They're NOT crippleware (V3 legacy plugins). They're fully functional and free. The newer V4 plugins have fully functional demos, except for preset saving, but they do remember their state if you save the project.

I’m using Groove Agent 5 SE for drums. It’s incredibly powerful and low on CPU. It has every FX and routing option you can imagine. You can get it with any version of Cubase including the LE you can get for $10 online. Just make sure to download it from the VSTi tab of the Steinberg download app, not the one under your Cubase license (this way you can use it in other DAWs). Once it’s installed go to the Cubase tab (of the version you own) and download Groove Agent’s content. Boom. For one shot samples Komplete Kontrol (free) is VERY handy, with FX, MPC sampler emulation and VST support to load your effects. For anything more complicated I use Kontakt.

The demo is just bad, every tape saturation fx is going to do that to your kick drum and high frequencies. Obviously you can use it subtly. I'm sure it's great, Softube know what they're doing.

Didn't know that. The it must mean they don't see CbB as relevant enough for them to devote development time into building something that's exclusive to it.

Same thing with Reason RE's. Seemed like a good business idea for developers but it didn't really pan out. VST format is just too prevalent.

I don't look at any of the things you mention, except for music. Everything has become a parody of itself and culture is at a dead end IMO. To be very clear with yourself about what information you let in and what you exclude is a fundamental skill nowadays.

REAPER’s defaults ARE insane and I strongly dislike their lack of interest for UI. I dislike the smug attitude with which they dismiss the need for it even more, and their need to push their political views in version names even more than that. That being said, there IS a “light at the end of the tunnel” when you spend the time customizing it to your needs, even if it feels like there’s no end for it. Its performance, stability and flexibility is truly unmatched by anything else, and I really need that extra juice with my old laptop.

Yeah, it's convenient to have all the FX in one plugin but you could easily replicate it with free plugins. In Wavefrom and Reason 12 you could even build a custom interface to have them all in one window.
