Alan
I found an old cassette tape of original material I recorded in a studio with my friend about 30 years ago. I want to transfer the music to my DAW in the best quality I can manage. I have an old, but at the time, quality cassette deck. I was going to run RCA cables from my cassette deck to my VS 100 interface and see if that works. Any suggestions? I was going to try to use ozone 7 to see if I can clean up the sound if the transfer works. This has a great deal of meaning to me as these were the first recordings my friend and I ever created and I want to be able to send the songs to him in a modern format. Thanks for any help. Scott R. Garrigus
That should work fine as long as you're connecting from line outputs on the deck to line inputs on the VS100. Also, Ozone is mainly for mastering. iZotope RX is their software for audio noise removal. -- Scott R. Alan Tubbs
That should work fine ... the vs 100 has rca ins? I can’t remember.. but should be no problem. You don’t need to overcapture the cassette audio. The vs has a lot more dB range so you don’t need to hit the red with the old songs and you don’t need any extra noise.
Alan
Thanks the project worked out great. Better sound than I expected from a 35 year old cassette recorded by two 18 year olds. We had a lot of laughs listening to what we wrote at that time.
Alan
Thanks everyone, For those interested in the cassette tape transfer to the DAW, here it is. Recorded in 1982 and transferred onto a DAW 37 years later after the tape was in a bag in my basement. Thanks for all your suggestions and help. RBH
I'm curious if you remember using any particular guitar pedals - and what they'd be, I swear I hear some familiar distortion tones in there. Home recording in the early 80's was some of the best of times.
Starship Krupa
@Alan, I see no link to the project, and I'm curious about it. And yes, gotta post a gear list, as much as you can recall.
Alan
I put the songs on SoundCloud. I remember using a Roland JC 120 amp, and a Roland Space Echo. Any memories after that are quite vague.
chuckebaby
Love the sound of wow and flutter. Analog is the one thing I've yet to hear reproduced in a plug in, so many have tried but it still sounds like digital trying to be analog. Song sounds great. A little rough around the edges but I would take that any day over a perfectly recorded digital track. I still run analog tape in my studio. problem is, there has to be a digital conversion somewhere and its always evident.

Starship Krupa
Nice work, Alan! Sounds like we might have been listening to some of the same stuff back then. I'm getting whiffs of Eno, Talking Heads, Bowie, Fripp, Belew, Nelson?
