  1. I got a new digital thermometer as the last three analog ones were reading incorrectly and went in the round file. I open the box and along with the thermometer they included a pick.

same thing happened at the end of last month. I bought a new tool kit to open my Mac to do the annual cleaning of the fans. And I open the kit up and O got a new pick in the deal.

just how these vendors know that I play guitar is just beyond me. They must surely be watching me through the inter web.

why didn’t my new guitar come with a pick when I bought it? Really, these retailers need to get with the program.

on a more serious note, I just find it humorous that picks are a ubiquitous item to include for opening those slotted doors on electronics. Something I had been doing for an awfully long time.

TIL this fun fact: the most iconic bass line in history - talking about the Seinfeld theme, of course - was not played on a bass.

It was a keyboard. Yeh, and the guy who played it was probably the un-coolest nerd in the band. The one with a "Math is Cool" t-shirt who plays D&D on Thursdays and knows for a fact which one was the best Star Trek captain. Take that, you cool bassists with your dark glasses and your motorcycle boots and, and, and your girlfriends.

What no gratuitous image of a beautiful woman?

I need to keep the nails of my left hand filed short for guitar fretting duties.  But I like to pick my nose with my left little finger, so I need a nail on it.

How do I reconcile these requirements?

Well you could try attaching said penny nail with a hammer…..

Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but everybody here has got at least one of those. 😉

True… in the 80’s I got hired into a band signed by MCA to replace the guitarist who was ousted as a condition of signing. Apparently, the previous guitarist didn’t have the requisite hair metal look. Recorded a few songs to complete the album and then nothing. Marketing spent no time on preparing a release. Didn’t even make it to pressing vinyl.  That’s how I learned it was the “music business” and not an art form. Upside, is I got an amp out of the deal.

One of the blessings of making aftermarket fake e-disks for Band-in-a-Box is discovering new songs.

Working on one of the Real Jazz books, I came across a song called Ragtime Cowboy Joe. It's in a jazz book, but it's actually Western Swing, which was a mixture of country and jazz genres. I don't listen to Western Swing much, but should listen to it more. Here is a contemporary band doing it. The musicianship is excellent, there is an element of fun, and I liked it, so I'm sharing.

Ragtime Cowboy Joe - The Swing Commanders

My grandmother Irene Hollingsworth used to play at the Redondo Barn. A country swing venue in Redondo Beach, California, back in the 40’s and 50’s. I’ve got the guitar she had used at the time. Family legend has it that it was given to her by Tex Williams. I’m not sure how accurate that was as the owner of the Redondo Barn went by Texas Jim Lewis. But my Dad swore it was Tex Williams.

I was a Panasonic guy myself but got forced in to Canon and Ricoh when I moved from NJ to IA. Panasonic made the best copiers imo. But they knew it and charged more and wouldn't budge when the price wars came. The bean counters in offices didn't care about how well they ran or how great the color copies and prints were. The bean counters just looked at the bottom line and that drove Panasonic out of business. Anything Panasonic is superior to almost everything else but you do pay more. What I like about them is their parts department is the same for end user as service centers. They will sell any part for any of their products to anyone to repair it themselves. I don't know of anyone else who does that.

I worked on office equipment over 20 years. Took a job as a manager, the economy tanked, the business closed, I couldn't get back in to the industry, the wife lost her job in IA, found her dream job in MO, I couldn't find a job here because the economy was still dead, been out of the workforce so long now nobody will even talk to me, plus my age. So I'm stuck just waiting for the tall dark boney dude with the scythe to come a' callin'.

Explains the copier references. I spent 8 years on the technical side of xerox high volume business then crossed over to color printing  system sales. Then software sales. Ended up a casualty of the Great Recession.

Physical issues cropped up soon after. Kinda put an end to working a regular job. Plus the age thing. Companies don’t like to invest in folks who have gotten beyond 50 these days.

So now it’s back to the passion of music. Not that I make any money at it. But it passes the time.
