sjoens Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) Request to allow alt code symbols in Track View/Console View track names, like arrows: "▼" (alt+31) & "▲" (alt+30). They can be typed in but don't remain after saving & closing the project. Open the saved project and the symbol is replaced with "?" Edited September 5, 2020 by sjoens

I was hoping to use alt code symbols in track titles like arrows: "▼" (alt+31) & "▲" (alt+30). They can be typed in but don't remain after saving & closing the project. Open the saved project and there's a "?" where the symbol was. Am I doing something wrong or can we not use special characters? The problem isn't really within cakewalk but more windows itself. Windows does not allow certain special characters to be used in file names and once a track is stored within the project folder, files are listed by track names. I could be slightly wrong here, but i dont think i am.
sjoens Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 To see if I'm reading you right, I just renamed a file on my desktop with "▲" in the name. It took. Then I copied the file to another location and it copied it with the special character intact.
Jim Fogle Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 @chuckebaby, Windows 10 recently added a new feature. Press the Windows key + the period key and a pop-up window opens. The pop-up window includes a lot of special characters that Windows formally did not support. I just tried "∆.txt" and Windows accepted it. 1 1
InstrEd Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 ? Thanks Jim I didn't know about that shortcut. 1
Jim Fogle Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Unfortunately I haven't found any music staff or instrument characters yet. ☹️
sjoens Posted September 5, 2020 Author Posted September 5, 2020 (edited) Characters used in DOS level file management have always been forbidden for general file/folder naming, like \ / : ? " < > |. Alt code characters, like "▲" that can be used in file naming should also be usable within Cakewalk. At least I don't see a reason why they couldn't. Cakewalk track names are not files and all the forbidden symbols above can be used there. In my case, Cakewalk is replacing the symbol "▲" with a "?" (a forbidden character).
