  2. How some companies are kinda using this calamity as a marketing opportunity? It's a very thin line. I mean... you want to give something to people--then really give them something. Lose some money to help musicians. Maybe a credit like IK so they can buy something they actually want. Not something they don't want or already have. But a temporary demo? I don't know. You should ALWAYS make that available. Probably the best response I've seen so far was Fluffy Audio, where they totally gave us that piano. free. They didn't take a cent for it. They just used that gift to appeal to our best selves and donate. I'd like to see more like that.

  3. The reason I think it's okay to post it here is because this is the place where all these offers are posted. Larry, if you want to take it down, that's fine with me. But I don't go to any of the other Cakewalk forums. You are the people I know. Maybe if you aren't living in a place like my town, New York City, and hadn't already lost two friends to it already, as I have, you might see it differently. But I know that many of you can feel what I'm saying, even if you haven't lost a friend yet. And I sure hope you don't, because it is terrible. But this page is a piece of heaven, a safe place. I love that people are coming out with new products and having sales. I love coming here. It's a distraction. It's a relief. Here I don't want to hear about the Coronavirus at all. I really don't. And I don't want to get these emails every day. That's on me. But if companies are going to bring it up, then I have my opinion and I've stated it, and I'm done. Bring on the deals! 😀 Saying safe means staying mentally safe too.

  4. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE If you go for any number of these mags, especially if you go for quiet a few. MAKE SURE AFTERWARDS you look at your subscriptions in settings and opposite each of the new mags you added, select MANAGE and turn off AUTORENEW. If you dont do that you: 1. will be charged beyond the free editions until you cancel the sub 2. will NOT be able to delete your PAYMENT METHOD So YOU HAVE to add a payment method before you can "purchase" these free subs. BUT once you turn off autorenew on those recent subs via method above, you can delete the payment method again safely knowing you will not be charged in the future. Quiet an unfair stunt pulled by ZINIO I think

  5. Full disclosure: I work in advertising, so I'm getting an inside view of how the current pandemic situation is affecting various sectors and industries. It's a genuinely terrifying time, and a lot of money is going to be lost -- which doesn't just affect the corporate bottom line, but also the lives of the employees who depend on those industries for their income. In the case of the marketing opportunities that crop up in a time of crises, it's a very difficult set of decisions that the business world in general will have to confront, and some really choppy waters to navigate: they are watching their markets collapse (or drastically change as people transition to working from home and alter their shopping and buying patterns); they are watching their earning projections and marketing plans become basically meaningless overnight, and with so much chaos they have no real idea what tomorrow or next week will hold; and they are trying very hard to minimize the impact this will have on their employees and customers. And so they are trying to find what positive side they can to this crises. I personally have no problem if a company tries to flow with the times and get through this with minimal damage, as long as what they do isn't exploitative. And by exploitative, I mean things like price gouging, tasteless advertising that makes light of the crises, product or service offerings that have too many strings attached or are offered as a generous bonus for the times but in reality are merely old deals in new clothing, etc. Folks like Fluffy Audio giving away things for free and/or redirecting money to a worthy cause is great, and they set a wonderful example and deserve credit for it. But Folks like Steinberg offering fully functional versions of their products for two months free, with no strings attached, doesn't bother me either. I believe their normal demo time is 30 days? They don't have to do anything at all, and if they can give folks something to use for a little while and NOT lose money in the process, I have no issue with that. Part of their reasoning, I'm sure, is they want to give folks exposure to their products -- you use Dorico Elements for two months, and love it so much you decide to pay for it. Good for you, great for them. That doesn't bother me, either. They are not forcing anyone to do anything, and selling their products is their business and the only reason they exist, and in the end everybody gets something. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, as long as they are not exploiting anyone or anything to achieve it.

  6. I agree also, but I can also see their side...they are losing money too...losing lots of sales. While an act of kindness will always be well received, some just aren't able...and I understand that also. You don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater!

  9. Does it make you uncomfortable how people are "using this calamity" to expect freebies? Jokes aside, altruism should be an individual choice. To me, demanding altruism from someone else doesn't sound right. Just take the freebies that you like and thank the giver for it (and cclarry et al. for spreading the word), then tune out those you don't care for. Even if it doesn't have value for you, don't underestimate the value of an extended demo for others. For some people unable to go to their workplace, having easier options to set up temporary replacement systems at home can bring plenty of value. (and if anybody is curious - no, I don't work for a music software company, this post is not a defense of my employer)

  11. I've always thought that Shortnoise was one of the most impressive freebies I've ever downloaded and never used. It's still available for free HERE The normal price is $199 The normal price for Shortnoise 2 (which includes 1) is $99 Now, if I decided to pay ten bucks for Shortnoise 2, maybe I'd value it more and actually use it. But I have toooo much stuff already.

