FIRST is a reverb library consisting of 30 IRs and 30 presets for rematrix. In DrShelder post there are issues with them not working after they are loaded in, same for me. So there is something not working right with these at the moment.

You appear to be correct, dry signal runs through the plugin, but no reverb comes out on the wet signal?

BREVERB is an algorithm reverb while ReMatrix is a convolution plugin.  It's not a case of better but different.

it seems to be one of those new reverbs that have the impulse responses of an anechoic chamber  😂

There seems to be a licensing problem, as when I pull that library up I get a message telling me that all the impulses are unregistered.

In the other thread about FIRST, there is a recent post indicating that the original download (FIRST) has been replaced with a new one (FIRST Free) that addresses this issue. I haven't downloaded and tried it yet, but that is hopeful.

I still got the same request for a code after redownloading, but after clicking Cancel, the IRs were available!

Frankly, nowadays I pass on "free" products that require a license! Too much trouble with it (I fought with free Overloud Rematrix stuff years ago, not worth the effort!).
