Bad Mac 24 Posted January 6 I was a Sonar X3 user. been out of the game for a couple years. Now it looks like it is called Cakewalk by BandLab formerly known as Sonar. However Sonar Platinum is still for sale on the Cakewalk By BandLab website. so there is my confusion! Is Sonar still around and for sale? Is a newer version than X3 ? http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR
scook 2,728 Posted January 6 The link points to the old Cakewalk site. Cakewalk went out of business in 2017. None of their products are available for sale. In 2018 BandLab purchased Cakewalk IP from Gibson and released a free DAW called Cakewalk by BandLab (CbB) based on the SONAR Platinum code. The old site is running (courtesy of BandLab) to provide access to the current Cakewalk and old SONAR documentation, old forum. old knowledge base and customer accounts. The old Cakewalk activation servers are running too. The CbB website is https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk CbB installs as an upgrade to SONAR. It updates the "Shared" folders and adds new folders for the DAW. After installing CbB botk X3 and CbB will be available.
aidan o driscoll 431 Posted January 6 So keep your X3 installed alongside so as to have access to the extras that came with that at the time. CbB install then picks up all the extra instruments etc installed by X3. Leave X3 installed .. doesnt take up much room, you wont be using it, just there to give you access in CbB to the stuff you got with X3 that was not be licenced by or wasnt bought out by Bandlab in 2018. BUT you still own legit because you bought X3 at pre that time and have a right to use still
Bad Mac 24 Posted January 6 Thanks guys! I installed CbB. Got it all working. So what is the business model of CbB? How do they make money if the software is free?
bitman 89 Posted January 6 That's not a musician's concern. Rock on.

The owner believes the software should be free and has stated so on multiple occasions. Here is some info about BandLab Technologies and their businesses.
