Recording is Delayed Now Like An Echo

alan933

Question

I haven't done a recording in a while, now when I open up my projects I am hearing an echo with my project on the mic audio input (using focusrite scarlet 4i4 3rd gen). Its not the effects because when I turn the effect off it removes the reverb but there's still a single 1/2 delay echo. Until I deselect the "Echo Off" button. In the past I don't remember this having an echo when it was on. It would sound louder but there was no echo.
And when I recorded a new vocal on track 13 of this old project, the 13 vocal part is a 1/2 second behind the track 12 vocal like its an echo.

What's going on here?

Likely your interface has Direct Monitoring engaged so you're hearing both the direct signal and the slightly delayed input-monitored signal from CbB due to interface latency. You just need to disable one or the other. If you aren't monitoring with track FX, you might as well stick with the Direct Monitoring through the interface.

Are you using an outboard ASIO interface? These often have a physical Direct Monitor button but sometimes it can be in a mixer/console app included with the interface. If you're using onboard audio it would be in the settings if supported. If the delay is actually a full half-second, that suggests a PDC -inducing pluging might also be involved. I see in your screenshot that you have some aux tracks which may be involved.

On re-reading, I'm a little unclear what this double-negative construction is saying, but I think I was right to interpret it as "Until I disable Input Echo"...?

WHen this is on, the echo is there
When its off it is not.
When this was on in the past it used to make it louder with effects but not a delay,

This same 1/2 delay is happening on all my projects now with this on.

ok but not sure what that is or where it is at

Direct Monitoring is for hearing what is plugged into the interface's inputs through your headphones. It is independent of the software your are using to record audio. With Direct Monitoring there is no delay in the signal caused by the recording software because you are hearing the audio 'before' it is sent to the computer. Some interfaces use a knob and/or software to determine how much of the direct signal (what is plugged into the inputs) is mixed in with the audio coming from the DAW. Your interface uses only software to do this. The software is called Focusrite Control and you will have to download and install it, if you haven't done so already, to effectively use your interface's Direct Monitoring. I suggest you check out your interface's manual as well as watch YouTube videos to learn more about how Focusrite Control works because Direct Monitoring can be very useful in some situations.

You assumed that I didn't have Focusrite Control already installed but I do. I have been clicking things in that but nothing removes the delay
Also I turned the monitor knob on front all the way down

Does anyone know what that "input echo" on/off   button is i circled and what it does? and where the echo from that is coming from?

That is the Input Echo button and it allows you to hear your audio after it is processed through your DAW. It will also add a delay to your signal depending on how much latency there is. If you are hearing an echo then you may be hearing the direct audio and the processed audio at the same time. You can use Direct Monitoring or Input Echo but using both at the same time may not give you optimum results.

The Monitor button is the level control for the outputs on the back of your device, like for speakers. It will not affect anything you hear through headphones.

Even when I turn Echo off OFF and there is no delay on the mic input,   I still get a delay on my vocals that are recorded against other tracks . Like I said, I have been using this for like 7 years and have never had this happen before . I reset focusrite controller to default, same thing. This is driving me crazy

Monitor button? You mean the Echo off button?

I am getting a delay on the mic in both the headphones on the interface and the 2 line outputs of the interface

My recording is 1/2 second delayed, cannot figure this out when it always worked real time before

Sorry, I meant Monitor knob on the front of your interface. Is the delay being recorded by Cakewalk or are you only hearing it when you are recording? Can you post a screenshot of your Audio Driver Settings? Below is a screenshot of mine, and because I am using Direct Monitoring I have a large Buffer Size, which is more stable but adds substantial echo to my signal while monitoring if I use Input Echo.

Another user had a similar problem and solved it by enabling Disable Input Monitoring During Playback in the CbB (Cakewalk by Bandlab) Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording settings. To me, it seems an extreme solution because I just Mute the audio track I am recording on, but it worked for him and is worth trying to further identify the problem.

tried that setting still getting delay on recording.

It seems for some reason, after using cakewalk forever with focusrite , I am getting latency issues like crazy when recording, will try Focusrite support I guess , this is just mind boggeling.

Make sure you have 'Use ASIO Reported Latency' checked under Record Latency Adjustment in Preferences> Audio Sync and Caching.

This corrects for Input Latency automatically and should generally be enabled all the time as it is by default. usually a small Manual Offset it also needed to get sample accurate compensation, but you're not likely to hear that small error easily. Even missing the ASIO Repoted latency adjustment would cause a lot less than half-second delay which makes me think some plugin delay is involved.

EDIT: Your screenshot suggests you're using WDM driver mode or maybe even WASAPI, try switching to ASIO under Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording.

I did just realize that this started after I got a new computer to replace older one which I thought this one was faster but I have not recorded on it since I got it in November, Not sure if theres a windows setting affecting this

AHHHH thankyou that was it. Selected ASIO and good now. Which brings me back to an old question I had on here when i was replacing my computer , "is there a way to back up CbB settings and load them again after a new install" and of course the answer was no and this is why I had a problem today. ugh.

Thanks David!
