I have so many good plug-ins that I can adopt a policy where if a plug-in can't run well on my i7 6700 system, it's not the computer that's going to get replaced.

I don't know if it's that I'm good at winnowing or what, but my i7 3770 system is adequate to the task of being my main DAW, and was so up until a couple of months ago. When I audition plug-ins, I look carefully at their performance, how well they use resources. The ones that use too much processing power don't make the team.

My philosophy is that the generation of hardware and software should match up, within reason. Expecting the latest software to perform on hardware that is a few generations behind is unrealistic IMO.

It's fine if you want to keep running hardware for years, as I do. I hate to put systems that still run well out to pasture, but it is what it is...

Using software designed for that specific hardware generation is a much better experience! Future proofing your computer from years ago only carries so far into the future!

It's like an arms race, as I'm sure that developers are using the latest hardware available to do things that were never before possible on older hardware, and are trying to be first to market. It may not seem fair, but their primary business objectives are likely not to be backwards compatible with older hardware when they are pushing the bleeding edge of new capability (read as CPU hogs).

I really hope Cakewalk development team take in serious consideration reviewind the External Insert plugin to work as it should

I'm sure that the Cakewalk devs are doing the best they can with the resources that they have. The number of additions and fixes they have produced in the last 4+ years is nothing short of amazing. I would never even think of using Sonar Producer again, and I was a paying Sonar Platinum Lifetime user.

It's been a long road for them I'm sure, but the program is much better now than it ever was!

If you have suggestions for Cakewalk improvements, suggest that you drop them in the Feedback Loop forum where they are more likely to be seen by development staff:

    https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/forum/8-feedback-loop/

"Provide feedback on features, ideas and requests for future releases of Cakewalk by BandLab."

  3. I don't know the answer to that question on a purchase/upgrade grace period, but I will add that I seriously doubt that Kontakt 7 will go on sale THIS black Friday. Maybe next year...

I bought into Kontakt 6 during a 50% off sale, and used a crossgrade from a licensed 3rd party Kontakt Player library to nab it for $124.

Once I hit 40, my eyesight fell off a cliff.  Kontakt on my new widescreen monitor looks like a postage stamp. I need a jeweler's loop to read it.  If I could get by with the free version of Kontakt 7 I would, but I've got multiple libraries that need the full version

I'm in the same boat, but I think the HiDPI browser is just that. The browser. I will assume that the rest of the song remains the same, until someone shows me otherwise!

Does this plugin work on your Cakewalk version?

That's the question you should have been asking from the beginning. 😉

I don't know, because I don't have that plugin. My 37+ Waves plugins all work fine here in the latest Cakewalk version, but I believe I had to clean install my Waves setup a few years ago when it got glitchy. I don't recall the details, but I am of the opinion that Waves way over complicates things that should be simpler.

If you go back and read what Waves support sent you, they included this statement: "Make sure to load WLM (and any other Waves plugin) as VST3, which is the only format tested and qualified with our plugins in Cakewalk."

I have 18 other Waves Audio plugins in my DAW and they ALL work Fine!

That really doesn't make them all the same. Just one little bit affecting that plugin in your environment could be corrupted, making it YOUR problem only, and if so you are the only person that can fix it.

These suggestions, or hoops as you call them, are the only way to logically rule things out at your end. If you want Waves support (or anyone for that matter) to work with you, you WILL need to do as they ask! :)

We are just users like you, and have been in your shoes before...

I understand that the (paid for) Unify VST will allow you to combine instances of Discover but as I have not got this others would be better placed to advise

Correct, but Unify is still not multi-out (yet). You can layer as many instruments inside Unify as you wish, but they all get mixed to one stereo audio output.

As far as the Spitfire Player goes, set up as many instrument tracks as you need (with one VST instrument instance on each), and then save it as a CbB template so you only have to do that once. Each instrument track will have one stereo audio output appearing in the console, available for flexible mixing setups.

I hope they don't expect me to "Always" be up to date with Microsoft Windows updates.... cause the latest updates have caused massive problems with other computers.  Currently the latest update does this "Windows 10 KB5017308 causing issues with Group Policy settings".  Why would I want to install bugs?

EDIT: I'll be up to date, only after the Windows update doesn't have any issues for 90 days.

You are probably OK to skip the latest Windows updates, but do be thorough about updating the Windows Redistributables. The redistributables always contains code that Windows applications (and plugins) are dependent on to run correctly. I have heard of other problems being fixed by updating them. That can't hurt in any case.

And a clean refresh of Waves can't hurt either, but may very well help. I have also heard that this fixed other plugin issues with Waves that some have had.

I would focus on those two things, and see how it goes!

I may be wrong, but AFAIK the Free U-He Plugin is just available, if you upgrade to Bitwig STUDIO. - The big toy...

Aha! OK, I saw this and assumed the free plugin was for any version, apparently that's just for the 25% off deal:

"From September 22nd until September 29th, existing u-he customers can claim a 25% discount coupon applicable to Bitwig Studio, Bitwig Studio EDU, Upgrade From 16-Track, and Upgrade From 8-Track."

Don't really need another DAW... so nevermind the BIG toy, LOL!!! :)

  10. I've got Bitwig 8-Track. The 2 VST limit is a bit annoying...

Was thinking about upgrading it to 16-Track, and getting u-he Bazille for free (normally 129 €). Already have Bazille CM, and quite like it!

With the u-he/Bitwig 25% discount, it looks like that upgrade to 16-Track  would be $75. Not a bad price for Bazille, with a less crippled version of Bitwig tossed in! :)

What about Cakewalk Bandlab's strategy? What money's even being made there? Different thread/topic I know but I don't even know what their strategy is to keep this daw around

If you go back and read Meng's (BandLab CEO) posts in the old forum, he wanted to give the BandLab web community a full desktop DAW to "graduate" to. That is why he was happy to buy the Cakewalk IP off of Gibson's hands, and he committed to this community that the Cakewalk DAW would always be free.

He is a musician himself, and heads up a large Asian music conglomerate that includes BandLab, Cakewalk by BandLab, Guitar.com, Harmony Company, Heritage Guitars, lab.fm, MONO, MusicTech, NME, Swee Lee, Teisco, The Guitar Magazine, Uncut. So CbB is sort of a sideline that he invested in for his other 50 million users... :)

BandLab Technologies is now Caldecott Music Group. https://caldecottmusic.com/

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BandLab_Technologies

Business model: "BandLab Technologies doesn't charge for its software or digital musical content, but instead focuses on retail, manufacturing and media advertising sales."

I can definitely understand wanting to find a new tool, but QUICK in that kind of situation.

Not a Sonar user at that point, but when I read the bad news I had a "great disturbance in the Force" moment of empathy with the userbase. You know how much I participate here (including upstairs), a DAW isn't just the program, it comes with a community of users, a history, a culture.

That was Ed? Beyondcakewalk.com? I just tried going there and I guess he finally let the domain registration lapse.

Yes that was Ed/Bapu. And he finally shut that domain down after Cakewalk by BandLab looked like it was going to survive, thrive, and get a shiny new forum! :)

Don't take it that way. It's just business strategy 101 talk. I like XLN. I want them to succeed.  I'm just stating some very basic things about business strategy and branding. It's part of my professional background, so I naturally think about this stuff when looking at the situation. The outlook for XLN doesn't look promising basing on the long term inactivity with regard to new releases.  AD2 came out like decade ago, right? That's an incredibly long time for one of their flagship products to go without a major update.

You are the marketing expert. My background is 30+ years in IT.

    Agree to disagree, OK? :)
