  3. Evolution Rick is actually played fingerstyle only, and not picked. It uses the precursor to the Evolution engine, so there are some familiar elements such as the built-in effects, articulation mapping system, and various settings to adjust the sound and playability of the instrument to your liking. However, it doesn't license the free Kontakt Player, so you would need to own the full version of Kontakt to use it. It also isn't NKS Ready, and uses its own built-in preset system instead of Kontakt's snapshot presets. At some point we'll update the library to add all that, but if you specifically need a picked bass sound or something that runs in the free Kontakt Player, check out our Evolution Flatwound Bass and Evolution Roundwound Bass libraries. Both include fingerstyle and picked articulations as well as slapping, so they're pretty extensive. Here's a comparison of the two libraries:

  9. This discussion makes me feel like such a dinosaur. If I want something repeated 16 times, I physically play it 16 times using my own actual fingers. Sure, each repetition might not be identical, but I see that as a positive. That said, on the rare occasions when I do want to exactly duplicate something, like maybe a tambourine hit, I have no problem using the exact same technique as I'd use with any other type of editor: CTL-C / CTL-V. Yeh, I have loop libraries that allow for a single MIDI note to be stretched to any length, but rarely use them because despite their undeniable convenience, in the end they're just excruciatingly booooring.

  13. Yes, the DAW has to allocate resources for many additional I/O channels, etc. But it doesn't consume the same amount of RAM as using separate/unique sample libraries. Let's say your lean OS install idles at ~3.1GB RAM Fire up Studio One Pro v5 with an empty project... and you're at 4.3GB Add a single instance of Kontakt 6 (empty - no libraries loaded)... and you're at 4.5GB Load The Grandeur into the single Kontakt 6 instance... and you're at 4.8GB Load a second instance of Kontakt 6 with an instance of The Grandeur. You've now got two instances of Kontakt 6... each with The Grandeur loaded... RAM use is now 4.9GB. If you load the same two instances of Kontakt 6... load The Grandeur in the first... and The Maverick in the second... RAM use is 5.2GB. Both piano libraries are a bit over 7GB in total size. I'll liken the situation to testing drive speed. Let's say the drive you want to benchmark has 128MB cache. What happens if you benchmark with a 32MB file? What happens if you benchmark with a 1GB file? With the 32MB file, you'll be testing the speed of the cache. ? With the 1GB file, you'll circumvent the caching... and get the actual speed of the drive. Load up 20-30 libraries that are similar in size to The Grandeur (but each a unique separate library). Report back with the RAM use and RAM Pressure graph. I pushed the 16GB M1 Mini ridiculously hard... and it did a pretty remarkable job. The RAM caching, compression, etc allow you to squeeze a lot out of 16GB RAM. That said, if you really push it... the RAM Pressure went thru the roof... and it took a LONG time for this type of project to fully load, RAM to be compressed/cached/etc. It's not ideal in a heavy load workstation type scenario... and (to me) not a real substitute for having enough physical RAM for your largest projects. To be fair, Apple doesn't market the machine for that type of use. For what it is (small form-factor, inexpensive, silent), it's a nice machine.

  14. Glad to be of help, I actually did exactly that, started off with the project and deleted track by track and bus by bus till there's one track left and i was still facing the problem. Swapped out the mono plugin in my chain and found out that was the cause

  16. I specifically mentioned this when talking about running stress-tests on a "RAM limited" machine. If you load many instances of the same library, it completely invalidates the test. Why? Because the single library is only buffered once (in RAM). RAM wise, you may as well only be running a single instance of The Grandeur. To actually stress-test the machine's limited amount of RAM, you need to load separate/different large libraries.

