In the meantime though, for your particular scenario, where you've got chords underneath the main sections you could try the following:

    That's really clever.

Not trying to be funny, but seriously, could this construct be used as the visual basis of a Cakewalk chord track?

"So once Cakewalk was no longer a Cakewalk for the songwriter to use, DAWs such as Studio One came up and thats where they really excel at doing."

While I don't disagree that SO has features which songwriters would appreciate, I'm curious about which songwriting features Cakewalk lost.

There are excellent "music assistant" programs like Scaler or even Band in a Box which come in VST format that make it really easy to integrate with DAWs like Cakewalk.  - though it would be great if Cakewalk had a chordtrack.. 😁

This gets so much love and development it’s hard to keep up. I find if I’ve not used it for a while, I need to invest some time and go back to basics, then learn the new stuff. The support via video tutorials is also second to none. Really excellent plugin.

Exactly.  I haven't kept up either.

From a brief viewing of the video, it appears that you can key lock to the chords.  I wonder if you can also lock to scales?  This is very similar to Cubase's MIDI input transform.

Scaler can make any DAW a powerful composition tool.

  4. Audio to MIDI Public Service Announcement (sorry, doesn't belong in this thread, but I figured those interested in Melodyne are probably subscribed to this)

Melodyne 5 Assistant allows you to convert audio to MIDI (including polyphonic audio).

HOWEVER, you cannot EDIT polyphonic audio with Assistant.  Editor or Studio are required for this.

Had I known this, I may not have been so quick to upgrade from Essential to Editor.

For the last four years I've been working in a modified version of the now defunct report writing language. Our company acquired a license to use it as a baseline and move it forward for our needs.  It's also imbedded into a fork of a licensed obsolete version of a popular frontend tool, as the backend database engine, as our UI.

Prior to that I worked for almost 5 years in PHP/MySQL in WAMP.

Prior to that was about 10 years in Oracle Forms & Reports (which is built on a foundation of PL/SQL).

In the way back was Cobol (12 years) and before that  Basic on the HP-3000 (4 years) and prior to that Fortran (7 years).

There were a few one-off side jaunts to Access and dBase III.

For me, since 1981, COBOL, UFO, ADS/O, PowerBuilder, Peoplesoft.  As a DBA, IDMS, Oracle, E-business Suite, SQL Server.   All with 2 years of tech school.  😄

Hey Larry, is there a connection between your departure and my sudden and inexplicable episode of GAS?
Please hurry back before I go broke.

Oh no, I hope no one was injured.

So when is a free Windows OS upgrade announcement not a deal?

You have to consider the total cost of ownership - including labor.  🙂

  9. I'm love the remixes and the demos, especially the Abbey Road package - and I'm a mega Beatles fan.

I know what you mean by the instruments being too discrete - sometimes stacked or smeared sounds of the originals are cool because they blur the boundaries of where one thing ends and another begins.

Having said that, I rarely go back to the originals.  I just really like clarity.  I listen on headphones 97% of the time.

Yes, the bass could be evened out on AR, but having better drums and a nice stereo spread is worth it for me.

I occasionally used audio to midi conversion within SONAR, too.  I was later led to believe by things I read that what seemed to me to be SONAR conversion actually used Melodyne (which used to be bundled with SONAR).  I know I used to be able to do polyphonic conversions without any clue that it involved Melodyne.  But a year or so ago, the polyphonic conversion disappeared. Not sure if that was because I updated from Essentials 2 (or whatever version came bundled with SONAR) to whatever version of Essential I now have.

I suppose if there are no satisfactory alternatives and polyphonic conversion is a must-have feature, the cost of Melodyne Editor would be worth the expense.

@pbognar Was/Is the conversion in Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio with Essential 5 polyphonic?

In order to perform polyphonic audio to MIDI conversion in Mixcraft 9, you need to have Melodyne 5 Editor or Studio installed.  It is the same for Cakewalk.

Problem though might be getting the 4 track recordings off them? Would they need the portastudio to do that, not just a normal tape deck?

I still have my Tascam Porta-studio 244 - the tape operates at 2x normal, for increased fidelity.

It looks like the restriction is still in place in CbB, but the program no longer crashes - it just closes the staff view and won't let you open it again while that time signature exists in your meter map.

The message is a bit misleading - it has actually reached its limit in this case. The staff view can only cope with bars that are less than 128 1/32 notes in length (i.e. the limit is 127 1/32 notes, which is what I'm seeing in the code ). The Staff View code is very old, so the limitation is probably due to the size of the variable it's using to store what notes are where within a bar.  So bars of 128 1/32 notes or more are too long.

As far as a patch for SONAR 2.2 is concerned, SONAR 2.2 was the patch for SONAR 2.0.  It was released over 18 years ago, and is no longer supported.

It's pretty cool that you are looking at the staff view code and can actually decipher it.  🙂
