The only advantage to 500 series gear is the small form-factor.

You can put several pieces of "a-la-cart" quality gear in a small space.

Kind of like a guitarist's "pedal-board" ... but for studio gear.

Rupert Neve will tell you a 500 series unit (due to size limits - smaller PS and Transformers) is not equal to the full sized option.

Some people are unclear on the concept! 🤣

I'll never forget the first time I heard PFDSOTM on CD. The first thing I heard was a faint sound of a heartbeat, that slowly came into focus. Not the crackle and rolling sound of a needle running through grooves imprinted in vinyl, or the steady hiss of graphite against a tape head!!

I wrote a song about the debate of vinyl/CD. And as much as I loved albums, give me CD any day.

I used to have some really nice speakers (for the day - the usual one cabinet with subwoofer, midrange and tweeter).  I did a neat trick with them instead of the usual method of putting them on the ground with the subwoofer at the bottom.  I hung them on the walls upside down which gave the music a lot more definition.  When the first CD's came out I immediately bought a player and a few selections.  The very first one was such a drastic improvement that my 2,000+ albums were put up for sale the next week!

I just read a very article saying that songs are getting shorter and now average well under 3:00.  The reason they offered for this is that streaming sites (Spotify in particular) pay by the NUMBER of songs an artist has played and not the LENGTH of time an artist is played.  The logic that follows is that shorter songs mean more plays means more income.  I don't know if he's right, but it was an interesting idea.

I think it would definitely be more fair to pay based on airtime than by the song however, to prevent every song from going on forever, maybe something like a flat amount per song than something based on time up to a cutoff like six minutes.

Oooo!  I liked this!  Other than a Nine Inch Nails concert you're unlikely to see that many guitars on stage at once!  LOL.

I'm definitely going to have to listen again while wearing headphones.  :)

Talk about a wall of sound - heh...  I like how the two guitarists in front pull out E-Bows towards the end.

  5. I still prefer to buy a whole album, but it definitely makes a difference if they intended to put it out as an album (and not just a collection of songs).  That Mystery album I linked to (in the Yes/Rush thread) is a perfect example.  The entire album fits together and features both topical as well as musical themes throughout the whole album.

I think the main issue stems from the fact that people no longer have any attention span (hence the simplistic, repetitive nature for most of today's noise, er, music!).  Good luck for them enjoying Classical music!

  6. As James already knows from Beyond My DAW, you guys ought to check out the Mystery.  The best prog band from Canada you've never heard of!  (They formed in 1986!) The guitarist/founder was definitely a fan or Rush.  I can't stop listening to their entire discography...

Here's just one of their albums that's a personal favorite plucked from the middle of their collection:

Say don't feel too bad about that one my friend . All the apartments in the Ghetto of The Bronx where I'm from didn't have basements either .

PS ,  After 25 years of therapy I have found the root of all my emotional problems .

The freaky thing is it was right there staring me in the face the whole time .

I had found an old photo album of when I was a baby and I saw the evidence with my own two eyes . My mama couldn't afford a proper Teddy Bear for me when I was a baby so she had gotten me a fluffy  skunk called Pepe Le Pew instead of a Teddy Bear ....It hurts Man It HURTS ....my first nick name was Stinky and this whole experience seems to have scarred  me for Life ....thankfully I found The Guitar and it has been all downhill ever since .

And now you live in Vantucky!  It's a logical progression!  🤣

My Mom's at that age (will be 90 in May) where she's reliving old memories (what I get for having her take supplements that help remove brain fog!  LOL).  She was just relating to me yesterday how I would stand at the edge of my playpen and sing like crazy.  Apparently the Double-Mint Chewing Gum commercial was a favorite...  Then, when my voice changed as I got older, it put me right in the middle of octaves and the singing stopped, but I would doodle on a piano at every given chance.  I just wish they could have afforded to give me lessons (on anything musical!) - actually, it was the instrument itself they couldn't afford since I was already costing them an arm and a leg with my sporting endeavors.  I didn't discover guitar until late at a friend's house in Junior High.

  8. I didn't reply because I just thought you were trolling.  If you play guitar, then you should be able to tell that JF's playing was no where's near average by any comparison.  I have no credentials like Kenny, but I did play in a band with Craig Goldy (Ronnie James Dio's godchild who played with Guifria and Dio), and I used to hang out with Walter Trout and Eddie Van Halen down in So. Cal.  I can tell the difference between average and above.  Most guitarists would give their left nut to play as well as JF did in those videos.

But (I guess), that's just my opinion.
