ahem - rollback plan - ahem

if i had any investment in waves this would not help my opinion of them or their it/business acumen

    but it's not really a rollback ? It's a rollforward

They are not stopping the subscription or the various other 'new' things they announced - they are having to hack the perpetual licences and WUP back into the current running system, and I assume some people bought the subscription ?

It's much, much harder proposition than just going back to the backup from Sunday morning.  Sounds like hard work to me ?

but I agree it wouldn't help my opinion of their business acumen.

  2. ^^yep that's a bit cheeky.  Not the only company to do that of course, but not a good look.

There are lots of other options, including lots of open source stuff complete with machine learning training data.  It's the specific workflow aspects and training data that some of the vendors bring that adds the value

Just received an email to tell me I can now WUP. And will I?

unless you really need to WUP today for technical reasons it's usually best to wait until you really need to before you WUP - or if they add enough plugins to your bundles to make it worth while (which never happens any more).  Also depending on what you've got it sometimes cheaper to UPGRADE to another bundle than WUP as this gives you the WUP plus extra plugs....so if you wait you may get a bigger deal ?

    obviously YMMV.

In the short term there is no way they will remove WUP after this week so you are safe for a bit.

A week ago it was $250 for me (got it a reseller for $223).

maybe you added something that was still wupped ? or if you wup more than one licence for the same product.

Otherwise it was capped at $240.  I think that figure hasn't changed since WUP started.

We would like to update you that effective immediately, you can once again renew your Waves Update Plan in order to update perpetual plugin and bundle licenses. This option will remain in place going forward.*

    *...until we decide otherwise :D

  7. I think it was always capped at $240 assuming there were no duplicates or stuff still in WUP

    it's still pretty screwy though.

Just checked - to WUP my mercury - inspire - SSL - abbey road is $240 but as soon as a I add a random 'lil tube that I picked up free and has a few months left it jumps up $400.  'Twas ever thus I suppose

It's funny, they were able to switch there system over immediately,

not sure it's funny (either haha or peculiar ?)

I bet the web and IT teams had been planning on that change for months - with test environments and all kinds of account migration stuff going on.  That was a big change in the infrastructure.

It's not as simple as pressing 'undo' - I would think that it's a nightmare job unravelling it all.

Windows defender doesnt' like it.  It keeps preventing the install claiming that it contains a Trojan

lots and lots of threads about this on the NI forums - happening to lots of NI updates, and quite a few other companies affected too.

NI themselves said they have investigated and it's 100% clean - and defender has been a bit over vigilant recently.    NI also suggest doing a windows update, if you haven't already.

    edit

abacab beat me to it :)

Brillant marketing on Waves part - like the Coke/Coke Classic move in 1985 regardless of their motivations it raised Cokes profits that year 14%.
For Wave - tons of free publicity, lots of sales generated by people trying to obtain permanent licenses or WUP before the deadline and they flushed out all the old license codes that were out in the wild.   Despite some potentially grump customers - a win/win situation for Waves.

It's possible that they may do well out of it in the short term - I suspect lots will WUP to make sure they are on the latest version just in case it happens again. Who knows what the long term damage is going to be though - and if they feel they need to do something to help undue the reputational damage.

Less than zero chance it was the plan all along (IMO).  They knew they were going to get some flack, like they have before, but they didn't count on the very aggressive 'pile on' nature that social media has adopted in 2023.

As a very non-political aside, the wonderful digital audio trainer, Eli Krantzberg, noted, on pro-tools-expert how coincidentally the situation with Waves mirrored other events in Tel Aviv at the moment.

Like others have said, I'd have love to have been a fly on the wall

I just figured that out and installed v2. I guess that I expected Native Access to inform me of new versions like all of the other app managers. Not so for this major upgrade. Live and learn.

unfortunately it's more complicated than that

V2 (actually V3!) is causing issues for some users so they are rolling it out in small batches.   They claim 650k users have switched but still quite a few to go - that gives an idea how many NI customers there are.

There's a post on the NI forum about it all.

FWIW I'm still on V1 too

  12. there are 2 versions currently supported

V1.14.1 - which is the last version of the V1 - no future development

V2 - which is rather oddly V3.21 - NI made a mess of the version numbers and seem to be sticking with it.

May be getting closer to new Cubase.

It's true that we are definitely getting closer - but I suspect it could be a long way off yet.

For various reasons they never released v11.5 and skipped straight to v12.  That was after 16 months and deviated from what had become a fairly regular yearly cycle.

Patches for v12 have been very slow and I think they are pretty bogged down.

    Hopefully I'm wrong ?
