MDI 16 Channels -- a Cakewalk limitation or synth/vst?
abacab replied to Michael McBroom's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
In Cakewalk, the MIDI channels available to a single device is 16. I believe that it was designed to comply with the MIDI standard, over 30 years ago. So there is an actual limit on the number of channels per MIDI port (instrument or device). You can insert multiple devices (ports), each with 16 channels, to get the aggregate number of channels that you require. In the case of TTS-1, you could add a 2nd instance of TTS-1, and use channels 1-16 in the 2nd for additional channels, although they wouldn't be numbered in Cakewalk as ch. 17-32. Each virtual instrument would occupy one 16 channel MIDI port. So for example, two instances of a TTS-1 instrument would require two instrument tracks and end up with [TTS-1 #1 / ch 1-16], [TTS-1 #2 / ch 1-16]. -
Well the first thing to know is that's known as "audio to MIDI" conversion. The resulting MIDI track may or may not be an accurate depending on the nature of the source audio. YMMV. Assuming the the resulting MIDI track(s) are close, you would still need to assign the MIDI to play back through instrument sounds similar to the original. In general "audio to MIDI" conversion does not work well on full arrangements of songs (more than one part), as the technology cannot separate the instrument sounds once they are in a mix. You can't "unmix" audio. So you would probably need to be working with the individual audio tracks. The best results are usually with single instruments that play a single note at a time (solo melody or rhythmic parts). The premium versions of Melodyne can convert harmonic parts with chords of a single instrument.

MDI 16 Channels -- a Cakewalk limitation or synth/vst?
abacab replied to Michael McBroom's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
The limitation is a MIDI standard, not a Cakewalk environment specification. But as scook stated, the limitation is per MIDI cable (port/instrument), not per DAW. You can add as many MIDI ports/instruments as your hardware or DAW can handle, each with 16 MIDI channels. -
Novation Launchkey? I went with Arturia Keylab Essential
abacab replied to ZincT's topic in Instruments & Effects
I finally caved on the Arturia Analog Lab 4 deal for 50% off. ? Now I'm craving one of those Arturia controllers, such as KeyLab Essential 49 at $249 https://www.arturia.com/products/hybrid-synths/keylab-essential-49/overview or Keylab 49 MkII at $499 https://www.arturia.com/products/hybrid-synths/keylab-mkii/overview -

I've noticed quite a few "out of stock" signs on various 49 key controllers at different suppliers and for various brands. I wonder if all the bedroom musicians have been stocking up to stay at home during the Covid-19 outbreak? It might pay to just wait for what you want, rather than settling for what's available at the moment. Nektar Impact LX49+ is currently showing in stock at the Amazon US website. Not so just a few days ago... -
How to make downloaded instruments available in Cakewalk?

Z3TA+2 and Rapture Pro were developed by the Cakewalk dev team, based on Rene's earlier work on the original z3ta+, Dimension Pro, and Rapture. You can see him listed as development lead on those earlier synth's credit pages. Rene had left Cakewalk before the newer versions were released. Rene was the founder of RGC Audio, which Cakewalk had bought, and then hired him. If you look carefully at the Z3TA+2 credits, you will see Rene received credit for the architecture and development of the original z3ta+. Rapture Pro was a convergence of Dim Pro and Rapture, which was possible because both shared the underlying multisample synth technology using .sfz files. Speculation: BandLab probably now owns the IP rights to the software.

I believe that you nailed it right there!

I think I'd be OK with 8 cores locked at 5Ghz. ?

I use wifi isolation on my router for my guest network, and attach all my mobile and IoT gizmos to that. They are happy because they can get to the internet, but it keeps them from connecting to my personal computing environment on the main wifi network. But the point about an attack via an obsolete Win7 OS connected on the main network would still be an issue. Best to isolate that as well...

I wonder what @Jim Roseberryhas to say on the topic? Last I heard he was testing Ryzen processors, but only using Intel for his Studiocat builds... https://studiocat.com/opencart2/index.php?route=common/home

Agree, but either way you would achieve a guaranteed retirement plan! ?

