Cakewalk by Bandlab crashes when I load the TH3-64 VST3 plugin onto a track.

Testikoff

Question

TH3-64 causes Cakewalk to crash every time I load it onto a track. I get a crash report that says "TH3-64 has caused a crash". It worked perfectly for the  past 4 or 5 years. Then yesterday my I discovered my C drive was way too full so I moved a few items to an external drive. It somehow corrupted the TH3 and I can't seem to fix it. It creates a mini dump file. How can I go about repairing the damage I must have caused to the plugin so I can continue using it without crashing Cakewalk?

as a best practice - keep programs on the OS drive as many of them seem to want to be on the C:\ drive, and feel free to relocate "content" (samples, audio, etc) to another drive to save space, being cognizant of paths to the content - some programs do not like content to be anywhere except the C:\ drive even if you can use a directory junction (e.g. Waves feels like they've hard coded it, other easy peasy), and some programs need a configuration change to point to the content (e.g. Kontakt libraries etc usually just need some configuration love).

in this case - i'd sort out your content location strategy and put content there, no programs - example - the VST3 programs should be on the C:\ drive in 99% of the cases because of what i mentioned about apps. so i'd look into other sources that consume too much space which are not programs and move those.

secondly, i'd reinstall the TH3 program since something broke and trying to piecemeal it back together is a waste of time...

as a final note - too many developers like to put their stuff into the program data folder (looser permissions) or worse, the public user folder (like SampleTank), and even worse your documents folder!. so pay attention to those locations... also get into a routine of cleaning up temp files, update backups etc etc which can eat up space.

Thank you Glenn. I will take your advice and do the things you recommended.  Afterward I'll post again and let you know how it went. It's very generous of you to take the time to help me out. Thanks again. Testikoff

Another thing to consider is getting a larger capacity drive for your C drive. It's pretty easy to clone your existing system drive to a new drive and then swap it for the old one, which can then be used either as a backup or another data drive. Many companies that sell drives also include cloning software to make it simple. Just something to think about.

The C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 directory is hard-coded for use. While some of the subfolders "can" be junctioned to another drive (I have done this with iZotope, but specifically at the subfolder level), the main VST3 directory cannot. Some apps are hard-coded to seek that directory specifically without junctions in place (e.g., Melodyne), so the main directory (and any VST3s in that main directory) must be left in place. If you want to go to the hassle for working with subdirectories, it may work with the Overloud subfolder, but you probably have other options to junction things on the C drive. To "fix" your issue that you are seeing, move everything back to the proper VST3 folder location.

I use TreeSize Free to hunt down things on the C drive, and while the VST3 folder meets my "over 4GB" criteria, that one is best left alone. A new one I found after updating Windows was the the Windows Hibernation File is created and maintained even if you have it disabled (and resets on updates). Here is a post I made about that last month if interested. I work with various multimedia, and that file when I noticed it was taking up 20% of my drive.
