question regarding the new update coming up
John Vere replied to greg54's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Just to set this right, This is the old Cakewalk site this page is called Versions and includes Pricing from those days as well as a comprehensive list of what you get in each version. https://taylor.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Versions#start I still have Sonar Professional which is a totally different installer and serial numbers than my copy of Sonar Platinum. At the time there was no way I was going to pay $300 more for features that didn't interest me. But they must have offered a deal to upgrade and I took the bait. If I remember it was only $150. And I even got Professional at a discount as an upgrade from X3. My account shows Sonar Pro Jan 2015 then Splat June 2015. I am thinking we will be returning to something very similar in marketing and pricing. As I said in another thread it would seem that those of us who already own all the extra goodies might not need to pay for the full version. But somehow I think they got that one figured out too. New goodies!! Ya! -
It's official: CbB will not continue for long.

Good point, Yes folks please don't look at that and think this is real. Just an example of what is possible if we do have versions. It also gives you examples of how adding more goodies is really what you are paying the extra for. -

I know as much as anybody else. The problem is information is scattered amongst a dozen threads. But Yes one of the developers mentioned that there will be different version. And why not? My educated purely speculative guess is we are about to return to how things were with Sonar Platinum series. My video explains some of this. https://youtu.be/dJBT3cs8ILw But since I made the video I have learned a few new little tidbits. Totally not official but mentioned by staff: Free starter version, ( possibly like Pro Tools Intro? ) Projects from Cakewalk will be transferable to Next. At this point it is not clear if this will be direct. As in a CWP will open in Next or that if the project needs to be uploaded to Bandlab and then brought back to Next. What this implies is absolutely nobody needs to change DAW's based on financial situations. This is the Old Sonar Pricing anyone want to speculate on how close this will be to the new one! If you go to that page https://taylor.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Versions#start and scroll down you will also see how all the features and add-ons were only found in Splat. Someone straitened me out when I said we had been using a $500 DAW but they were correct and it has actually been Sonar Professional because of the missing add-ons. So CbB is only a $200 DAW. But here's the catch. Nobody else has mentioned this so not sure if it crossed your mind. All of use long time users that owned Splat got the goodies already. We paid for them back then. So unless they sweeten the pot with something we don't have, we might only have to purchase Sonar Artist or Professional. Of course only using old names as an example. -

Have you not been following what is said? There will be versions at different levels and price points just like with Sonar Platinum series. Including a Free version. There is absolutely zero reasons for ANYONE to be at all upset about what is going to happen. -
True but for that I just use the D key and quickly toggle between the Multi dock and Track views. I work a lot in single screen mode because I'm using my second monitor for all sorts of other things like a document open, screen capture. I'm hoping for a 3rd monitor with my new set up. Or I'll buy 2 of those huge wide ones. It will be a different world when we get Sonar and it's new GUI.

I decided to produce a video on this topic hoping it might reach more people who need to know what is happening. For the first time in over a year I posted it to Facebook, I'm curious to what they are saying as at this point they are obviously not in the loop like we are. UPDATE Sept 15- I pulled the video due to the comments getting out of hand. My mistake for posting to Facebook. Two of the Cakewalk user group pages removed it right away because I think the Admin disagreed. Show's you why Facebook is a dumb place to actually get information from because it will be biased. . Seems a few people felt my claim that Cakewalk was due to be discontinued was "False information" That's odd because if it was, the Staff, who have seen this thread, would have most certainly questioned it's title. The misinformation is all over the place with the worst one being many are saying CbB will be unlocked and you can use it forever. Sorry folks. seems this is not going to happen. Why would they do that, they are a business not a charity. -
I'm glad you said this because it's exactly how I feel. I realize there are many people on this planet who don't have a dime, and free stuff is cool so you can mess around and make your beats and learn what it's like to use fully featured software. But as a musician, making and recording music has always cost me money. The first dollar I earned as a kid with a paper route went towards my first guitar. And on and on. And even these days I'm retired so there's not much spare money for gear and software but moneys not hard to find if you know where to look for it. So I have very little sympathy for the non musicians who think making music should be a free ride. It is so amazingly cheap to build a home studio now thanks to the software. And you can defiantly use this software to earn money. So that is what I do. I use Cakewalk to make backing tracks and I go make money to pay for it. There's even a small possibility my original songs I record with Cakewalk will bare fruit someday with a small royalty check. Simple really. There are a lot of options open to the folks who won't be able to afford even $10 for software. I was just researching to make a video about the end of Cakewalk and found this thread, I also noticed a whole bunch of videos with titles like " Best 10 free DAW's" . You've got lots of time to finish all your Cakewalk projects before you are locked out. Or simply support the company and purchase Sonar.