Syntronik vs. Syntronik Samples in Sampletank
abacab replied to David Baay's topic in Instruments & Effects
Peter, thanks for the response! Always appreciate your efforts to bring a better experience to the user community here! With all due respect, I realize your time is limited, so I will recap the conclusion we reached in this thread regarding the main topic: the issue with Syntronik multis in ST4. We used the official ST4 installers, and they are all present and accounted for. With one quirk. They install the Syntronik multis by default with ascending MIDI channel numbers for the individual multi parts. i.e., ch 1, 2, 3, & 4. I have installed the latest multis and instrument sounds. We can only get to where we need to be by manually editing the Syntronik multis for use by ST4, setting all parts back to MIDI channel 1. In comparison, the Syntronik multis when used in ST3, are installed with all parts using MIDI ch 1. That is the only way that the multis can work correctly out of the box, with all parts responding on the same channel to the same MIDI controller. But by default, using the the same multi within ST4 results in only part #1 playing, while the rest remain silent, because they are not assigned to MIDI ch 1. The multis can be manually edited to achieve this, but that really shouldn't be necessary. I am as surprised by this as you might be right now, as these multis have been available for some time. I hadn't noticed this quirk until @David Baay pointed it out. The other multis (non-Syntronik) supplied with ST4 appear to be correct, at least as far as the ones I've looked at. Perhaps folks are still mainly using the Syntronik UI for these multis, I don't know. Steps to recreate the issue: 1. Start SampleTank 4. 2. Open any Syntronik Multi. 3. Only the first part, assigned to MIDI ch 1, will respond (assuming that your controller is sending on ch 1). -
Take a look at the free Melda MCompressor. https://www.meldaproduction.com/MCompressor They also offer a nice bundle of free plugins.

Alternatively, just clean install Win 7, and then keep it offline. Spend your time making music on Windows... ? For online use, just get a used laptop or desktop, and re-purpose it as your internet computer with your chosen flavor of Linux. Or if not a geek, just use a ChromeBook for your online needs... Plug and Play! I say this as someone who has been running computers since the 70's, and Linux on and off since Red Hat 9 (2003).

I was wondering the same thing. I tried the demo last year. It had some good qualities, but seemed a work in progress at the time...

I prefer disabling my onboard audio, and just using my audio interface for all sounds in my PC. But that seems to work best in my case if I leave the sample rate for everything set at 44,100 Hz. Otherwise I sometimes have to fiddle when switching between DAW and Windows audio sources using the same interface, if the sources are set to different rates.

If they are x64 VST2, maybe look in "C:\Program Files\VstPlugIns". Or, if you know the plugin name, you could do a search in explorer to identify the correct path. Otherwise, you could run the installer again, and make note to what folder path they install the VST2 into. Some installers will make their own path. I know, crazy, right? But there are no fixed rules like with VST3 always in common files. Once you find the correct path, make sure it is listed in Cakewalk's VST scan paths. Then reset and scan again.

I bought the Studio One Pro crossgrade when Cakewalk went under. It comes with some decent instruments and effects that would be great for a first time DAW user. But they are locked to Studio One. So you can't use them anywhere else. Anybody that is crossgrading from another DAW is likely to already have their own favorite instruments and effects. So you may or may not want to use the S1 bundled plugins. But they are available, and generally decent. It comes with a sampler/ROMpler called Presence XT. I don't use it much, so not sure how it compares with Rapture Pro. The good news is that most of the Cakewalk Sonar bundle will work in Studio One Pro. The Cakewalk plugins except for Adaptive Limiter are good. Addictive Drums is fine, as well as Celemony. There were a few 3rd party plugins from AAS, 4Front, and Overloud that were licensed for Sonar only.

Syntronik vs. Syntronik Samples in Sampletank
abacab replied to David Baay's topic in Instruments & Effects
Funny thing, ST3 throws the same error as Syntronik when opening an edited Syntronik multi from ST4. But if you open any other Syntronik multi in ST3, all parts are defaulted to MIDI channel 1. So as you suggested, opening up the Syntronik multis in ST3, then just saving with no edits works! It changes the multi to channel 1 across the board in ST4, and it still opens up in Syntronik without throwing an error! -
Rapture DefaultRegion.sfz and DefaultEffects.sfz

I still like the old Rapture, had some great sounds, especially in the Expansion Packs 1 & 2! I use the Rapture Session as a browser for my Rapture and Dim Pro content. Never did get around to acquiring Rapture Pro before it was discontinued... -

Very interesting! Surprised that they share data. There must be something else that the "save" operation does in ST4 beyond just modifying the MIDI channel tag in the .st3m file!
