  1. I would like to amend my feature request for a chord track in Cakewalk.

Since there are powerful and reasonably priced composition and audio tools like Scaler 2 and Melodyne Essential 5x, I would submit that the primary base feature which provide the most bang for the buck would be the implementation of the Chord Track itself in Cakewalk.  Resembling the Arranger Track, the Chord Track would display the chord names and/or scale names at points along the project timeline.

At the very least, MIDI data in selected tracks would "snap" to the corresponding chords / scales and audio in selected tracks would be transposed based on the root note of the chords / scales.  If the "snapping" would be destructive, it would be desireable to be able to undo or reset to the original state.

One key to the successful implementation of the Cakewalk Chord Track would be the its ability  to at least import chord data from tools like Scaler 2 and Melodyne, so that composition and audio analyisis features need not be present in the initial version of the Chord Track.

A Scaler 2 feature I requested to enable auditioning of chords in the Circle of Fifths tool has been implemented in the latest update.

Also, in all editions of Melodyne 5, there is the ability to extract chords by analyzing audio.

By reducing the scope of the initial effort by the Bakers, I'm hoping that the odds of implementation are more realistic.

  2. How does SM compare with Vital?

Also, I haven't seen any demo of the SM arpeggiator in chord / sequence mode.  Can you trigger that with a single key?  What if you trigger it with multiple keys? Does it transpose chromatically or diatonically?  Inquiring minds...

EDIT:  I checked my copy of SM Play and found that there were patches in the SEQ category, with the word Poly in the name.  You can indeed trigger poly sequences with one key and they can be transposed chromatically.

    I shelled out for:

    Studio One 5.x

Mixcraft 9 (PC Only, I'm less likely to upgrade in the future for more than $40 as the last upgrade was $30)

Samplitude 5 (PC Only, I will probably not upgrade any more)

    Pro Tools 2020 Perpetual

    Digital Performer 10

    Cubase 11

    Reaper (the cheaper pricing)

    Mixbus/MIxbus 32C

    Reason

    Logic X (Mac only)

Would I shell out for CbB if it become paid for again? Not likely unless the re-entry cost was $99 or less and yearly version upgrades were $49. For what I use it for the locked down current version would be sufficient (just to create a tracking shell with markers for my CbB collaborators).

Most DAWs are overkill for me, but usually have a couple of features which are important to me.  If  CbB, Mixcraft or REAPER added a chord track, it's all I would need in combination with Scaler and Melodyne Editor (for chord dectection from poly audio).

    Tightest support = Studio One /Reaper/Mixbus/Mixbus 32C

OK Support = CbB, requires reset to SONAR/Cakewalk mode

Weak Support (flakey) = ProTools 2020, works most of the time, but requires reset of device occasionally when in required HUI mode.

I have not tried it in Cubase, Logic X, or Digital Performer yet. I won't even waste my time on Mixcraft 9 or Samplitude X5 as I never really use those.

I think there is one or two 😉

Hmm...  I can't think of any...

    LP - no chord track

    S1 - no clip launching

    CW - no chord track

LV - no notation editing, no chord track

    CB - no clip launching

PT - no chord track, no clip launching

RE - no chord track (native), no clip launching (native)

    MC - no chord track

    BW - no notation editing

SP - no chord track, no clip launching

FL - no chord track, no notation editing

  6. So I cross-graded to 10.0 in May of 2019, which I have not registered yet.  I'm thinking I'll wait until 11.5, because I don't want to have to wait until November, 2021 for 12.0.

I've been messing with REAPER, Mixcraft, Scaler and Melodyne.  Also played with the lockdown version of Cubase Elements 10.5.  Time to finally get on board with Cubase...

I skipped Upgrading to Studio One 4 and 5. I'm still on 3. I just signed up for Sphere tonight for a month so in my eyes I just saved $285 plus whatever the cost is of everything else I just got access to. And when I'm done using my DAW in a couple months, I'll cancel and start it up again some time. If I get a wild hair in the meantime, I'll keep using Studio One 3. No matter what I'll still keep using CbB too. I really like it. More than Studio One in a lot of ways.

Be careful - I read somewhere that Studio One version 4 / 5 projects can not be loaded into version 3x or lower.

Unfortunately it looks like Audio to MIDI begins with the Assistant version according to this MELODYNE VERSIONS

That version comparison may be inaccurate.  I know for sure I was able to convert audio to MIDI in Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio once I upgraded the included Melodyne Essential to version 5.  I have since upgraded to Editor version 5 - Editor and Studio should both be able to convert polyphonic audio to MIDI.

  9. No company wants to write notation functionality from scratch - the logical and fashionable thing to do is buy or incorporate existing product functionality -

    • Studio One (Notion)
    • Pro Tools (Sibelious)
    • Cubase (Dorico) - ok, they built their own, but they later assembled former Sibelius folks and built Dorico, but Cubase 11 implemented some Dorico funtionality
    • Sonar (Gibson passed on the opportunity to have Overture functionality)

The exceptions are Emagic Notator (Logic) and REAPER (who decided to roll up their sleeve and just write a pretty decent score editor).

Calkwalk's Staff Editor is decent for MIDI composing and editing (see JSG's work).  However, there may be a missed opportunity to be the de facto standard academic Windows music environment by not including improved notation functionality (if anyone feels that's important).

  10. I found this on the Toontrack site -

WHAT IS EZDRUMMER® LITE & HOW DO I GET IT?

EZdrummer Lite is discontinued and is no longer available (as of May 6th, 2014)

    What is EZdrummer® Lite?

    Is EZdrummer® LITE for free?

Well, technically yes, but you would still require a serial number to gain access to the product and authorize it. EZdrummer® Lite is only available when bundled with third party hardware, magazines and other software products.

  11. I saw this the other day - I think I've watched it about 15 times since.  I makes me smile to see them having a great time.

Funniest moment for me is John and Paul singing "Two of Us" with their teeth clenched.

Peter Jackson's team performed a miracle - it looks like it was recorded with Ringo's iPhone last week.

August 2021 can't come soon enough.  I find it incredible that there is such rabid interest after 51 years.

  12. The thing which impressed me with the free SSD 5.5 is the sound and the nuanced playing in the limited number of MIDI grooves.

Are the EZ Drummer Drum MIDI expansions just plain MIDI and with the proper mapping could they be used in SSD?

Also, in your opinions, comparing SSD 5.5 @ $59 and EZ Drummer @ $79, which would is your preference for sound, ease of use for assembling human sounding drum parts and importing/mapping 3rd party grooves?

  13. What is typically the lowest price for EZ Drummer?  I have the free Steven Slate Drummer 5.5 and I am tempted to get the full version for $59, but then I heard that EZ Drummer has a feature where you can tap in a beat, and it will search its grooves for matches.  This would be cool.

I'm really impressed with the sound of the free SSD 5.5 and the few grooves that it has.  How does EZ Drummer compare with regard to styles and number of grooves?  It does look like a bit of a money pit to buy all the style expansions.
