  1. @mdiemer   I had a college text book from quite a few years ago, MIDI Orchestration I believe it was called, and went through building it up. You are right it was tedious but I did a few mock ups using some old church type music.  It was actually fun slowly working on it. Now in my old age I don't if i have the patience anymore :D

Syntronik Deluxe and Analog Lab 4 cover a LOT of sonic ground.

I don't need the full synths. The only sound I ever design is the one my computer makes when I fall asleep and face-plant on the keyboard.  ?

You are forgetting the sounds you make after having St. Patties day Cabbage or Taco Bell ?

I don’t have any kids yet so my suggestion is blow his college fund, get him the $300 laptop, enroll him in some free online programming classes so he can pay his own education,  and get yourself a new fully packed studio....this may not be the best advice but just exploring other side of coin to give you more options :)

Now you come up with that idea. Thanks for nothing. My kids are 18 and soon to be 17!  Remember your post when you have kids of your own ?

  4. Came home just now to my daughter playing Fortnite on the desktop computer.  She needed to blow off some steam. She was at school for Science Olympics setting up. They are going to do some virtual events and they were practicing.  First event for her since the pandemic.  She said I don't care if it is 20 below zero I'm going.  I think she jinxed us with the weather as it is 0 degrees outside now!    I think you can have the computer but you as the parent have to make sure your kids have balance and they don't need the fanciest one on the block.

    Peace

I don't often wander around the forum site but the main pages are real boring now. Same stupid questions over and over. It's great to help people who are truly stuck, but most of these people seem to think for themselves. 99% of the questions are easily Googled.

One thing I just noticed as I answered a post here about a dead laptop, is we no longer have a Hardware Forum? That was one of my favorites on the old site.

Any of you old Hosts, I know that you are all hiding down here-- have any pull around here and can see if we could bring back the Hardware sub forum?

We asked quite a few times about having it added and so far no luck :(

  6. Plus I never would be able to afford the Alesis Andromeda. So with the  knockoff-Galaxy I have something close. I got to play the real thing a couple times and it was cool to create sounds.  So  to have 22 synths in the Deluxe version,  even only with preset sounds galore is okay with/for me.

That would be the only way for people to care about Syntronik in the first place.

I guess I'm the odd one then. I don't have the time to play around with the music as would like so Syntronik fits the bill for me at the moment.  Sure I get what you are saying and if I had the time I would love to go the pure Synth route.   Especially for the price, Syntronik on sale is a sweet deal. YMMV :D

Tell him to think on and just be grateful for all the things he already has. That when you were his age all you had to play with was a stick and and if you were really lucky you got an orange for xmas. That you were so poor that for your 13th birthday you only got a yo, because despite having three jobs your poor old pa couldn't afford a yo-yo.

That is the cheapest option by far.

A little cruel IMO.  I know what you are getting at as my dad came from Europe after WWII with literally nothing for a fresh start.   Both my parents worked full time jobs plus we barely were making it growing up.  So if you do have the funds to spend on your kids without going overboard I see that as a plus.

  9. I got a 2n1 laptop for my daughter for remote learning. She wanted a nice gaming laptop but came to her senses that see would use the active stylus more for school. Yes she still games on it at times but not the latest titles. Don't ask me what as I'm not a gamer.  I had an extra monitor so she that hooked up and uses a gaming mouse that she got for her Birthday.  So just a thought to consider.   My daughter is really happy as she uses the pen everyday especially for Chemistry and AP math class.

  10. If you have a Costco membership and in USA they have some nice AMD Ryzen gaming laptops under $1,000.00. Just make sure you get the 4000 series chip and not the 3000 series chip. Also if you do go Costco route and have there credit card you get extra protection included  if you pay by the Costco Visa.

With all that is messed up in the world, is it really worth getting bent out of shape because a software company is not compensating you for already having the product they are giving away?

It is what we do :(    I have a BA in it. B***h-Anonymous   Oh shoot I'm not suppose to tell you that ;)

As for the ability to run on Bandlab, no need for it personally.  Just about everyone owns a laptop these days for some kind of on-the go.  Using an android phone is basically a gimic for music production.  Sure it can be done, but it is more of an annoyance than it is worth.  IMO

    You do have a point.