Because I want to plunk the track back in the original location as it will be already set up correctly. This also results in clearing away all the unnecessary info that Cakewalk would need to read the original fragmented track. Nothing like shiny new audio tracks that start and end this alone is CPU friendly stuff. I think exporting at 48/32 no dithering will do no harm to the audio. Certainly a lot less damage than a tape bounce!

Ya @Craig Anderton I seem to remember a few other company's including Studio one offered us a generous discount to switch over. I also remember the kindness of companies like Overloud would gave us Unlock keys to their plug ins. -
As I said in my update I'm bumping this old thread and then I liked a bunch of you so you can read what you were thinking 2 years ago.

Yes Melodyne is one of those tools I avoided for years and would just re sing out of pitch parts instead. Then they baited me with an upgrade so now I spent $100 I dang well better figure it out and start using it. That was 4 years ago and I'm still on the steep part of the hill. And I also upgraded all the way to Editor so I can now clean up guitar tracks too. I quickly learned not to overdue it. My pitch is actually always very close on a good day. So sometime all I do is use that note centering slider and clean up any artifacts. I always work with very short clips. I cut my vocal tracks into what is a line from the lyrics. It's when I record my own harmony parts I dig in and abuse Melodyne. I found I like the sound if I pull all the pitch lines almost flat as well as fix timing and the levels. I will play the harmony part on a synth and get that sounding the way I want it then I kill most of the mix and sing along with that. Sometimes this sounds good sometimes not. But I've developed a pretty quick workflow were I can fly through a whole song in a few hours. I assigned the Z key to open Melodyne editor and the X key renders it. Boy did that speed things up.

Bandlab bought Cakewalk because they saw a opportunity as a business. A music business. It came with a small dedicated user base that was at the time PO’d. Many had already jumped ship and purchased other DAWS. Seems Studio one was were most of those people went. So think about what they had bought and where it stood in the DAW community. Not very good at all. Generally it had a reputation as a buggy DAW that couldn’t be trusted for pro studios. I think the plan they developed was brilliant from a marketing and business standpoint. Definitely thinking out side the box. How to both overcome the bad rep and build up a larger user base. Simple. Make it free and hire the dedicated staff and set them loose to make it as bulletproof as possible. They most certainly met or exceeded those goals. And they even won back a lot of people who jumped ship. How many threads have I seen started with- “ I tried Studio one but I prefer Cakewalk’s workflow “. Ok on to phase II. We should all be proud to have been part of this process that will result in most of us getting what we wanted. A solid DAW that can now stand head to head with the rest and will be a lot more popular in the DAW community. Good work Bandlab and Cakewalk team. You deserve a pat on the back.- 178 replies

Download the You lean loudness meter and put it after a peak limiter like the Loud Max on you master bus . I set the loud max at -1.0 db. Then the You lean meter will tell me my LUFS. I aim for -14 LUFS. Lots of info about loudness on the web. If your song is peaking over -1.0 db and only -16 LUFS then you need to mute busses until you find what it is that is causing the higher peaks. It could be a snare or a boomy bass. Also install Span and see what you frequencies look like. This might tell you where your monitors are lying to you

@David Baay This is totally true the track inspector screwed me up many times just like you are saying , so I stopped using it a long time ago. I have Console view on second monitor and that’s where I open the pro channel and add stuff. @Bass Guitar Glad you pointed that out because that exactly what I do. Remove all those unwanted modules and I actually only have the EQ in the saved default. And it is turned off. I’ve never had a module turn it self on that’s actually impossible. The switchboard would have been lit up like Christmas tree 10 years ago.

