Midi problems but only in Cakewalk

Hi. 
I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction. Cakewalk has stopped working with MIDI. I know my interface ( Scarlett 1818 ) midi ports are working because if I load a different program, like a stand alone version of EZKeys, everything works perfectly. In Cakewalk I can see the Focusrite in midi devices and this is selected for input and omni etc. but it just will not record. I have been using MIDI for many years and not had problems before. What am I overlooking? Any suggestions please.

There could be several reasons for this problem.

Select an instrument track, open the piano roll and put in notes from C0 to C8. Any of them make a sound?

Can you please list the things you tried so far?

Input echo enabled.  MIDI channels correct?, etc

I've had similar issues with CbB not connecting to outboard MIDI gear thru a MOTU midi interface.  Occasionally CbB refuses to send or receive any data.  All settings are visually correct and VSTs work.  A system reboot (sometimes 2) is needed to get it working, so maybe it's a Windows or USB or MOTU driver issue.

I use a Roland UM-1 MKII USB to MIDI adapter to control outboard gear with CbB.  No issues there - even if sysex being sent and responded to.
