  1. NI changed the licensing for KONTAKT Player several years ago and they did reduce the costs for a developer to release free Player instruments (I can't recall the specifics,  but I'm pretty sure NI negotiates prices with developers anyhow). Their revenue model employs a cut of the sales for instruments that use the Player, so if a developer decides to dramatically reduce the list price of a library,  they'll want to renegotiate with NI.

    Except maybe these two packs...

    The BFD website states:

Crafted from the acclaimed BFD Jazz Noir expansion pack, this pack unveils a distinctive essence – introducing the timeless allure of vintage jazz.

I am not saying they are reduced versions, just that it appears that they are not newly recorded.

Ah, if they  were made since that thread, then that would make sense. Drew was just referring to what was released at the time, which I believe was only two expansion kits. But Drew had stated that the libraries made for BFD Player had more detail than the ones created for BFD3 more than a decade ago.

EDIT: I just went to the site and saw that InMusic has been repurposing the old BFD3 kits to make BFD Expansion Packs. FTR, I'm not sure how they're getting around things like the BFD3 kits not having round robins (I realize they use programming to grab different velocity hits in BFD3 -- perhaps that's what they're doing with the Player too; I thought Drew had stated that BFD Player used round robins). I really like the demo for BFD3 Jazz Noir a lot, but the demos for the BFD Player Expansion Jazz Sticks expansion didn't sound anything like the demos for Jazz Noir and frankly, I was very turned off by the demos. I'd be interested in hearing the raw Expansion kit raw.

@Drew Vernon If this is the same kit as featured on the Jazz Noir page?

my understanding is they are "reduced" versions of existing BFD3 expansions for the budget PLAYER, specifically the Jazz Noir expansion for these.

Drew, a developer who works on the BFD team for InMusic, explained on this forum several months ago that the libraries for BFD Player are newly recorded and not compatible with BFD3. So, they're new and different, and not reduced versions. Drew had also shared that the new BFD Player libraries have more detail than the BFD3 libraries, which were recorded more than a decade ago.

Speaking of which, I highly recommend this Platinum Samples Brush Kit library.

I was just listening on my phone and I love the tone on those drums. Session Drummer? Isn't that the plugin from Cakewalk? I remember Platinum Samples making libraries for BFD 3. I didn't get them because I don't have BFD 3, but the demos sounded excellent and they were made by some legends. I'm intrigued.

  5. It's cheap enough,  but I find this entire line disappointing. And I really like Drew, one of the developers, who's posted here and on the BFD forum.  He seems like a sincerely nice person. For those who can't afford paid options, I think BFD Player is worth picking up. But the drums aren't even close to the quality of ezDrummer, AD2, or NI's various acoustic drum kit libraries. It just seems like InMusic didn't allocate the appropriate resources make this product competitive.

That said, at $12.59, there aren't a lot of  alternatives. My hope is that they improve this line.

They fired their most visionary co-founder for refusing to cave to the woke mob...

This isn't the place to voice political / anti LGBTQ views.

Also,  you got the whole thing wrong. Henson has a child who is transgender and tweeted a myth that re assignment surgery is happening to young children. That's factually untrue.  The term "woke"  is a long time African-American slang term referring to people being aware and empathetic to the injustices of others. A mob never formed against Henson. Leaders in the LGBTQ community asked for a discussion.  Henson refused and quit. Spitfire has LGBTQ employees and that was clearly an issue.

There's no woke mob. Leave your politics and intolerance off this forum, please. There are forum members of all races, ethnicities, nationalities, political views, genders and sexual orientations and all deserve to be treated with respect, not intolerance.  You might not like people who are different from you, but you don't have the right to make this forum hostile to those people.

  8. Welcome back, Larry! We missed you, of course, but it's far more important -- and good to know -- that you're enjoying life! Looking forward to the pix and the stories.

It's funny that I keep adding the free waves plugins to my account but I will not install anything related to Waves in my PC. I get them to satisfy my G.A.S. even though I will never use them! 😆

I'm very confident that you're not alone. It's pretty clear from posts that a great deal of us hoard plugins and sample libraries,  especially when they're free.

    PavlovsCat,

I swore off Waves plugins because of the WUP, but since it's FREE, I will let this one go.  Remember,  just this one time only, don't make it a habit.   😁

I generally avoid Waves for the same reason. But I do love their Abbey Road plugins and I'll absolutely take another free plugin (I already have this one,  since it just means a newer plugin with no need for WUP). But I've never had a Waves plugin stop working on me to date, so, I've never had to buy WUP.

I didn't bother to see what this plugin does, but... I GOT IN!!! Yes!

Come on, what kind of self respecting hoarders would we be if we took the time to figure out what a FREE limited time plug does before we download it???

