bitflipper 2,394 Posted February 20 Hearing loss is a topic that's come up here many times. Musicians, of course, are more prone to it than the general population. But so are audio engineers, who lose their high frequencies much faster than others (this I heard at a NAMM talk by a hearing specialist). Dave makes an interesting point here, which is that even though he has trouble understanding people talking, he still hears tiny details when mixing. This points out the difference between hearing acuity and critical listening skills. The longer you mix, the more dialed-in you become. I routinely identify flaws in commercial recordings that I've listened to for decades and thought were just fine. Kick beater squeaks, footsteps, traffic noise, people talking in the background - stuff I hear now because I've spent so many hours intently listening for such things. Even as my overall hearing continues to degrade.

Tim Smith 537 Posted February 24 Grohl made a movie about his recording experiences in what is basically a haunted house. He claimed things were moved, and guitars detuned from the night before when they would come back to record. There were tracks recorded they didn't make he claims. The funny thing is the band specifically picked this house because many other famous bands had recorded there. That the haunting aspect of it was already well known did not deter Grohl. The movie "Studio 666", while a hyped Hollywood teen centric special effects extravaganza, and an often a comedic take on their actual experiences, does not discount that actual events occurred in the house.