  12. Early on they were show stoppers. So much so I pretty much only ran the beta builds, which he released relentlessly. I seem to remember days where he would actually ship multiple updates on the same day. It's not quite like that any more. In fact I don't think I'm on a beta build right now. Most of the bugs these days are just annoyances. There is a lot of logic behind how music works and it's easy for things to not work right. If you read the KvR bug thread https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=168&t=450065 You can see some of the history of issues that have come up. I don't think bugs should be the major issue with deciding if you and Rapid Composer are compatible. It also sounds like he's going to take the melody generator and make stand alone plugins out of it (I hope he does more than just it). Which I think is a great idea. I do recommend getting the full version, the extra tools are really the heart of Rapid Composer. The generators it has are crazy complicated but also generate some of the most usable MIDI. Need a strum, its got it. Want an ostinato, there is a generator for that too. Fingerpicking, check. Bass generator, check. And it follows your chord progression and all the crazy music theory math you can imagine. And then on top of what it generates you can toss in a bunch of phrase variation tools, to humanize things, change chords/ velocity/etc. Here's the generators it has (every one of these has zillions of options): Then here is the list of phrase variations you can stack and use with those generators (think of them as extra MIDI plugins): But with this near infinite amount of power comes a pretty near infinite amount of complexity. If you can get your head around it though, I think it's amazing. I'm fully prepared to pay full price to get the next upgrade, I think it's that good and worth supporting. But it's not for everyone. I'm a big believer in anyone can be a "professional" and should/can use professional tools if/when they want to. But Rapid Composer is one of those tools that learning to use it and getting something out of it is a lot harder than most music software products -- sometimes the pro tools aren't a good match for the normal user. Rapid Composer is one of those apps that while it's crazy complex, it's not because of bad design or because of poor planning (in general). It's very precise about how it works. It has it's own logic and workflow. Taking a pass on it isn't unreasonable though.

  23. Pretty much any subscription company does this whether it's cable companies giving people their first month free to try out or magazines. It's so you can continue your subscriptions without interruption (and because they hope you will forget). This is nothing new and they've been doing it this way for 30-some years. When they have freebies, I sub to them and then turn the subscription off right after I'm done. I get my 3 as they come out still so no worries.

  24. Agree completely. I think it's a perfectly arguable point, with a fair amount of grey area...and there are jerks out there who will exploit this crises for gain.

  25. I get why they are doing the temporary demos. A lot of companies are trying to give people something to do while everyone is on lockdown and hopefully eventually make customers out of them so it's part out of kindness and part advertising. I'm not too bothered by all the sales. They need to get them in while they can because a lot of people won't have the money for when typical spring and summer sales will happen this year, either.

  35. Just removing the Automation Lane doesn't remove the Envelopes. Try this to remove the envelopes. To Delete ALL the envelopes or envelopes in individual Automation Lanes: To delete several or all envelopes 1. Select the data that contains the envelopes you want to delete—you can select parts of tracks, one or more whole tracks, or all tracks. Use the Edit > Delete Special command to open the Delete dialog box. 2. Select only Track/Bus Automation if it’s listed. 3. Click OK. Cakewalk deletes any track and clip envelopes that are in the data you selected. If you to keep some automation but delete others, open the Automation Lanes and select just the lanes that contain the envelopes you want to remove. To select a lane click the top left corner above the - sign. Press and hold the Ctrl key to select multiple lanes. Then use Edit/Delete Special to delete the unwanted envelopes, which will also remove those Automation Lanes.

  39. I have all of these (Orb Composer/Sundog/ChordPotion/Rapid Composer) you name it, I've bought it. I've spent a lot of time with Rapid Composer. The developer is very responsive and has taken and fixed bug reports pretty much non-stop. The problem of course is that it has had bugs, pretty much non-stop. That said in the last few years it has really grown a lot. While it does have some of the best generators out there, it also is one of the few apps in this class that I don't feel like I'm just driving a random number generator. You really can compose with it and it really can help you do that. But the learning curve is pretty much a brick wall. From the very odd/unique UI that wraps the whole app to some of its crazy ways of working with things -- it's very hard to get to grips with. I figure I maybe understand about 20% of it. Huge sections of it I still have no idea how to use. And I first bought it in Dec 2014. There is a lot more learning material available now which can really help, but even still I think most users are going to find it's almost impossible to get a handle on. My only advice is to try the demo and watch some of the videos. Also download all the user generated phrases/content you can find on KvR. While I think it might offer some big productivity wins if you go all in and use it to make an entire work, I'm still at the using it to generate short (less than 24 measures) bits which I almost always take out of it and put into a more productive DAW. I know I'd get big wins if I did the whole work inside it, but I just can't quite do that full level of project management with it (part of the huge sections I have no idea how to use). I think I have the most fun with it when I just use it as a phrase/chord/melody generator. It might sound like I'm not recommending it, but that's not really the whole truth. I do recommend it very highly but not for everyone. For me it has helped me start thinking about music and music theory in ways I don't think I would have without it.

  41. On another forum (The Steel Guitar Forum) one of the members was trying to import a song directly from a standard audio CD (CDA) using Studio One 4.6 Pro and was unable to do it. He said he had done it before but as it turned out, previously he imported direct from CD but it was mp3's,which worked OK. +1 for Cakewalk, it has the "Import Audio CD" function that will import (rip) the CDA track(s) from the CD to Cakewalk.

  42. Quick turnaround on this project! Obviously you can't take the "ten years" workflow approach . . . Lyrics are smart and great. The chorus, the third line where you take it down and it do the C to G thing, that's a clever bit of chording right there. It makes the song memorable! I heard a bit of sibilance in the prechoruses, particularly the first one. Other than that the mix is a clean and clear as a clean and clear bell. Really great. I hope they get together soon! Have they heard this yet? What do they think? cheers, -Tom
