Activation Required Notice

Every once in a while I get that ugly red 'activation needed' box pop up when opening Cakewalk.  I think it is in error as I seem to be up to date and already activated.  Have you had this problem, or is it a valid activation needed notice?

I had something similar recently.  So you don't have to read the full post, I posted the solution that worked for me.  (See quote below.)

I took a chance, logged out of Bandlab from within CbB, looked up the user name and password, rebooted CbB (might not have been necessary to close/reopen CbB), and logged into Bandlab starting from within CbB.  That worked for me.

Others might have different solutions; no guarantee mine will work for others.

I'm getting activation required on my off line computer about every 18 days!  I did the offline activation request and accidentally opened CbB on my online computer (instead of the new product center). I had one more day to activate my online pc.  WTF .

Thanks

Every day  after booting up windows, the 1st CbB launch  gives me the RED Popup,  I immediately  shutdown CbB and relaunch and Voilà it's activated!!  Noel Borthwick claims it not an error, but a failure to complete a browser handshake ergo a local system problem!   Well, a load of us seem to run into this and it wasn't  happening to versions prior to the final versions, So, go figure ?...

Two thoughts:

  1. Maybe create a sticky thread about activation problems? They pop up in abundance now, which leads me to...

  2. It seems that the required activation frequency was shortened a lot in the latest/final version of Cakewalk by Bandlab. :( I've never had to activate this often previously.

The only conclusion I can make of it is that the Bakers want to be able to encourage/drive/force the customers faster to the upcoming Sonar?

Yep, agree with you on all points!

  • 7 months later...

Is there any news on this topic? Why the activation error pops up more frequently than it should? I now experienced it after tackling my issue I wrote here..

.

The activation should have been for 6 month (am I right?) but now after a little over a month I got the error again.

I thought they reduced the activation window to one month from six months some time back. I assume it should do it automatically but maybe it doesn’t. One of the developers will be able to explain it. I pretty much get it whenever I fire up CbB but that’s because there is such a large gap between usage.

Ok, thanks for the reply. Would it help to downgrade to the previous version? Or is the activation function irrespective of the version? It should be active forever, like someone somewhere suggested. Or they could put some nominal fee for lifetime "activation".

Facts ,to the best of my knowledge!

You can only activate the most recent version of Cakewalk. This is what the developers have been saying. Older versions will not activate.

Cakewalk has been discontinued as of June 2023. It has been replaced by Cakewalk Sonar.

Cakewalk has a hyper active authorization system now and developers have told us “This is the price of using freeware”! If you do not like it then simply upgrade to Sonar. This is a common system for many free software applications.

You had a trouble free ride for almost 5 years. The free ride now has limitations.

It actually amazes me that Cakewalk is still available. They originally were not saying it would be available … soon… that has seemed to have been extended out of the kindness of the developers, not Bandlab.   You should be thankful not complaining.

Complaining about such a minor inconvenience as taking a few minutes to log in seems a little bit lame to me all things considered.

Everyone has lots of options. Other free Daw’s that don’t nag you as well as Sonar is now available at a pretty affordable price. Well, that’s debatable but nuff said.

Thanks for he reply. However, It's not true that only the latest version could be activated. I have the  2024.02 version and I managed to activate it. Before the upgrade the activation was done every six month. Even then I didn't update every time and was jumping over some versions.

I would not rely on that always being the case.

Eventually, only the latest version will activate.
