  1. 6.2.4 runs fine in CbB!! When I try to open Hammersmith it says the instrument belongs to a library that is not installed!! Yet the Hammersmith shows up and plays in the standalone  version of 6.2.4. I can open Hammersmith by either using the banner in Kontakt or clicking on the .nki file in the Hammersmith folder. No problems there in the standalone at all. Only when I open the vsti in any of my DAWs, Hammersmith is not listed and if I try by opening the .nki file in Kontakts browser do I get the alert that the library is not installed.

All the other libraries show up and play fine in the standalone and in the vst in CbB.

  2. I also use a pair of Studio-Captures!!! I have not had any noise issues to speak of but the phantom power section started causing them to not boot up. A repair tech in Atlanta found that disconnecting the ribbon cable would fix the problem but I have to use outboard phantom power supplies!! A minor nuisance at best.

Anyway, the repair person said they were still serviceable but you probably have to ship the unit thru a roland licensed repair shop. Everyone has to make their money.

I have intended to contact Roland to see if I could just ship straight to them but I was advised that Roland does not do its own repair work. You could give it a shot!!!!!

As far as noise I would try turning down all channels and disable compression and check each channel before anything else. Maybe you can track down a specific channel problem.

  3. My favorite setup is to mic the amp but the only stomps in front of the preamp are boost or overdrive pedals and a good volume pedal. I only want to record the amp sound with the tone shaping boxes.

Any fx such as delays, chorusing, reverbs, harmonizes, etc. are added in the DAW!!!! I have never been a fan of putting those types of fx through the amp where you are stripping the pristine top end and introducing distortion into the sound.

I see many players now reflecting this in their live rigs where the guitar rig is an amp miced into a mixer with a set of stereo pa cabs on either side of the amp. The delays, reverbs, etc, are used in the fx sends of the mixer giving you total control of the dry tweaked amp and your fx mixed in the stereo cabs!!

This is the approach I take when cutting tracks in a studio, tape or DAW.

If I need the extra versatility, I just use Amplitube!!!

  4. Rematrix Solo is the convo verb in Prochannel. I have had stellar results with it. So.much so, I reach for it much more than the full Overloud verb included in Cake.

There is a very nice free version of ReMatrix that includes the presets from Solo. A lot more control over the IRs than Solo.

  5. There are some really nice freebies out there!! Search on Dragonfly reverbs and there is a pack of 4 different styles of reverbs in the download. Orilriver is another great freebie. These two come to mind.

Since you work with Perfect Space you are probably at ease working with IRs. One of my favorite affordable reverbs is Melda Productions!

There is a free version in the free pack of plugins that is wonderful because it allows you to use any of your own IRs! I had a huge library of IRs from using Perfect Space myself for many years and they all load and work perfectly in Melda. Once you try it, there is a pay version with more controls available. Either way, the freebie or the pay version, the Melda Productions reverbs are a keeper!

  6. We do have surviving original scores written in the composers hands to refer to and in those days the composer had the last say as to whether the published piece would be released.

My comments were not meant to offend anyone or start a debate about which workflow you use. It was only to bring attention to the fact that even now notation is as important as it always has been as far as a means of communication for musicians, both amateur and professional!! Why Cake persists in not really either upgrading or at least admitting they don't intend to ever fix notation is perplexing!

I will continue to use Cake as I have since late 80s or early 90s and fully support it but the notation has always been almost unusable for any serious task!!!

  7. If you search the old Cakewalk forum you'll find a thread in there that I started a few years back about fixing notation that may have set the record for the number of responses. I think the last time I checked it was 300 pages or more.

That was years ago and very little has been done to upgrade notation in Cake. I still have hope that they will.

Bottom line!! If it were not for notation, think of all the wonderful music from the past hundreds of years we would not have. Would you really trust the process of someone learning every single part of a symphony by ear and then passing it down to a younger musician to carry on to the next generation? I think the odds would be pretty high that parts would be lost or or at least wrong. And what about dynamics. If not for notation we would have no idea about the emotional performance of a piece! Even a slammin'  hip hop song has breakdowns!!

Finally, notation is the earliest form of direct communication for a composer to communicate his interpretation of a piece. I think we are very fortunate to have any system that allows me to pick up a piece of paper and see EXACTLY the way Beethoven intended for this music to be performed.

This system is responsible for laying the groundrules  of all the music you play by ear now!!! We should respect this communication tool enough to keep it alive another 1000 years.

As far as this thread is concerned, I feel that it is beating a long dead horse. If you care about notation that much, buy a notation program that fits your budget and move on!!

  8. I got xt with my samplitude 5 suite upgrade. It is very good if you like variety and vintage reverb box sounds. The drawback for me is it seems very cpu intensive.

Some of the presets cause clicks and dropouts for me but I use a large number of vst instruments in my projects. If you're just doing audio tracks mostly, you should be good. The magix plugins are very good as well. Definitely worth having in the toolbox!!!
