Just trying to trim the beginning of a video - can't do it!

I'm new to Cakewalk, but have managed to pretty much do want I want to with my project - the only thing is I need to trim/delete the first about 20 seconds. It really can't be that complicated, but I cant see how to do it. All the complicated stuff was pretty straightforward... but this basic task has me beaten after 2 hours!

I have video with audio in wmv format. I'm in basic view with video thumbnails showing. I can select the portion of track I need to remove on the ribbon thingy at the top, and then delete the audio. But the video remains. I've tried delete special, and different views but cant see how to do it.

Grateful for any ideas - and I have searched everywhere!

Cakewalk can't edit video. You'll have to use some kind of video editing software to do that, or use an online video editor. Video editing software can also give you a better quality finished product. Cakewalk's main video focus is to put together a soundtrack for a video. I picked up Corel VideoStudio Ultimate 2023 a few weeks ago to do some basic video editing with my nature videos and I'm pretty happy with it. Here are my suggestions. Trim your video using video editing software, use Cakewalk to put your soundtrack together using the trimmed video, then export the Cakewalk audio for use in your video editing software to make your finished product. Here is the first project I used the Corel software to make a video with.

Corel Video VideoStudio Ultimate 2023 software with Cakewalk audio.

Wow. I realise Cakewalk is primarily for audio, but I thought it would be able to do a simple trim. Well at least that explains why I cant do it!!

Thanks for the input.... I'll see if I've got something else that twill do it.

Bear in mind that Corel abandoned VideoStudio, Painter, and PaintShop Pro (there are no 2024 editions of these). Davinci Resolve is one of the most capable/comprehensive editors on the market and the Resolve free version alone will suit most users (they make most money from hardware). Simple tutorials for specific tasks are recommended to learn or get things done. If intending to work with video in the future, Resolve is a better option to learn. For the trim edit you want, even Windows Movie Maker will do that (but is limited in what it will do if you get very deep into post-production).

Also, Filmora by Wondershare, is a killer video editor and has great tools to  align\sync the audio with the video. That is the main reason I purchased it. Great app imho.

It's not free but it is inexpensive and  has tons of tutorials.

I believe their is a free 30 day trial without limitations. Used to be anyway........

Try the free program Avidemux portable ( the latest version is at the very end of the list), it has a lot of tools that you can use to do everything you mentioned - cut, join, cut unnecessary fragments, etc.. The program is very lightweight, stable, quite intuitive, and doesn't require any special effort to master, and leaves no traces in the system.

Use a Daw that can do this, I have 3. They also can separate the audio track which is handy for when a video  has  audio sync issues. In my video editor the audio and video are glued together. The right tool for the job makes for less issues.

Well thanks for all those ideas..... I'm not getting notification on posts here so only just seen all this.

Meantime I've been playing with VideoPad and looks like this will do what I need.

What I'm actually doing is using a stem splitter to put one instrument on the left channel and the rest of the stems on the right channel. Looks like I can load the original video into VideoPad, mute the original audio, then add the stems and pan them left and right, and then trim the beginning as needed.

I dont need any  Fx etc so looks like this'll fix it. I had tried using VideoPad already but free version wont save as MP4 - however it saves as wmv which will do just fine.
