  1. One of my favorite acoustic slide players: "Dallas" - Johnny Winter
  2. I think I'll call it "God's Waiting Room's Band" ?
  3. Last entry 96 Tears. We gigged locally with that band. A DJ in Flint MI bought half share in their band and broke the record which was 69 tears until they went into the recording studio and the DJ said it wouldn't get airplay. "The Tears Of A Clown" - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles A bassoon player got work on that session. I worked at Motown for a year or so, opened for a lot of their acts, and Berry used to hire Detroit Symphony Orchestra players for a lot of the sweetening parts.
  4. I'll be playing music and hopefully gigging until I can no longer fog a mirror ;)
  5. Motion in Non-Motion Here you find a series of slits roving across an illustration, thus allowing only small bits of information at a time. Our brain then fills in the gaps of different stages and recreates the experience of viewing fluid movement. If you're feeling dumb and disappointed in the power of the human brain, don't—as you can see, the cat in this video was also fooled.
  6. "All the cops in the donut shop say Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh Walk like an Egyptian" (We finally learned that song, it's fun. Wish we learned it years ago)
  7. Remember, you need a purpose in life. Working is good, but you need to work where you either enjoy the work, or feel you are needed. It's a recipe for a long life. I've gigged at retirement communities since I was 40. We play a lot of them over and over again, and we get to know the people. Those who get "retirement disease" are usually the first ones to die. They used to say "Don't let the rocking chair get you" now it's "Don't let the TV (or Hulu) get you". The long lived folks in Japan call it ikigai https://medium.com/thrive-global/ikigai-the-japanese-secret-to-a-long-and-happy-life-might-just-help-you-live-a-more-fulfilling-9871d01992b7 Ikigai (生き甲斐, pronounced [ikiɡai]) is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being." The word "ikigai" is usually used to indicate the source of value in one's life or the things that make one's life worthwhile. Congratulations on getting to Uncle Sam's list. No be careful who you vote for, one political party is trying to take that away - google "starve the beast" (with quotes). Remember, you paid all your life, don't let the super-rich steal that money from you. I got on at 63, could have done 62 but I procrastinated.
  8. Good stuff, some of Bizet's best ? In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
  9. Don't worry, the cops are on their way!!!
  10. It got interrupted before it was done yesterday, so I'm listening to it again today, hopefully until completion.
  11. Mmm, I'm having a cup I just made. Unkind (Dunkin) Donuts coffee with a tablespoon of cocoa powder, some stevia and heavy whipping cream. Caffè mocha mocha mocha mocha mocha mocha mocha mocha mmmmmmmmmm good.
  12. Starbucks has good coffee So does Dunkin' Donuts -- which if you move the first letter of Dunkin to the end it turns into "Unkind Donuts (I have no idea what that occurred to me). I little over a year ago I spent 5 weeks in Australia (in a camper van). In Oz they make coffee by first making expresso and then adding hot water and/or cream. It gives the coffee a slightly different but good flavor. But I had to learn new terms for ordering it - I preferred "Long Jack" which was the closest thing to American coffee, espresso with water and a bit of cream. ---- Back to Magazines. Electronic Musician was sold to a UK company who put me back on their free subscription list, even though I don't advertise in it anymore (Thank you). It's still not the EM of days gone. Much of the focus in all music magazines today seems to be for recording vs. live performance. When I record, I let the nice folks outside the fish bowl take care of all the technical things and I just play. But I don't record that much anymore, most of the studios around her went belly-up as home recording technology became affordable. I gig for a living, and the only recording I need is to plug a half dozen or more synth modules into a mixer, make a backing track for my duo, and record it straight from the output of the mixer. Playing music with my musician wife in front of an appreciative audience is the most fun I can have with my clothes on. It's a good way to make a living. Sorry for the tangent on the magazine thread.
  13. That happens from time to time. (BTW, we do "I Shot The Sheriff" somewhere between the Marley and Clapton versions and the audience at our weekly marina gig likes it) You see, I have a very good memory, it's just a little short OK I'll go elsewhere Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar
  14. "I Fought The Law (And The Law Won)" - Bobby Fuller Four
  15. I would suspect some singers want a mic for the fx. It's easier to hear yourself that way, especially for singers who don't have proper training. And as I said before, volume is a drug for musicians. Music just sounds better when it is loud. We often play at one particular yacht club. We start playing during their cocktail hour, then a dinner set and later a dance set. During the cocktail and dinner sets we play at 65dba at the PA speakers. We can hear people talking over our music. But that's OK with us. The function of the cocktail set is for people to converse. When I go out to eat I like to talk to the people at the table with me. Then when the dinner is done, we crank it up to about 85db on the dance floor, the people mob the floor and when the night is over they thank us for a wonderful evening and often comment about the volume being just right. A second yacht club we play is completely different. They put us in a tent in the parking lot and call it 'dancing in the street'. Since it's outdoors, we turn the volume up right from the start, but not loud enough to hurt their hearing. Every gig is different and it is up to the professionals (us since we are getting paid) to analyze the gig and play appropriate music at appropriate volumes. I would also appreciate a singer with no mic if accompanied by non-amplified acoustic guitars. I stress non-amplified even though I shouldn't, because around here I hear guitarists "going acoustic" by putting the electric down and picking up a flat top guitar with a pickup and plugging it into an amp (I'm sorry, that isn't acoustic but I know better than try to explain it to them). 16. The Arabian Nights, complete Ballet in two Acts - Fikret Amirov If you have the time check this out. He combines Azerbaijani folk music melodies and harmonies with Soviet Era symphonic composition style. If I were to have 10 desert island music CDs, this would definitely be in the collection. It's brilliant!
  17. Little Richard - The Formative Years 1951 - 1953 Some surprising good blues here before he was a rock n roll pioneer. Keep it playing for the full album if you like.
  18. When I'm done with a magazine, I pass it on for others to read. Music mags go to other musicians, general mags get left in doctors or dentist offices, or whatever. None go into the bin. Notes
  19. The L.E.D. Zeppelin is just too funny. Thanks for sharing that!
  20. I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair - Stephen Foster I'm not going to post a video because I don't care for the song and don't want to search one out ;) - besides posting a video is not required in this game, just a luxury.
