Either instrument or MIDI track would work because both use MIDI data but there must be at least one or the other in the track view or the other views are disabled.

For years, Noel has recommended running the scanner from preferences NOT the plug-in manager. It might be a good idea to get in the habit of using preferences whenever possible and restricting use of the plug-in manager only when necessary such as exclude list and plug-in layout management. My experiences suggest always activating iLok plug-ins before their initial scan regardless of the manufacturer. Failing to do so can result in the plug-ins being banished to the exclude list.

While waiting for this change (or until the options become more familiar) consider using the tools module in the Control Bar. Right-clicking does not collapse the tools module.

Data exchange between BandLab and CbB is a work in progress. AFAIK, there is no simple feature matrix comparing the two DAWs. Both have overview pages. Here is the one for BandLab and here is the one for CbB. CbB includes a drum synth called SI-Drums. The plug-ins bundled with the CbB are detailed here. In addition to what is bundled with the DAW, CbB supports DX, VST2/3 plug-ins made by 3rd parties. There are hundreds of free and commercial plug-ins which run in CbB.

As mentioned above, the Chrome-based DAW called BandLab is a different product. Cakewalk by BandLab is a free standing program that only runs on Windows. It is available for download here. The documentation about this DAW is here. The installation instruction are here (follow the install using BandLab Assistant method).

Feature requests go in the Feedback Loop area of this forum To avoid overwriting clips select a different recording mode.
-
There is no concept of a blank MIDI clip. CbB creates MIDI clips based on the data in the track.
-
There are several MIDI editors: the event list view, the inline PRV in the track view (a.k.a arranger), the piano roll view, the step sequencer view and the staff view.
-
That would be my guess too based on and @Mark Shirra's other threads. While I am sure there are some here that use both programs and there is some overlap given they are both DAWs, the OP needs to know this forum was created for Cakewalk by BandLab. a Windows program, and not the Chrome-based DAW called BandLab.

VC64 is a 32bit plug-in last bundled with SONAR X2. To add old SONAR plug-ins run the SONAR installer, select the 64bit option then selected the advanced install option and select the plug-ins to install.

Best to disable the MS GS Wavetable synth in preferences. It appears there is no audio in the project. If this is the case you could Save the project as a MIDI file. Then open the MIDI file. If no MIDI output devices are selected in preferences, CbB will automatically add the TTS-1 softsynth plug-in and audio tracks need for the project. In the future use soft synths for MIDI as mentioned the previous post. BTW, there is no need to freeze tracks to export an mp3. The problem is the project has no audio to export. The audio is coming from an external device.

Drum maps used in a project are stored in the project. Drum map presets are loaded from the path in preferences.

Usually when the drop downs are not populated, the files did not get installed properly. This may be corrected by holding the SHIFT key when starting CbB. AFAIK, all the project templates have three buses set up: a master bus a metronome bus a preview bus May be easier to start new projects by using one of the bundled templates until you get comfortable using the DAW.

If this is related to the MIDI device, the other thread did not mention checking the MIDI driver mode This could be an issue if the OP uses Win10.

There are a couple of copies of Master.ins in a CbB/SONAR install but the version used by the program is in the same folder as Aud.ini, Cakewalk.ini and TTSSEQ.ini (often referred to as the user directory). There is a separate user directory for CbB and each version of SONAR in %appdata%\Cakewalk.

Note duration may be set using the the note duration buttons at the top of the PRV or the menu in the tools HUD or module. The last touched option overrides these methods of selecting note duration. There are predefined keyboard shortcuts for some note duration settings. For more info see http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Tools.20.html

The default behavior for double-click on audio clips changed in 2018-07 to open Clip Properties. At that time a setting was added to the Track View Options menu under Click Behavior > Double-Click > Audio Clips to modify this behavior. When looping audio if the length changes it means CbB needs help figuring out the number of beats. This may be fixed by altering the beats in the Loop Construction View or the Groove Clip section of the Clip Inspector.
-
Sometime Cakewalk gets beat detection wrong. Open the clip in the Loop Construction View and modify the beats or change it in the groove clip section of the clip inspector

This has available as a 64bit DX plug-in for some time. All DX plug-ins must run the same bitness as the host. In fact, 32bit DX plug-ins are not visible to 64bit hosts and 64bit DX plug-ins are not visible to 32bit hosts. For SONAR X3 and older run the installer, choose the 64bit option, advanced install and select the 64bit plug-ins to install. Newer versions that included this plug-in have it in the SONAR installers itself so, the 64bit DAW must be installed to get this and the other "half rack" plug-ins that came from Project 5.

If there is a chance a collection of tracks and plug-ins will get used in more that one project, I create a track template. Saves a lot of repeat typing and setup.
