I don't believe the plugins would stop working after that amount of time in Cakewalk or any DAW. The business model seems to be they sell you a bunch of plugins at a low price and then sell WUP to periodically upgrade them. They often seem to throw in a face lifted plugin with the new WUP or new plugins completely as part of the WUP. 

The benefit to you is if you don't upgrade for a long time the plugins almost always continue to work since they weren't buggy to begin with. The way they have managed to get more $$ in the past was the WUP portal was upgraded and they required you to upgrade the portal which also mean't they requested you to upgrade your WUP.

In the case of updated portal and versioning, you could opt not to upgrade the portal and still use the plugins as is. If you already own a few plugins it is sometimes advantageous for new users to get a package like Waves Gold because it includes the most recent WUP. 

It is clear that Waves would like for you to upgrade periodically. They usually correct small bugs in some plugins and guarantee you future updates for a certain amount of time though I have never noticed any bugs in the first place.. My WUP was somewhere in the neighborhood of 250.00 US for my Horizon Bundle and an assortment of other additional plugins. I haven't WUPd yet and probably won't for some time. The best thing to do is wait for WUP sales on the deals forum around Black Friday. Additional discounts can be had through vendors like Plugin Boutique. For my collection I don't think it's unreasonable to WUP on a sale every so often. Especially if they are making larger changes like VST3 and adding additional plugins. The price seems equally high if you only have a few plugins so you are better off WUPing a collection.

I wish Waves would offer a WUP for all since not all of my plugins are expired when the others Need WUP.

So long as Cakewalk accepts VST 2 and 3 I don't see these plugins ever becoming obsolete only dated after a long time. Other options would be Melda Production. They are more expensive but you never pay another cent for updates for the life of the plugin. There's also IK Mutimedia plugins if you invest in TRacks .

None of these guys force you to do anything to keep using a plugin after so long. 

In your opinion, which DAW is the best for audio editing?  Cakewalk does pretty well for me for most of the things I do when it comes to audio editing. Sometimes I need to go close in on the waveform to see close detail. Do you see one DAW shining in that capability? 

I have heard that Pro Tools is the one to use for that. I have been tempted to download the free version of it to see how the audio editing in it works. I have Sound Forge  but wondered if there was something better.

Great deal on these magazines. I bought a handful and will probably buy more copies of CMM. Hard to go wrong if you see an article you like. What's BitWig 8 track? Is that their trial version? That looks like a free download.

I really like your computer art work Kenny. It stimulates the imagination and believe me. My mind is sometimes tough to stimulate.

Not only that but this art work made me hungry. Of course just about everything makes me hungry. How about you? What could you go for right about now? Take out these days is wonderful. You live in NY so I guess it's always been nice there. Forget the ambiance, you can go anywhere here and they will come out to your car and load you up.  Went to Texas Roadhouse the other day for take out. Man,....make you slap your momma.

I noticed the fork is glowing. Sadly he might be standing there being electrocuted as we speak. Poor soul put it right into one of those floor receptacles we sometimes see on stages. He might already be dead. He looks like he's either daydreaming or his brain is fried. Yep, a crisply critter for the giants.

That phrase is new to me. What part of the world does that come from?  I heard a guy use it the other day for the first time. I think I would be able to share a fig or two strictly speaking. I had Studio One before Cakewalk went under but didn't use it much until about a year ago. I have continued to update it every so often. I have the latest Pro version.I now find that I switch back and forth all depending on my project needs. For fast song assembly and ease of operation Cakewalk still wins that on all fronts. In terms of sound quality neither one is better than the other. Both have signal chains. They seem easier to find for someone new in SO4 IMHO.

Studio One doesn't come all loaded up with extra programs but there are a few decent romplers in it and drum pad type percussion. TBH I rarely have the need to use those because of the way I work. You might be different. What it has isn't bad but it isn't extensive and I doubt it will cover all of your bases. 

The plugins are another thing though. I think they are better than the stock plugins in most DAWS.  IOW You might not need Cakewalk plugins. My feeling about the program so far is that the guys who are designing it seem to be more into electronic music  and the direction lately has been for people playing with synths and midi manipulation.  Some German dude makes the demos I have seen lately and you can tell he is mostly into that from his setup and videos.To clarify, the trickle down benefit from that is some great  features that all of us can use. If you are a straight "meat and potatoes" kind of musician who mainly wants to track guitars or similar it's great for that. The workflow in it reminds me of Cakewalk in some ways even though the graphics are totally different. For included instruments I would give it a 5 out of 10 since I'm not overwhelmed by those. Knowing what I know about you, I doubt they will trip your trigger either. I could be wrong. 

On mixing, workflow and plugins I would give it an 8 or a 9. Takes some getting used to but not much. I would definitely go with the top pro version but that's me. Good suggestion from Paulo, Give it a try see what you think. Might be a good time to jump in since there's probably a new version coming out soon.

If the Scarlett is selected in windows audio or sounds then yes you will get all sound from the computer. Not sure if this is a default once you load the Scarlett drivers. You might need to select it as your main audio source which isn't a difficult thing to do.

Things get a little more complicated if you are trying to record multiple audio sources and either make a movie or stream. For instance recording your voice and a webcam shot of you explaining a DAW while the DAW is running and still have sound to all of it. I have been using VoiceMeeter Banana for that  although there are other ways to do it.

I love the new arranger feature. I watched the Creative Sauce arranger video. It was worth watching to see Mike acting like a clown playing that radio demo or whatever it was.

