bitflipper
Have you ever actually uttered the term "hemi demi semi quaver" when communicating with other musicians?
Zargg
Not yet. Isn't that a 32nd note, or is it 16th? I heard a 1024 note being described as you did, and it was looong
paulo
The only quavers I know anything about are these....
craigb
I like how Dave still holds out hope of finding educated people in this day and age. 1
AndyB01
I was educated in Blighty, by two wonderful music teachers: Eric Cliff and Bob Wysome - I never heard either utter such a term. ? Bob was a musical genius and his gift as a teacher was beyond compare. How he got an entire year of spotty, hormonal, cynical teenagers to form a choir, turn up to practise, sound good and perform successfully at a school concert still astounds me. I can hear him yelling at us now: "There is no 'R' in 'Hosanna in'" ?? Andy ????

Once or twice, although only when discussing sheet music. Demisemiquavers are far more common.

Crotchet = 1/4th note Quaver = 1/8th note Semi-Quaver = 1/16th note Demi-Semi-Quaver = 1/32nd note Hemi-Demi-Semi-Quaver = 1/64th note. I could go on... but it gets silly!
Xoo
Yes. But the US system is *way* more sensible and easy to explain to people.
bitflipper
I understand there's also a "breve", and it's not a beverage. I wonder if my barista would interpret "semibreve" as an 8-ounce breve. I've always thought it strange that we've had to learn Italian in order to buy a coffee. Who gave Italy that authority? Coffee should be ordered in Ethiopian, should it not?

I don't think I've ever seen a breve in any sheet music... maybe it's reserved for orchestral triangle players!
Xoo
It's so players can take a breve-r. I'll get my coat.

ant_in_wales
I've spent my life grumbling about how terrible the Imperial system is ("How many yards in a mile?") and my music-studying teenager is very much the same about crotchets and quavers and that.