If I can cheat—/- I cheat. Midi most certainly taught me that. Now I’m figuring out how to do the same with audio. But in the end I do the cheating and hate the result so pick up my guitar and a shot of whiskey and then nail it in the first take because that 6 hours of editing to get what I was after is now deeply embedded in my brain. I have no qualms about deleting 6 hours of work if I don’t like it. That’s how you achieve stardom like me. Well, at least my dog seems to like my music.

Well I used to get about the same for a weekend in a 4 piece band in pubs back then. Then I went solo and more or less got what the whole band got. Bars didn’t seem to care how many people as long as you made noise that sold more beer. Only thing that has changed is instead of 4 sets I only play 2. But same money. I’ve made enough money this summer to build a new PC. Windows 11 here I come! It will be very cool to go right to Sonar 2023 on that shiny new machine. -
Yes, Audio snap was another feature I gave a hearty heave ho few years ago. I had spent ( waisted) hours and hours on and it all ended up being a huge mess. Pilot error no doubt, I watched the videos and kept returning to them but gave up as being either over my head or possibly a stupid design. I have two way better methods I will use for a track that has timing errors. 1- Melodyne- it's absolutely brilliant at moving notes around without artifacts. I only work in sort sections and render when done. Whiles its open you can also adjust amplitude and of course pitch. Three important ways to clean up a track. 2-Split the track at the note and drag it to the correct place. Turn off Snap to grid. When I'm done I tend to export the track as a stem at 48/32 and then bring it back to replace the messy looking track I created.

Ya, you beat me too it. And yes it's barley worth the bother. I played around with it and none of the functions are up to snuff. I was especially interested in the de-esser but for me it didn't remove sibilance. Melodyn does. It's back in the excluded bin.

Actually that old saying is questionable. Unless you have a very old and dangerous tank with a wooden lid, The grass will die over a certified modern tank because the soil heats up and it’s not very deep . The grass does sometimes stays green in the winter because of the heat generated. If the grass is green over the septic field you’ve got another issue. But it is a great old piece of folklore most likely from long ago when septic tanks were sort of funky. So please if you re build Sonar build it over a tank with a concrete or fibreglass lid. -

I started this thread because I find what Noel is saying as all good news for me I felt others would agree. I've held off on making any more tutorials about CbB because of the possible changes to the UI. In the first announcement it was not clear on the demise of CbB. Now it's clear, That's fine and probably in a year everyone will have totally forgotten about CbB and moved on. There will always be a tiny group of hold outs. There's a whole Face book page populated with Sonar Platinum holdouts called the Sonar user group, this will be hilarious because guess what will happen. They are asking questions like " Will the new Sonar be free for all us who paid Gibson a lot of money and got screwed over? " Do you feel that way? I don't because I just got 5 or more years worth of free updates. I totally see no issues with what is happening. And the early access is working 100% for me -
@Bristol_Jonesey I think were driving pour Will bonkers. So the wording throws me off but I think what you are saying is you are inserting an Split Instrument track for a Mono instrument and example would be the SI Bass. In the synth properties I found you can only choose Mono for split instruments, not Simple instruments. They are always stereo. But anyhow out of curiosity I inserted the SI bass as a mono source instrument, I pointed a midi track at the SI Bass track which shows the Mono interleave icon. I play the track and it is showing -6.5 db. I click the interleave and change it to stereo and it still shows -6.5 db. Then I froze the SI Bass track and the resulting Mono wave file now plays at -3.7 db. Interesting. So my only guess is even though the VST instrument track is set to mono it seems to still be actually playing as a stereo track to the output which internally then is summing to mono again. Which as we all are well aware of adds + 3db to the created mono audio track. So is this the issue you were trying to explain? That there's no such thing as a mono instrument track and the option to insert one is fake. I sort of think that this might just be universal to all DAW's

Gee, I had a gig yesterday so didn't see this until this morning. Thanks to all of you who think this was "Good News" to the rest of you , you really need to step back and look at what you are saying. Which boils down to " I don't like this software so I'm not buying" Fine I'm sure there are other free DAW's still out there like Audacity, go for it. -
