You'll need to spend time going through tutorials or working through one of the several books out there to really take advantage of it. It's essentially a visual programming language so you can get it to do about anything you can imagine with audio or midi. Be prepared to use it standalone mode only unless you have Ableton Suite (or Ableton with the Max add on). There is an additional paid RNBO add-on which allows you to export in various formats, but it is limited to a subset of the available modules. The Cycling 74 store has sales once or twice a year for around 25-30% off. I love the software, but it's definitely something you'll wnat to dedicate some time to take full advantage of it. If you've done any type of programming in the past, then that would make the transition easier.

Just looking at it to see if its something I may want to start to get into on the side. (Not that i have that much free time on my hands.) I found some courses and also the the books reference on it. https://www.kadenze.com/courses/max-msp-programming-course-structuring-interactive-software-for-digital-arts/info https://cycling74.com/books
e-cue
My crossgrade from 8 on their site is $199. Add RNBO + $299 on top. I used this for a proof of concept project. If you aren't very familiar with Ableton, or aren't really quick at picking things up, I'd steer clear. It can do a ton of stuff- some things you haven't imagined yet. But I consider the learning curve to be a bit high, as much as they've done a good job of making as simple as possible.

I have dudes that have never programmed who are now using chatgpt to make php and asp code and dump it into live production repo every day. which then needs to get debugged. I figure I should be able to do same with Max. Plus i do know how to code in other langs. :0) Edited Wednesday at 02:56 PM by Nitrate Audio
SmokeyJ628
If you want a free way to do much if what Max can do, then download Pure Data. It was created by the same guy that created Max, but it's free. https://puredata.info/ The programming is very similar so learning Pure Data will prime you for learning Max. There is a version of it called Plug Data that can be used as a plugin. https://plugdata.org/ Max has more features and a much better look than the Pure Data variants. However if you want to dip your toes in the water, Pure Data is a no cost way to do it. 1
audioschmaudio Posted yesterday at 07:54 AM Share Posted yesterday at 07:54 AM I know we're not supposed to talk about other DAWs here, but it's important to know that if you own Max for Live, Live users can upgrade to the full Max version for 199€.
