saxon1066
Hi, everyone! Just took a recent discounted offer for Bandlab membership for the first time. I was about to download the new Sonar when something occured to me: I have been using Cakewalk by BandLab (and the Cakewalk before that) for many years and have a couple dozen projects I'm still working on. If I open and save those projects in the new Sonar, will the projects still be compatible (at least opening them) with the old Cakewalk by BandLab? Can I never go back to old Cakewalk with a project saved in Sonar? I understand that any new functions and plug-ins from Sonar would not carry over to old Cakewalk. But I wonder if it's best just to complete the old projects in Cakewalk by BandLab and then create new ones in the new Sonar.
Jeremy Oakes
If you need to open a file in CbB, in Windows Explorer right click on it and in the menu that drops choose Open With, (opt for once only as against always). yes the Cakewalk files are compatible withSonar and CbB, the caveat being if you use any new features in exclusive to Sonar, they will not be available in CbB. Your vst’s used by CbB will show up in Sonar. I’ve used Sonar for nearly a year now, and personally would never go back to CbB. If i stop my sub, i’ll still have the free tier of Sonar - the majority of things crippled in the free version i don’t use. YMMV of course. John Vere
You should take this opportunity to make a complete backup of the projects before you proceed. Put them all in a folder and name it Cakewalk projects June 2025. Best to put this in two separate locations.
Noel Borthwick
All cakewalk projects are backwards compatible down to versions of our software from 2003. Of course if you are utilizing newer features in the software those parts of the project wont be visible but the basics should still load. Re CbB its moot since there will be only a single version of Sonar maintained going forward.