But I came back the other day and the first thing I did was sign up to that group buy to buy OTS lap steel ? Yeah there's no decent upright bass in Komplete

  22. My man Tezza wudup man! You still down under? That's not a knife.. Yeah, I like Eb because it's dark; darker than even drop D and so on, because it has the crispness and attack that E standard has, but it also has this beautiful dark violet sound.. it's hard for me to explain but I associate that color with it. So I tune my regular guitars, electric and acoustic to Eb and I tune my baritone strat to Bb, though I believe technically that's A#, and I tune my 5-string bass to Bb so all of my guitars are in relative tune with each other. I wouldn't go near a regular bass guitar library though, but I do need an upright bass library as I just I don't play upright bass and I don't intend to own one anytime soon. An upright bass vst, tuned to E flat and shoved through octavers and amp sims like I do everything else. I haven't tried the Kontakt Scarbee bass but I'm not surprised that it's decent cuz there's a lot of great stuff Komplete actually

  23. The flattery is most sincere. Brace yourself for more: Your themes are the most "outside the box," and inspired me to head in that direction, beyond just changing colours. Steam Punk was the one that really hipped me to the idea that there could be some whimsy and inherent fun in creating themes. What you did with the buttons in FLIGHT DECK is inspiring (the "LED indicators"). Also, of course, YLIP, without which I would never have gotten to the point where I would have created something I thought was fit for others to see. Mucho respeto.

  27. Yep, Eb is massive for me as well, my acoustic tuned to Eb is easier and awesome to play and sounds great as well. Can use slightly heavier strings, and finger squeak doesn't seem as bad for some reason, perhaps the lower tension of the strings means not so much pressure required. I tried the Ample Basses and was initially blown away, on their own, they sound great but putting them into a mix was a bit more of a challenge. I couldn't understand why they sounded so much better than my KU10 Scarbee basses. Then I realized that unlike the Scarbee basses, they come with a lot of effects already added in the presets, EQ, compression, reverb and some chorusy effects etc. When you turn all that stuff off, they sound no better or worse than the Scarbee basses, just different. I opted to just keep and use the Scarbee basses that I already had, I didn't need to buy more but the Amplesound experience taught me about the importance of effects on the bass, to really go wild with the EQ and compression etc. If you don't have any bass guitar VST's at all, then the Amplesound stuff might be a good buy but to put them in a mix, you may need to fiddle with the effects side of things or they can be a bit overpowering. Probably best to start with all that stuff off and then add as necessary. I would love a good upright though, I don't have a really decent one of those.

  29. I've seen issues long past where you might delete a synth and not delete it's associated audio tracks - then when re-inserting the same synth the tracks associations could get confused. I've seen issues - ( again in the past ) where deleting a synth could re-assign the deleted instrument audio tracks to a different synth . I haven't run into this in along while - so maybe one of the updates has made this more stable - or more likely I was just being stupid about something.

  34. Yeah I had considered Bass Pair before but Bitflipper told me something about it that totally turned me off to it.. don't remember what he said exactly but I think it was also said by him or someone else that Ample Sound Upright is the one to go for if you don't already have something like Trillian. I wanted to be able to to tune the upright flat, to Eb, which Straight Ahead Bass would not let me do. Anyway.

  37. The libraries are very versatile. For example I picked up Evolution Texas Twang last group buy and thought I'd rarely, if ever, use it - but I've used it several times recently and it may end up being my togo OTS lib. With the built in amp sim (sorry I'm not more descript but I'm out of town away from my DAW) it definitely works for R&R / progressive rock and sits great in a mix.

  40. Hey all, Several months back I set up a YouTube channel that shows how I make my music via Cakewalk. In addition to examples of my own work, I have several quick and easy tutorials showing the fundamentals of my process which involves VSTi’s and Cakewalk’s MIDI editor, the Piano Roll View (PRV). I also have some videos explaining tips and tricks I use within Cakewalk, one of which is something I call “Off The Grid” composition (OTG). For context, I’ve been using Cakewalk as my primary DAW for many years. However, rather than recording me playing live instruments, I use a variety of virtual instruments as my sound sources and I essentially draw every note manually with the PC keyboard and mouse (no physical MIDI controllers). This removes the limitation of playing skill and allows me to approximate the music in my head far more easily and effectively. You can check out my tutorial videos on drawing music in Cakewalk here: I tried my best to make the tutorials as minimal and succinct as I could so it both isn’t overwhelming and is easy to understand. I hope you find this useful.
