The name of our recording studio, 33 1/3 Street Sound, was chosen as a tribute to the long-play vinyl phonograph record, introduced by Columbia Records in 1948. This new record format turned at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute and used micro-groove technology. The new records quickly became more popular than the deeper-grooved, faster-turning 78 rpm shellac records that had been the dominant record format since the invention of the phonograph system over 70 years earlier by Thomas Edison. The 33 1/3 rpm records could hold four times the music of the 78s, and made it possible for one record to hold an entire "album" of music. (An "album" of record music up to that point was comprised of a bound book of record sleeve pages that stored multiple 78s - not unlike the pages of a photo album.)

The 33 1/3 rpm LP record revolutionized the recorded music industry. Although other recorded music formats - cassettes and 8-track tapes, compact discs, MP3s, and streaming subscription services - have, in turn, replaced vinyl records in the marketplace, new vinyl records of recent music and reissues of older music have begun to appear in music stores as audiophiles both young and old have been wanting to buy them.

Aside from the nostalgic novelty of playing music on a phonograph stereo system, many avid phonograph listeners express the resolute opinion that music played from analog records, despite the inevitable occasional pops produced by scratches and dust, sound warmer and truer to the musicians' original performance than playback from digital media (CDs, MP3s and streaming services).

This song was written and recorded as a tribute to the 33 1/3 rpm vinyl phonograph record and the sentiments of its fans. We hope you enjoy it!

Personnel:

Thanks for the history lesson! I enjoyed the song and the very cool video. Had to chuckle at what I think was a nun in the middle of the dance. Sounds and looks very good, you really captured the mood and meaning. Been a while since I heard needle sounds. Great job
