I think it is fun sometimes to record a bunch of tracks and have them super low in the mix for depth. Is it superfluous? Maybe. Is it superfluous? Maybe. But sometimes it fits. Yeah, I recently left a post about combining two diff piano vsts. The main piano vst I was using had something missing in the mids. I added im the other piano vst at very low volume and put a high & low pass on it. And I compressed it. It worked perfectly to help feel out the mids a bit. I also add other parts in my songs that are very low in volume. Although they can't be easily pointed out, they are definitely perceived and help fill out the sound.
