flexibility of the free and unlimited orch library.  The learning curve to master the nuances offered within the player looks steep, but the end result is going to be worth it.

Crystal is pretty old but still a classic.     https://www.greenoak.com/crystal/dnld2.html

Thanks for reminding me of this. I can't remember when I last used it--probably in an XPSP3 environment, though evidently I did install it [v2.4 (c) 2003] on my Win 10 PC. Factory Sounds seem to have artifacts with my current settings, esp. when notes are held (independent of patches). I remember having fun with it, esp. with the colorful multi-point envelopes.  I will try the "new" version and try to tweak my settingsOf course, if the artifacts remain, it might lend authenticity with the seemingly random glitchiness--maybe with mondo fx like z3ta+ fx.  Its now on my list to play with some more one of these days!

EDIT: I upped the sound card's ASIO latency a hair and the artifacts now seem to be gone.  Still planning to route through z3ta+ fx, though for some authentic electronicky experimentalism!!!

EDIT: Yup--works well for my kind of experimental music with z3ta+ mondo delay fx looper. Also, w/o the fx, it barely affects CPU on my system giving me tons of headroom for on-the-fly fx changes!  Thanks  for mentioning this oldie-but-goodie!!

(2) to add info about usage with mondo fx; (1) to update issue re: artifacts
