Pathfinder Posted July 7 Posted July 7 I tried the mackie big knob but the noise was too much. Any ideas? Thanks folks
OutrageProductions Posted July 7 Posted July 7 (edited) I use a Grace Designs m908 and it is absolutely transparent and ultra quiet. Probably not in your budget tho... $7k. Edited July 7 by OutrageProductions 1
Mr No Name Posted July 7 Posted July 7 "Many people believe that passive controllers are inherently better than active ones simply because there are no electronics in the signal path to add noise or distortion, but the reality is more nuanced. Provided the connecting cables are kept reasonably short (a couple of metres or less), they usually work perfectly well, so at the budget end of the market, they can offer good value." try shorter , shielded cables. https://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advice/monitor-controllers 1 1

Alan Tubbs Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I don’t know if the tc unit is still made but a buddy used his b room tc in his main when his big console had to be sent off. He had no complaints.

In addition to this, not all consumer units have the same grade of shielding internal to the unit. Another thing to check is any wireless/electronic devices in the vicinity of the controller (even cell phones). 3 minutes ago, Mr No Name said: that is a lot of money for a volume knob 😵 Consumer grade products vary with the shielding they have internally (some shielding designs are much more expensive). As you step up into "non-consumer" products that can get intense... imagine a piece of gear the size of a package of hot dogs that costs $50K.
OutrageProductions Posted July 9 Posted July 9 30 minutes ago, Mr No Name said: that is a lot of money for a volume knob 😵 It is actually a fully balanced switching matrix capable of anything from 2.1 to 22.2.6 Atmos, so no... not really. I use it for 3 stereo pairs, 2 HP cue feeds, and a 7.1.4 playback system. I used to have a Dangerous Designs system, but outgrew it when I went from 5.1 to 7.1.4.
jesse g Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I used to use the Mackie Big Knob, but yes the noise got to me after a while also. Then I switched to the PreSonus Monitor Station 2 and wow that helped a lot. The other thing I changed was where was the electrical current was coming from. I pulled it from the wall outlet and places it into a Radial Power-2 Power Conditioner. 2
