Feature Request? Or am I doing something wrong? Take Lane note overlap.

Recommended Posts

Probably me... but I'm having a hard time working with Comping Take Lanes when notes overlap.

Example:
I'm trying to record a piano Intro and am comping. Since the takes are very similar, I end up with takes, when viewed in Piano Roll View (PRV), that have lots of notes "stacked" on top of each other - making editing very challenging.

I know that when you select a take lane it gets "highlighted" (white notes in my screenshot), but there are so many other notes from other take lanes that overlap.

Seems like it would be easier if there was an option to "hide" other takes, so all you see is the take you want to edit.

Am I missing something? Has this been discussed before?

Here's an example:

Obviously PRV doesn't display individual Take Lanes.  Only ways I know would be:

1. Use Track View Notes mode where Take Lanes reside and can be separated.

2.  Drag each Take Lane clip to it's own track where PRV can single them out.

or

3, Record takes into separate tracks to begin with

On another note, how cool would it be if copied & pasted notes and clips appeared in a separate Take Lane?  Would make finding and removing them so much easier.

Comping with multiple lanes really needs to be done in the Track View and, as recently discussed, is not well-suited to working with MIDI. Because MIDI is fully editable in ways that that audio is not (though Melodyne gets you pretty close), it's generally easier to make the necessary edits to one decent take (or maybe a compilation of several sequential takes) than to try to piece together a performance from many parallel takes.

Thanks @David Baay  I’ve got to do more research and have a lot to learn!!

What is “track view notes mode”?

Probably your worst option.  Another name for Inline PRV.  Click the Clips button (A) and select Notes.  Clip changes to a mini PRV, tho not the best for editing notes in.

Still, it would be nice if there was a way to "hide" the notes from the other comp takes. Maybe I'll make it a Feature Request.

I have previously requested that muting lanes would hide notes in the PRV the same as muting clips (when 'Hide Muted Clips' is enabled in the PRV  View menu). But muting clips is pretty quick and easy.

Thanks @David Baay.  Just saw that post. I'll test that, as it would likely be an acceptable workaround.

There are so many things that Cakewalk/Sonar can do that allow you to achieve what you're after. It's amazing how much there is to learn about this great DAW!

Yeah, the Inline PRV is not useful at all.

I don't know what's been done to it in the many years since the ancient version I use was made, but I do almost all my midi editing in the inline prv in track view.  :)

(mostly because I can clearly see aligntments of midi and auedio easily this way, as everyt89thing i do is a mix of both)
