MIDI track is not receiving a signal from the Yamaha SY77 synthesiser

dogufo

Question

sorry, lately the MIDI track is not receiving a signal from the Yamaha SY77 synthesiser. Transmitting the message the volume bar doesn't move, whereas I have everything set correctly ... what could it be?

thanks for your response

There must be something you have missed.

Is the SY77 actually transmitting?  How have you confirmed this?

For the MIDI track that is set to receive the SY77 MIDI data:

· Is the correct MIDI channel set. Is the MIDI track meter moving when you press keys on the sy77

· Is input echo on?

What have you tried so far?

Install the Yamaha driver.
In preferences make sure it is checked as a midi input device.

The SY77 is a 90s synth.  It uses 5 pin din MIDI cabled.  The OP needs the driver for what ever MIDI device they are using.

The OP also said “lately”, which, I believe implies tat it as working, but now its not.

really thanks for your time and support in my issue; sorry for late reply

the SY77 must transmit something since the voice of channel 1 is received by the track when I play the mute kbd, and its volume bar is moving; it does not unfortunately with the other channels which I transmit by playing directly from the SY77. Unfortunately I looked for the MIDI track meter on cakewalk but I can't find where it is. Is the MIDI track meter in MIDI Quest? I tried in MIDI to select receive Yamaha SY77 System but it does not receive.

Using a MIDI monitor of another librarian software instead, when I play notes from the SY77 kbd, the monitor gets the signals, so I think the issue is in a missing parameter to set in Cakewalk.

With  input echo on the tracks volume still does not move.

Everything was working two weeks ago ...so I don't know what happened 😟

Something simple must be going on here.

In 30 years, I have never had issues with Cakewalk (and all its iterations) from responding to MIDI data from an external MIDI device (first a Yamaha DX7II/D and now a Edirol PRC-800)

I am thinking I am going to start needing some screenshots from you (including the MIDI track settings - via inspector or expanded vertically track)?

What happens if you insert a Simple Instrument Track of a virtual instrument? (even use a free one from CbB)

Of course, set the MIDI device that the SY77 connected to as the input device, the MIDI track’s MIDI channel  set to 1 and the input echo enabled.

Not familiar with the SY77 but check to see if it's MIDI output was reset.  Sometime they default to sending only 1 channel.  Each track must also be set to different channels.

If not already, turn on Cake's MIDI monitor and check it's lights. Preferences>Customization>Display>Show MIDI Activity on Windows Taskbar.

thanks again for support ... here some screenshots; for the first time, I inserted a virtual instrument and played if with virtual kbd but also no sound... pls if you need more let me know thanks again a lot

This is going to be a long shot here.

As a test, what happens if you remove the first entry in Preferences - MIDI - Control Surfaces? (Preferenze - MIDI - superiic ai controllo)

I don't use Control Surfaces, but I believe that the MIDI port you use for Control Surfaces cannot be the same one as you use for your MIDI tracks.

That parameters I set just today as a test indeed, but no result. So as you suggested I removed it, but still no success. So I don't know. Thanks again, I stay on disposal for any further suggestion. ☺️

Just confirming that the MIDI out from the SY77 is plugged into the MIDI C in on the MIDISPORT and that when you press keys on the SY77 you see activity on the MIDISPORT front panel MIDI in C.

In Cakewalk, create a MIDI track and open the inspector.  When you press keys on the SY77, you should see the volume meter jump and a little indicator flash with every key press.

Do you have a standalone software instrument that you can test?

When I press keys on SY77 I see NO activity on MIDISPORT front panel MIDI in C. When instead I press keys on muted kbd I see activity MIDISPORT front panel MIDI in C. Using also the software librarian  Sounddiver from its MIDI monitor when I press keys on SY77 I see NO activity on MIDISPORT front panel MIDI in C, but the monitor shows the notes that I press.

I am not sure what you mean by “muted kbd”.  Is that the Cakewalk's virtual keyboard?

You should have two MIDI cables between the MIDISPORT and the SY77 (assuming you want two way MIDI communication between the PC and the SY77)

SY77 MIDI out ---------------> MIDI in C of the MIDISPORT   (according to your screenshots).

SY77 MIDI in <----------------- MIDI out B of the MIDISPORT  (according to your screenshots).

If you want the audio from the SY77 to be routed to Cakewalk, you need an audio cable from the SY77 to an audio in port of your audio interface.

This is my set up:

PCR-800 USB ------------------------> to PC
SW1000XG MIDI in <----------------- MIDI out of a Roland UM-1 USB to MIDI interface.
Audio out of the SW1000XG to an audio in port of a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 audio interface.

really thanks again for answering me: well, the muted kbd is hardware a Farar88 the connection is right because I never changed it and I worked fine 2 weeks ago. Then something happened and I got the issue. My set up is: Fatar88 MIDI OUT  ---------------- to MIDISPORT MIDI in B; MIDI OUT SY77 ---------to MIDISPORT in C; MIDISPORT out B ------------- MIDI IN SY77

Ok.  Try this.

Plug the SY77 MIDI out to another MIDI IN port of the MIDISPORT (You will need another MIDI cable if you still want to play using using the Farar88 as well as the SY77)

In Preferences - MIDI - Devices, > inputs,  enable which ever port you plugged the SY77 MIDI out into.

Now in any MIDI track or Simple Instrument, you will be able to select from both keyboards

thanks again, ... sorry, my previous msg was wrong and I edited it regarding the settings; ... I changed the ports in MIDISPORT but no change the issue remains unfortunately; so I plugged back to MIDISPORT OUT B and INS B and C; even, when I press kbd of SY77 the port OUT A blinks instead of the port OUT B as it should, so the mystery continues 😵

This should work.

Fatar88 MIDI OUT---------------> MIDI in B of the MIDISPORT
SY77 MIDI out ---------------> MIDI in C of the MIDISPORT

Preferences - MIDI - Devices, > inputs  >  both MIDISPORT 4x4 in B and MIDISPORT 4x4 in C  need to be enabled.

If this does not work, either you have a cable issue or something is not selected in Cakewalk , either a local echo is off or you have selected the wrong input on the MIDI tracks.

oh yes, now it works Fatar88 MIDI OUT---------------> MIDI in C of the MIDISPORT
SY77 MIDI out ---------------> MIDI in B of the MIDISPORT  😂 ... thanks for helping me and sorry to give you waste your time for me ... best regards from Italy!
