My Son's Guitar Experiment

Recommended Posts

He removed the fretboard from the neck of this cheap Ibanez and put on a new un fretted fretboard, and he measured out and put frets in as 19 semitone per octave.

So how does this experiment sound?

It's just for looks man!  (Ok, color me curious too!)

Did he make it for Rain?  Those are definitely his colors.  😉

It looks good. I'm afraid it would give me too many opportunities to play wrong notes. Right now if I hit a bad one, I can always bend it a half step and make it right ;)

He says he's going to start working with it to see where it takes him.

Some here may recall my reporting here that my son made his first fretless guitar about a year or so before the Zappa Brothers album Shampoohorn where Dweezil played a fretless guitar on one tune.

Funny, for me it would be the perfect guitar. I can always blame the D**n Guitar for all the wrong notes I play 😆

So he didn't like it then?

19-tone equal temperament is definitely a thing. It's a way of experimenting with minor third intervals that are closer to perfect Pythagorean harmonic intervals than you get with 12-TET.

Other intervals are further "out" than 12-TET but it's all good stuff.

My son recorded his band's album in my studio. All the songs were played on the fretless guitar he built. I still have the tracks, transferred from ADATs to .wav files.
