actually one of the few that has translated OK in the car. Not a lot of low mids, maybe that’s where the “issue” lies in the van?...

Glad it sounded good in your car. 

Quite possible it could be due to excessive low mids in tracks, but depends case to case. I generally pull things down a bit by a db or two, sometimes more, around the 450 to 500 Hz range to reduce muddiness, that really helps to clear out things.
