  1. Yes, cost is amazingly high unless you can find a trustworthy source of second hand stuff and even then certain modules can command a high price.

If you want to stick to hardware then Behringer may be the best option, and something with a keyboard.

I wouldn't bother with their copies of more popular synths and look at stuff that is designed by them from scratch.

I'll see if I can come up with some suggestions.

  2. Hi Peeps :)

I hope you are all in good health and coping in the currently very strange and difficult times.

I wish I could say that I have been very musically productive over the last six to eight weeks but I have been having too much fun killing demons in the DOOM Eternal FPS game.

BUT, I managed to have a bit of a bash in the last week or so. Mainly Eurorack based.

For one project, however, I decided to power up some of my Spitfire Audio sample libraries to search for some inspiration.

One library, Alev Lenz - 3, is currently malfunctioning for some reason.

Certain presets do not play any sounds. And where it says Voices at the top of the VSTi GUI it reports 0 (zero) voices.

Presets that do not work are,

    Soul of Runner

    Don't sit down

    Moved your chair

    Stronger Together

    I know you will

Then preset Revolving Doors behaves rather strangely in that it plays voices in the lower register but as you go up the keyboard voices start to click and then you get no voices again.

I initially found this issue in REAPER but today I thought it would be good to dust off Cakewalk to see if the problem is the same, and I can confirm that that is the case, so, not a DAW issue.

I have tried both VST2 and VST3 version.

It would be great if anyone could confirm if their instance of Alev Lenz - 3 works okay.

    cheers, and thanks,

    andy :)

  3. I had Tooth #19 removed yesterday.

Too much chocolate I guess, and taking ten minutes to floss, scrape and brush my teeth clean, two or sometimes three times a day, wasn't enough to stem the rot.

And I couldn't be bothered with the more expensive options... It was a molar (first molar according to wikipedia) and therefore not that visible. Plus I'm sixty this year and I would rather spend the cash on a couple of VST things.

And  D O O M  Eternal, which is now in my Steam account and installed.

See you in around three months...

  4. I make exemplary Turds so I may have to give this tool a try myself.

I hasten to add that it doesn't matter how great your Turds are, they always benefit from a little bit of polish...

  5. I have to admit that I mostly faff around a lot.

What really helped was some of the tutorials on deviant art. But even so, I find it hard to get my head around some of it.

It is also well worth checking out the Larry Riddle stuff which I posted about above.

Some of my current chaos files use just the linear and julia transforms and I quite like the results. I'll post some examples tomorrow as I have gone to bed now.

    cheers

  6. So, where to start then?

I suppose a couple of stills would be nice first :)

Not sure how this will display here as it is a large picture that I uploaded to my deviantart account (which I don't use that much to be honest):-

    dct78df-4a8f5fc6-725b-4349-bdb5-55458640

That's a kind of random thing and was typical of what I created when I jumped in at the start.

After a while I tried to create stuff that is a bit more sort of geometric and not so random:-

    dctgabv-b38998ce-32e3-40b7-b4a2-02e4d3a7

    dctidm5-e6096b04-d61e-4d2b-8313-be1dfad2

The two above are not post-edited and the border effect was created within Chaotica.

There's more, of course, but I'll leave it there for now :D

    cheers

  7. I'm assuming that you would have been using something like Fractint, perhaps?

I've not used that program for some time.

And the stuff that I do are based on "flame fractals" which is totally different to the usual Mandlebrot stuff that Fractint created.

Not that I'm any kind of expert... The whole fractal thing blows my brain.

In an effort to try to understand the flame fractal stuff I sometimes reference the following:-

    http://larryriddle.agnesscott.org/ifs/ifs.htm

Some interesting stuff there but I struggle with the "math." End of.

However, with Chaotica, the software I use, I have created some fractals based on that website.

    This is a Heighway Dragon:-

    dragon.thumb.png.ac06268886d79a8b7861c2a6e8f951c9.png

    This is a McWorter's Pentigree:-

    Pentigree.thumb.png.f5bec46e400bddecedc5b58fbc33312e.png

    This is a Sierpinski Pentagon:-

    SierpinskiPentagon.thumb.png.6ecb4dcc7e1ed249ba49355e7f69d266.png

    And so on.

I created all the above within Chaotica by working through the examples from that website.

Chaotica then allows me to create more complex iterations and animate them. That is what I want to share, providing that enough people don't mind, including the moderators here, of course. After all, this is not at all about music and I can be accused, at the least, of posting off topic stuff.

And then there will be some that will flame me for "self promotion" of my music in a forum that is not for that kind of thing.

Hence why I have asked the question.

  8. Hi Peeps,

Would you mind if I shared some of my flame fractal creations here?

Sometimes it may be a still image but I ultimately aim to create animations.

The YouTube stuff will have my music attached, of course, but you can always mute that and play some heavy metal or R&B in the background. It's not about the music, more about the pretty graphics.

Any complaints and I will desist.

    cheers

  9. 7 hours ago, Toddskins said:

But I do have something new and I'm not the least concerned with stepping on others' toes.

I will watch out for your new stuff... Sounds interesting :)

My solution is, I rarely compose anything with a melody. So I should be okay providing someone doesn't copyright Middle C held for ten minutes 😁

  10. I got some right by guessing and some wrong that surprised me. I guess that is pretty much the same with all tests like this. Even professional sight and hearing tests, for instance.

If I thought it was a serious test I wouldn't have bothered...
