Charles Puckett
I have the latest version of Sonar Platinum, which I have repeatedly uninstalled and reinstalled. A few months ago, it simply stopped working. I click the icon, or launch from Command Center. I briefly see the splash screen, then it simply goes away. No crash notice, no nothing. I rolled back to the earliest version available (Manchester), but no good. Same thing Very frustrating. So much so that I purchased Cubase Pro (which I like fine, but of course it's a completely different workflow, and that's painful). But of course I have tons of SONAR projects that I'd like to revisit and edit. I have no idea what happened. and no idea of what to do. there seems to be nothing to look at. any ideas? bitflipper
Open Task Manager and see if an instance of Sonar is running in the background. If there is, kill it. Or reboot your computer.
Charles Puckett
I have checked Task Manager and rebooted many times. I hadn't thought about Event Viewer but I checked and there's nothing there
pwallie
what specs? windows version, audio driver etc, platinum's pretty old by now
Charles Puckett
Windows 11, up to date. 32G memory Audio is Behringer UPhoria, working swell with Sibelius, Cubase and Dorico. Sonar Platinum may be old, but it's still Cakewalk's DAW, is it not? Should run on a machine that it had been running fine for a long time

msmcleod
Try holding down CTRL when clicking the Sonar shortcut. This will go through the set up of your configuration as if it was a new install.
Charles Puckett
I'll try that. But here's some new (and very confusing) info: I uninstalled Sonar. I rebooted. I started Command Center. Command Center claims Sonar is all there and ready to Launch. In Windows Apps list, Sonar is not present. That just feels like Twilight Zone nuts
Charles Puckett
Ctrl key did not affect anything. SONAR support seems to be non-existent.

ptheisen
Just in case, you may want to check this: When you installed Dorico (and Cubase), they probably also installed Steinberg's virtual ASIO driver. I eventually learned that this can cause severe problems for Cakewalk DAWs. It did for me when I installed Dorico, though my symptom was not exactly the same, CbB would be stuck in a never ending cycle of displaying a pop-up box for a split second and repeating. The pop-up box was not on the screen long enough for me to decipher what it was saying, so I used my camera to capture a video of it and stopped the video at a point where the pop-up box was visible. It vaguely referred to an ASIO driver of some sort, which jogged my memory about Steinberg products always installing such things. Sure enough, it had been installed. As soon as I uninstalled it via the Windows Control Panel Programs and Features, CbB returned to normal operation. The Steinberg products don't need the virtual driver if you already have an audio interface using ASIO, so it is not a problem to uninstall it.

Here is the legacy article for performing a clean install of Cakewalk (not sure if there is a newer one).

Just had this problem, and that was the case: Steinberg ASIO drives. I uninstalled it, and Sonar is loading again.
David Baay
This forum is for (new) Sonar (note the mixed case). For legacy SONAR (all caps), you would normally want to be posting in the Cakewalk by Bandlab forum as CbB is genetically closer to legacy SONAR than is Sonar. Yes, I know it's confusing (that's why there's no Nobel Prize for Marketing). All that said, this sticky post from this forum, regarding the Microsoft VC redistributable could well address the issue:
