  1. Well I found I had a 20% discount coupon in my account. This is a nice synth for the money, probably not essential if you have some other 80's polysynth emulations but nice to have.  They have a larger version, the SynX 2 which goes for 169 Euros.

I am not sure which of the SIEL synth it emulates, I think it my be hybrid of a few models. I used to have a DK600 and this is more capable that that beast!

P.S. Disappointingly unlike XILS 4 its not NKS compatible, but on the plus side its a simple serial number activation.

  2. Thanks, I will try the battery replacement first and if it still does not work I will decide what to do. I am not sure it worth spending a lot of money on when I have so many soft synth options that are a lot more versatile. But it would be nice to have a hardware synth working again.

I bought mine second hand back in the 90's

  3. I recovered my 1983 vintage Korg Poly-800 from storage to find it had lost its memory. I suspect its just the backup battery for the RAM and I found this video on replacing it.

It looks neigh on impossible without a battery mount, which only cost a couple of pounds plus P&P so i have ordered on and I am going to give it a go. Wish me luck!

It was a bit of a pig to program be honest but it sounded pretty good for what it was. The architecture is limiting as all voiced share the same filter, this demands a different playing technique.

I would be nice to have it working again but its hardly a classic (hence no VSTi versions)

  4. Is anyone else finding the keyswitches a bit erratic. I am trying to program slides on some notes.  I can sometimes get it to work, but other times when I playback exactly the same MIDI the slides do not trigger.

I think a long hard read of the instructions may be needed to get my head around how keyswitches work and how they are affected by velocity but I cant see why playing the same data gets differing results.

They definitely wanted to beat the OTS Jaco update.   As per Greg at OTS:

At the moment I have both Evolution Jaco (Iconic Bass Jaco) and Evolution Rick Bass working in the Evolution bass engine, but there's still more work to do, specifically with adding the fretless capabilities for the Jaco bass, which will also pave the way for updating CoreBass Pear. My current plan with Cherry Electric Bass is to resample the original bass for separate strings and individual pickup signals so that it's on the same page with what we're doing with the current Evolution basses.

Right now I'm trying to finish a
couple other libraries we're working on right now before working more on those updates, though. We have one really large project in particular that I need to finish before trying to work on more things at the same time. It's been in development since 2015 and has around 80,000 samples...

So the new OTS Jaco is going to be great.  The Ample one is here today, but the OTS may be in next year's Group Buy.

    Good to know, thanks.

  6. The price drops to $80 when I log in, probably because I have a number of other products.

I am tempted, I have Orange Tree's Jaco which is very nice but a little dated now in terms of features, I have been hoping Greg gives it the full "Evolution" treatment.

  7. Even cheaper than when I bought it last month from Audio Plugin Deals. It's a very nice synth for the money.

  8. Probably the best Mellotron emulation out there.

I do like the Hollowsun Newtron Bomb 2 which I think is now only available as part of their "prog pack" for its raw, un-enhanced sound but it has nowhere near the amount of tape banks on M-Tron pro. Then of course there are the expansions. (money pit warning!)

  9. Well, not much I don't have so I have joined the club with Grand Kalimba which I nearly bought last time around, it sounds nice in the demos.

The new Evolution Flatwound and Roundwound basses I well worth a look if you don't already have them!

  10. NI's Blocks for Reaktor is very versatile and has "de-nerdified" Reaktor to some extent. Massive X looks a bit like a Reaktor ensemble and I see some "blocks" modules in there like the Monark filter.  Maybe there will be some synergy between these products, it certainly has an unfinished feel to it.

A interesting thing when browsing in Komplete Kontrol is one can filter on certain parameters and scroll through the available sounds irrespective of the synth.  For example one can look for all synth pads that are classified as airy, processed and slow attack. The sound preview give an idea of the patch before loading the synth. Its a great way of comparing the different synths, at least as far as presets are concerned.

Of course only NKS compatible synths can be browsed in this way but Arturia, AAS, Softube, Waves and XILS are all NKS too as well as EastWest and a great mant Kontakt libraries.

  11. Acacab,

I love Codex, its one of my favorite synths. but the other two go beyond wave table so they are more versatile at the expense of greater complexity.

  12. Downloaded and installed. I have just been auditioning some of the presets, I really love my S61 NI keyboard for this, just scrolling through direct from the keyboard and seeing what comes up.

    First impressions.

    • It sounds more digital the Massive to my ears.
    • There seems to be a high proportion of effects type presets and "way out" and heavily modulated sounds over the generally usable type of sound in the factory presets.
    • There are some very nice pads and a couple I have already flagged as "favourite" for future exploration.
