Sorry , I thought the option was in the lane dialogue but it found in preferences.

Don’t get me wrong I realize how important multiple takes are and how widely used they are by duffers as well as some of the very best players and singers. I just think until a new user gets the hang of basic recording they should use overwrite mode as it definitely is more straight forward to use. I’m only assuming this because if comping mode is confusing to me it must be very confusing to a new user. They say there’s Linear and Abstract thinking. I must be Linear. And I realize how indecisive some creators can be too. I’m not. I write songs and in my head is a complete vision of the songs parts and how they will sound. I sit down and keep playing the part until I learn it and then hit record. That’s just my old school, tape deck methodologies and that my music is very traditional. There’s a zillion other workflows one could use to create music. And for some noodles and riffs are how they do it. And then some don’t have real creative skills so they use tools like Band in Box . As long as we are staying out of trouble all is good. Music in any form it therapeutic.

The colours are found if you open the lane and open the option dialogue boxes you can choose custom colours etc. open the lane hold the mouse on a lane and choose delete envelope. I’m pretty sure envelopes can’t hide. Are you sending the track to a bus? You could always export the track or bounce and exclude all effects and automation and that way use a new track location

Signal flow. In the Effects bin or Pro channel the processor is 100% in the signal path. The effect needs a mix control as part of it's design so you can blend in as much as needed. Things like compressors are normally 100% in the pathway. But say a chorus or reverb effect you would want only a certain amount of wet to dry in the mix. So for those, some times a send to a bus which is a parallel signal, works best. There's no right or wrong but you need to always be aware of the signal path.

The screen shot doesn't really tell me much as there's no reference to time. As in is that a whole song or a 3 second clip?

MIDI and audio mixing at the same time not possible

I have this one template I keep forgetting to fix that defaults to comping. I’ll have recorded midi parts that I’m unaware of the underlying garbage until I go to copy paste and when I slip edit there they are revealed from the hiding place. Another thing can happen is Melodyne can get messed up. It’s easy to fix and I take it in stride as being my own fault. But I am contrary to many of Cakewalks defaults and I can sympathize with new users who some of these defaults can trip up. To me Comping mode is an advanced feature and the default settings should be Overwrite just like any other Recording device or Wave editor or DAW. My all time favourite default is the Basic Workspace. Why would you hide dozens of features by default? And then hide the toggle in a tiny box and name it obscurely. Apparently most people who have used Sonar/Cakewalk since the beginning of time are still unaware of what a Workspace is and actually does. I like Movie Makers approach. Big huge tab right in plain site says Expert mode.

I've been using Cakewalk for a long, long time. I also managed to figure out punching in and sound on sound in on Tape based machines... this take lanes has had me baffled since day one. I have tried it many times and ended up with a total mess. I read the manual, I have figured out how to use just about everything in Cakewalk and how it works,,,, but not this. Is it just me and my linear thinking? I find it much easier to simply record 2 or 3 different real actual tracks and use parts of those to compile a signal track if needed. Ultimately nothing ever goes south on me when I do that. Take lanes has a mind of it's own. Comping Mode results in a bunch of layers of garbage hiding beneath my actual finished tracks. Sorry I just have never understood it's purpose. Unless you are a recording hoarder and just can't stand tossing out the garbage. If I screw up a take I re do it,, I totally don't want to keep screwed takes. End of rant..

For this very reason I have always used Overwrite mode. It is found in preferences but the quick way to get there is to RIGHT CLICK the RECORD button in the transport module to open the preference dialogue. It's one of those annoying default setting. Instant mess. I prefer to delete bad takes by recording over them. Why would I want to keep a bad take?

Op not interested so removing post

Cakewalk staff view is very limited and is not really intended to be used in any advanced scoring. Its main use is for people who would rather work in this domain than Piano Roll for editing.

My DAW has 10 GB of Memory. I never have to do what you are doing, I've never had to freeze tracks etc. and I think we write the same sort of songs. Only thing I have never used is Kontakt.

