    Road Trip

This is a drive-by mugging. But I mean that in a good way. Let me know what you think. It's rough, and raw, but I like it that way.
  2. Thanks for all the kind words, everyone!
  3. I manually doubled the guitar on the melody lines. Tele in one channel, Strat in the other. No stereo or expander effects. All the solos were the Strat.
  4. Drums are just the built in drum machine, plus some latin percussion instruments. I used TDR Koletnikov on those tracks, I think. Why do you ask?
  5. I wrote and recorded this little ditty a long time ago with my drummer buddy Tony Lehotsky. The recording was awful, but his drumming was inspired and the tune was good. This crossed my mind a week ago and I thought I'd try to recreate it. Sounds MUCH better! Feedback welcome.
  6. Skynrd?!? What the heck? LOL. I actually thought the lead guitar started to sound like early 70s Moody Blues there, but I think I see what you're saying. I do like LS's crunchy guitar sound. Thanks for the kind words. Where in Michigan are you from? (Plus your profile picture gives me a chuckle.)
  7. The intro is an in-joke. This is actually autobiographical; my first band in the early 70s was a seven piece rock band with horns, we were big fans of Chicago. Note also the lick from 'Smoke on the Water' in there. More bass, less kick. I think you're right.
  8. Good points, I'll look into it. Question: I mixed the voice with more treble than usual; on some of my systems, it sounds like the voice is too out front, sounds separate from the rest of the mix. Any thoughts on that?
  9. I just dropped BOTH shoes on this one. (EDIT: This is the final mix.)
  10. Everything fits together like an old pair of slippers on my feet, very nice mix! Great playing, great song.
  11. I like the bass too. However, it sounds to me like the voice is all alone in the center and everything else is off to the far left or far right. Perhaps something to fill it in a bit? Either add something or add some supplementary separation to the vocals? Very nice song, great playing!
  12. I have to echo others on the drums - could do with a little deeper sound, make it sound more authoritative. Not heavy or hard, just a richer tone. Might be nice to give it more motion and growth as the song progresses; maybe background vocals, or a slight boost to the percussion. Very smooth integration of everything else! Nice mix!
  13. Very ethereal; almost a Moody Blues mellotron feel in places. Very evocative.
  14. The bass seems to fill up the bottom, almost to the point of distortion; it kinds of crowds things. It also sounds like there's a hissing in the background, but not like tape hiss... hard to identify. I'd also see if you could move the plucked background guitar to the sides; it seems like it's competing with the lead vocal for attention. Nice how the second guitar comes in during the chorus, giving it some depth and motion. I like the song!
  15. I had posted here that I replaced ASIO4ALL with WASAPI, but it turns out WASAPI introduced a slight latency into the recording process. I literally had to nudge my clips a tiny bit to the left to make them correct. Back to ASIO4ALL and it's correct.

  17. Bloody genius! Very idiosyncratic., yet catchy. Lots of great textures, sounds, melodies. Nothing in the mix jumped out at me - it all melds beautifully.
  18. I NEED SPECIFICS, MAN. ? It does feel a bit crowded.. there are a LOT of tracks here. I feel I've made good progress in trimming and thinning so all the tracks can coexist. I also did a new thing -- after I mixed and mastered using headphones, I reviewed it again using my phone earbuds. Made some tweaks so it sounded better there.
  19. The original, for comparison.... https://soundcloud.com/barry-seymour/a-little-bit-first-recording-march-2020
  20. This was the first song I recorded in Cakewalk four months ago. Perhaps I was overly ambitious. Anyway, I just listened to it again two weeks ago and it was like finding a moldy loaf of bread in the cupboard. I've learned SO MUCH since then. So I decided to record it again! And here it is. New Stuff: Strings on the middle eight! Better integration of harmony vocals MUCH better drum track Better sound and compression on the bass Feedback welcome.
  21. Thanks for all the information. The pieces are slowly coming together in my fevered brain.
  22. Okay, I read this again and I think I have an even better take on things. Will research more.
  23. Sorry, I'm Mr. Analog Instrument, never knew much about MIDI. I am unsure of what you mean by 'check all the instrument and MIDI Track Input Assignments.' But I created a new empty project with an eye toward learning; Just Drums and Strings. Here's what I understand so far... I have to set input to each track to Mini OMNI for the virtual controller to work If I select a track, then the virtual controller records that track. If I shift+Click the track NUMBERS, both are selected and VC input is routed to both. Gotta make sure I avoid that. If I start recording, manually entering notes, the first few beats / notes are not captured / recorded. Any suggestions on that? I tried setting the MIDI input to separate channels for each of the instruments, but then the VC didn't work. I suspect that's by design. I don't think the VC has a 'MIDI channel,' per se. Am I barking up the right tree so far? Thanks for your help so far.... Barry