No way. Download, then figure out what it does!!!! There are only 200 licenses. Wait. We've become the equivalent of Pavlov's Dog but instead  of a belll, we're triggered by the word "Free!" and especially when it's followed by "limited time" and/or "quantity. All these devs have our number. They have my number and I'm supposedly an expert marketer and understand how the formula works (it doesn't stop me from succumbing to it).

  12. I only have Sky Box's 145B Wurli library and it's superb (I bought it on the recommendations of two forum members). Based upon the quality -- and creativity of the snapshots-- of that library, I agree with Craig and Fleer that this is an excellent developer.  If I wasn't watching my budget and have a bunch of pianos,  I'd likely get this. The demos sound excellent and that's a great price for this level of quality.

  13. Splash Sound, a KONTAKT sample developer, has released a plugin featuring a djembe sample library (not in the KONTAKT format, but available in their own plugin) simply called Djembe, and it's free.

    From the developer:
For recording we used a 10-inch handmade mahogany djembe with a genuine leather membrane

We recorded 3 microphone positions to maximum sound flexibility: The main condenser microphone capturing the vibrant membrane sounds, a dynamic microphone positioned opposite from the djembe's resonator for depth, and condenser stereo pair for recording room's acoustics

Each of the articulations (Bass tone, Open tone, Slap tone, Flam, Mute and Roll) is recorded in 4 levels of velocity and 5 layers of round robin.

    GENERAL INFO:

    Version: 2.0.1
    Released: April 9, 2024
Made for: Windows 7 or newer / MacOS 10.14 or newer
Plugin Formats: VST3, AU, Standalone App

    FEATURES:

6 types of articulations: Bass tone, Open tone, Slap tone, Flam, Mute and Roll
    Velocity: 4 layers
    Round Robin 5 layers

  14. Lots of speculation why Behringer pulled this and if it's temporary or permanent. (I wasn't able to pick it up before it was taken down and thought I'd share a video of someone walking through the synth's presets).

The developer behind Tone2 is publicly sharing concerns that Behringer has infringed upon his intellectual property rights. Some are wondering if that has anything to do with the synth suddenly being pulled with no statement from the company.

Like I said. Neither do I.

So my guess is that their email targeting got some things wrong. It's not rare with small retailers. They're mostly using Shopify and connect it up to some email marketing SaaS, and this stuff can be tricky, so there's a fairly decent probability of user error. Hence, when some people on the email list who don't actually own a library get sent an email with an upgrade offer for something they don't own and others who don't own the library don't get that same email.  Email lists are very highly personalized these days with tons of criteria that determines what an email subscriber sees. If the person administrating the software gets something a little off, you can wind up getting offers that weren't intended for you based on your buying behavior.

  16. I admit, while I've given SoundPaint advice and am friends with their CEO, I want to buy Alien drum and searched my email for that deal -- which I am guessing would be expired by now. But I didn't get it and I'm on the 8Dio and SoundPaint email lists.  I already own a few detailed hang drum libraries (including SonicCoture's), but I'm in love with the sound of the hang drum and this library sounds gorgeous -- plus I've really gotten deeper into programming SoundPaint than any other sampler.

But I suppose I didn't get this email because I don't own the KONTAKT version of Alien Drum.

Im 100% in And super idea make IT here ;))

We could always do a Reddit or, if enough people are interested,  I've always contemplated starting a forum that was much like this one, but where developers were more involved and users could get their attention to have a good channel of feedback,  but without the kind of developer-centric, money driven approach of VI-CONTROL, the inherent bias of having a developer against competitors and with strong policy and enforcement against shilling, bullying, trolling, political, and discriminatory posts.

I've ran several forums over the decades, but they were all tied to business. I am here out of my love for music, so I'd love to do it. I've talked to several developers over the years who said they'd participate if I did it. The greatest challenge would be building the traffic, the users. I know I'd want cclarry there -- Larry is what made this sub forum what it is. Anyhow, it would be a hobby project for me. But considering that digital has been my living since the 90s, I think I can create something better for musicians than what exists.  But I'll only do it if a bunch of people are on board, and we'll need moderators too.

  18. These posts make me wish the forum added a section where we could trade vsts and sample libraries.  A lot of us here buy a lot of stuff, and find out some of it isn't a fit for us, but someone else may love it. If anyone knows how to make that happen, I think it'd be a great feature.

Cool! Perhaps my reservations are unwarranted then. Assuming, of course, that promise exists somewhere in writing.

Those promises mean little if they file bankruptcy (a chapt 11 or a 7).  But let's say they go under and hold to that promise, then you have a bunch of sample libraries in a proprietary format that work until your OS or DAW has an update that causes a conflict, then you're out of luck. At least KONTAKT has a pretty stable company behind it. If they had a similar offer for libraries in the KONTAKT format,  that had less features than their regular KONTAKT versions as is the case with Musio  -- I would have grabbed that in a heartbeat, of course.