Sorry I probably copied my link from within the editing software. It’s in my signature and in the tutorial sub forum as well. I fixed it. My reference to midi can be unreliable under certain conditions. I too started performing using midi files and an Atari computer with sound modules in about 1984. Stuck notes, wrong patch changes etc. were pretty common for us back then. So possibly my experience with midi was resolved with better hardware latter on. But I learned to not trust it to always sound the same. I was happy when the Sony Mini disk system came out in the 90's as that not only remove 100 lbs of gear, it was rock solid dependable. I still have all my original Midi files and many of my backing tracks started life back then. My latest live performance playback is I now make videos of some the songs that in my old age I'm rusty about lyrics. Yep, sort of Karaoke but not quite. The lyrics don't scroll they just display 4 lines at a time as the song progresses so it's more like using a song book. I might even add reminders like don't forget the capo! The backing tracks are the same as I've always used just Drums, bass and Keyboards. They have always been high quality Wave files. Even the Mini Disk was very high quality. Now the VST instruments I use are way better than those sounds from my old Korg module. The Ample P bass lite is the first midi bass I've every given a thumb's up too ever. The rest sound like someone farting to me. I made many backing tracks that featured real bass and sometimes real drums. Those were some of my very first Cakewalk project about 2004. I have a whole Cakewalk playlist rig set up but I find a few issues with it being slower for things like if I decide to skip a bunch of songs. I use Win Amp and a foot switch. Also the video view seems buggy. My only reason for thinking of using the playlist is one band I have we are all multi instrumentalists who like to play bass. I wanted optional mixes. In the end it was easier just to create those mixes as split stereo with the bass in the left and drums in the right. We run the Bass track to a bass amp and have a A/B switch to swap out to the real bass.

The You Lean meter is very light load and I have it on hundreds of projects I export. I never turn it off. It is not likely the cause of an export issue or thousands of people would report it. I think the best solution is to capture that crash dump an have some one look at it If it is Trillion I will be listed as a cause of the crash. If your SSD drive is a Samsung they have a diagnostic tool. I thought my drive was needing replacement and I ordered a new one in the box was the info about the tool app so I installed it and it showed both my Samsung drives as being 100 % healthy. https://semiconductor.samsung.com/consumer-storage/magician/

A workaround would be to import them into Reaper or a Wave editor like Audacity and re save them which would clear the weird data added by the Zoom.

But the difference is the Roland Concerto even though discontinued is available from a trusted source. And for anyone interested I found info on it here. Wasn't anything on the Roland site about free download. https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2022/07/01/roland-concerto-free/

I made a series of tutorials that will bring you up to speed quickly on Cakewalk. A lot has changed and there's even a new easier way to insert instrument tracks now. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGt7K5L5fUIUF_UjCsdAVCbd

Abandonware. Use at your own risk. I was going to try it but I personally avoid software that is abandoned and hard to find. I hope you scanned the heck out of the files. Especially if it used an installer that can be super risky.

Melodyne 4 came for free with older versions of both Sonar and then Cakewalk. Soon after the update to Melodyne 5 they changed it so it was now only a demo that lasts about 30 days. If you have Melodyne 4 it will continue to work for Tempo extraction as well as Convert monophonic audio ( Bass) to midi. But the editor stops functioning after 30 days. If you have Sonar PLat you should have the Melodyn 4 serial and the installer is in the Command Center. T You can open Melodyne editor and see what version as well as if it is still activated. Melodyne will be listed under Celemony on the list of programs in the start menu and can be opened as a stand alone app. The version is found under the About in the help menu. There was some noticeable performance improvements with Melodyne 5. I decided to purchase a better version as for me it pays for it self almost daily. Cakewalk is free. why not spend the money on something that makes it much more powerful? It goes on sale regularly. I saved over $200 by upgrading during a sale. If you do have version 4 from Sonar check you Celemony account to see if there is an upgrade offer still available. I use the tempo extraction a lot, I use the convert Bass parts to midi a lot, I convert lead guitar parts to midi a lot, I edit both Vocal and full guitar chords a lot, and not just pitch but timing, level ( amplitude) and duration. All done in Melodyne. Their web site has some of the best tutorials around. That's when I really got the hang of what it does.
-
And now we use Melodyne to do what Audio Snap did.

If you need to dig a little deeper it means Read the F******** manual its been around since the beginning of user forums for software and fixing your Truck.

And also thinking about what you said about playing Cakewalk live, Have you tried the Playlist feature? That's what it's for. It manages the different projects for you and loads them up while the last one is playing. You can play both hardware and software instruments at the same time as well as have audio tracks. That's what I do so there's no weirdness. I use all audio tracks. In over 2 decades of live gigs audio has never failed me. Midi can have issues. Midi 2.0 promises to fix that however.

I think your saving as a Midi file. You need to use Normal file format CWP to create projects. Midi files only save the data and the TTS_1 is Cakewalks default to play midi files. A lot of this I covered in the midi tutorials. which are here on my new playlist. Scroll down to around the 9th video where I start explaining midi stuff. Looks like he beat me to it by 3 seconds... https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGt7K5L5fUIUF_UjCsdAVCbd