I have a unique ability to take something that's supposed to be simple and mucking it up in some way. I was sliding things around in the arranger and my parts were all cut up and moved around in bad ways. I almost wore out CTRL+Z to the point that Microsoft is ready to levy a fee on me for over use.I did it so much that now when I sleep at night instead of ZZZZZZZzzzzzzz, it's CTRL+ZZZzzzzzzzzzz.

Once I learn what not to do I'll be ok. That might be awhile. Admittedly, I didn't read the directions yet. That usually takes the fun out of the whole process.

The actual fig content in one of those fig newtons is not much. Mostly sugar, enriched cookie and just enough "fig" to legally get away with calling it a fig newton. I Like them though. At least this was how I FIGured it.

I think all of the Air products are a great value. I accidentally ended up with Xpand!2. I must have downloaded it with some other Air instruments as a demo at some point. I don't remember intentionally downloading it. Might have been part of a package.  In any case, what happened was I kept getting pop ups that I had it and it wasn't registered. Rather than delete it, for something like 8$ I bought it. Already had Xpand.  

I was pleasantly surprised. Clearly lots of man hours went into the synth and the presets. It's a nice piece of software kit. Still has relevant sounds IMHO. Doesn't sound like the dated sounds we sometimes hear in older hardware mock ups. Any synth with that many presets is bound to have a few cheesy presets and this is no exception.

It isn't my go to because I mostly play mock ups and sample libraries. If I'm hunting for a unique synth sound this is on my list with maybe a dozen other synths.. If I had Omnisphere that probably wouldn't be the case. Crowded pad atmospheres tend to be very similar to me in actual mix use. "Something that sounds like strings and something else" is too common for me and I grow tired of that.

I don't use TTS-1 at all so can't comment. 

IMHO Mixcraft was the only DAW that looked "cartooney" a few years back. They have since refined that DAW appearance and now it looks pretty slick.

Cakewalk might seem that way to someone coming from something like Cubase, although if you remember there were lots of disgruntled user when C-base changed their GUI

While I agree some customization to GUI  would be a nice addition to Studio One I find it a very workable DAW. Workflow was easy for me to get a hold on at the basic level. I still haven't gotten on board with the chord track.  When I want chord I ideas I pick up a guitar or play it on the keyboard. I like the arranger concept. With this feature now integrated into Cakewalk it would be tough for someone to cross over who only has Cakewalk ... My main reason for sometimes using Studio One>   it integrates into Notion 6 and that's a killer combination for anyone who needs or wants to have sheet music available.  It is a very stable DAW and I don't find myself looking for very long when attempting to do anything in it. Very intuitive.

But you didn't ask me what I liked you asked me what I would like to see in the future.

- Faster startup. Seems to take forever to boot up compared to CbB. 

That's really the only nit I have with it at all. Runs on Mac and PC, has advanced mastering features. The included plugins are all great. I probably won't use all of the features in Studio One 4 Pro. They could begin to add some of the features found in Cubase. Maybe a drum program instead of a  DJ pads and loops. How about a vocal correction program? A better synth program similar to Halion in Cubase? Most DAWS havbe glorified romplers . Cakewalk offered serious synths in zT3a+2. Those are the things that made Sonar Platinum so formidable. If they could design these "in house" instead of tacking on 3rd party programs I think that would be a Cubase Killer indeed.  Presonus already have so much going for them in having a huge hardware line that "talks" the Studio One language. They upped the game in adding reduced latency programming. 

None of those add ons would make the DAW any better as a core program, however they would really sweeten the idea that you could do it all with one program. 

I really don't know what else they could put into the program that I could use.

I have had the occasional crash in both CbB and Studio One 4 Pro, so I don't think it's necessarily an issue with CbB.  Doesn't happen often but has happened. 

I can only speculate since I'm not as into the innards of these programs as a few of our resident geniuses are    VST 3 put more of a demand on the graphics . I love those larger GUIs using VST3 with some plugins. I think the flipside to some of that is more demand on the graphics of some computers. While I have a video card that is pretty decent I am beginning to wonder if some of the issue is my Nvidi a drivers not always playing well with the graphics in ST. I only say this because I have enough memory and a fairly fast PC. When I launch ST4 it doesn't hesitate on sound files loading or general operation of the program. Something is occasionally tripping it up though.

As Matthew says it could be the ASIO4ALL driver. At one time ASIO4ALL was recommended here extensively for anyone who didn't have dedicated drivers. The Behringer U-Phoria UM-2 is only 50 bucks and they now have a dedicated driver for it. No guarantees that this will fix your issue but it would get you set up with decent monitoring and latency. The Behringer has a Midas designed preamp and can accept two 1/4" phono plugs. I just bought one to take an AUX send out of a Behringer X18 and into a laptop for a live broadcast feed.  Limited to 16/44.1. Not really a deal breaker. 

The frustrating things for me is the ST 4 crash only happens occasionally and I don't get a crash dump. It just closes down and might seize my DAW.  I recommend you put CbB on auto backup or remember to save frequently so you don't get frustrated if it decides to do it again. Part of my issue may be that I am also often running other programs in the background that might be conflicting with ST.

This probably brings back lots of memories for you. The song itself is really nice.  The breaking up sound is a bit much for me personally. If the sound  itself is baked in I might try some EQ work on the guitar track, but that's me and maybe you like the effect.
